I think I'm set for still film camera/s, but my daughter's boyfriend wants a film movie camera and Catie asked my opinion about one for his birthday. She has a budget of about $200 and mentioned these:

1. https://tinyurl.com/ywmfenbt
2. tinyurl.com/43d7vcha

Ideas? Go to CATLabs?

Thanks.

Check out Pro8mm. They are located in Los Angeles and sell refurbished cameras as well as film, processing, etc.

yes, those are good models. and the prices are about right these days. canon and chinon made good cameras then.
but you should make sure there's a return policy. many people selling film equipment can't say with any authority that it's in good shape. thees are antiques -- the meters go off, belts [if there are any] stretch, lubrication never happens. a test roll should be shot and processed within a safe return period. film cameras are still cameras, but with motors -- there's a lot that can go wrong.
how will they watch the results? remember that a projector is necessary to watch film, and that it will affect your judgement of the camera.

Thanks, Johnsen. I've gotten good advice on cameras from this thread, and I passed on the advice, which strikes me as sound, to deal with reputable mail- or online-order stores to my daughter.

However, she decided to solve the conundrum by choosing instead to buy her boyfriend a leather jacket (or a digital device to record music directly from the instrument). But the thread (here and on iboblistland) did elicit offers for 2 very interesting, old, film cameras for her; thanks again to the offerers.
