I have waited for this day since I knew The Bike Snob was a fan. Why has he waited so long? What bike did he choose? Did he get a fancy custom? Something less fancy since he lives in NYC? How long do we have to wait?

I’m so excited for him - and sad for the rest of his bikes. He’ll never ride them again.

Custom Rivendell with disc brakes and carbon fiber fork. He also spec'd a hub gear. I know Grant said he won't build with any of those, but he used to say he'd never build without lugs. I'll wager 10 to 1 that it's either a Roadeo or an Appaloosa. Or something else.

Seriously, it will be interesting to learn what he bought and learn his reasons. OTOH, I will seriously wager 10:1 that he won't give up his favorite (per his posts) other bikes.

Patrick,

I think you missed the big "Just Kidding" picture that was right below the reference to the carbon fork & disk brakes.

Question is is he kidding about getting a Rivendell or is he kidding about it having a crabon fork & dick brakes!? My guess would be the later rather than the former.
Grant & Tan Tenovo do have some history, my major worry is that companies who give snobby long term test bikes tend to go out of business shortly there after and that does bode well for Rivendell.

Wait, I thought Bike Snob was that Eben guy. Who's Tan Tenovo? (I don't read the blog)

Tan Tenovo is a product of Weiss's (sp?) irreverent sense of humor. He got ticketed while riding a test bike, called "Renovo" IIRC, and it was tan -- was this the wooden framed bike? -- and the cop mispelled it as "Tan Tenovo" on the ticket. So of course, Weiss had to use it as his nom de plume.

Tan Tenovo is one of the names he uses for himself at times. Think it was what a cop wrote on a ticket he received as the description of the bike he was riding when ticketed.

Not sure what bike EW is getting from Rivendell, but his latest column in Outside is worth a read. I'm not a basketball fan, or a celebrity fan, but props to LeBron James. If the bike advocacy industry could get some grant funding to make a series of PSAs featuring celebrities in some kind of Got Bikes? campaign, in today's culture, that might be something that would help with increasing critical mass. (And props to Outside for giving EW a column--and EW for earning it!)

Has he been dropping hints that he got a Platypus frame?

That could be exciting and great PR for Riv (I only wish they had more bikes to sell).  Interesting that he'd picture the green 60 cm, when he'd most likely buy the 55 (he rides a 54.5 AHH, same as me).  Perhaps he got a lime/olive 55 one.    I have those same two bikes and never thought I'd be in "snobby" company.  His wife has a Clem L.

A few weeks ago, BBDD Leah, sent me a picture of a peacock with a note: "What about a Peacock theme for Roberta's Platy!!!!!!"  I think it would be divine.  For those who haven't looked at the attachment, the picture of the peacock is worth the click.

Dorothy, I absolutely think you are right. Eben has been really enamored with his family’s 2 Rivendells so far, and it would not surprise me if he was getting a Platy, and please oh PLEASE, if Roberta doesn’t do a peacock-themed build can someone do it? I had Dorothy’s same thoughts when I read that blog post. Very, very exciting.

Roberta - guess what - we will BOTH have Bike Snob bikes because he (his wife, really) has a Clem and a Platy!

Dorothy, have you heard any news of the ETA of your son’s Platypus?

Leah, I think my son's frame shipping will be at least a couple of weeks away still. Luckily I am in SoCal and I have all the parts gathered together so it won't take too long to build it up for him.
Will's email said they sold a total of 50 frames in the 50cm and 55cm sizes in the first five minutes of the sale going live.

50 in 5 minutes! As Jason Fuller mentioned on the Platypus thread, it appears that the Radavist/Crust crowd - and I would add Path Less Pedaled and Bike Snob - have pushed Riv to a new mainstream in cycling that isn't going away soon. Will mentioned in the recent newsletter/email that he's seeing Rivs and riders wearing Riv-ed bikes in Riv garb on the streets of San Francisco in greater quantities lately. I've been following this stuff from the beginning - ever since 1994! - and for most of that time any sighting of a Rivendell was A Big Deal because it just wasn't something you saw very often, even here in close-by Marin. In the last few years it's become a thing where if I'm out where all the bikes are I'm probably going to see at least one Riv. Will says they're going to increase production next year, which is a very good move. These Platys sold too fast!

A friend of mine who worked in bike shops for years confessed he'd never even heard of Rivendell until he started working for a shop where the owner was a Grant Peterson fan.

The average "biker" has no idea; when they see you with your Wald basket Zip tied to the front rack; you might as well be a Bag lady.
It's funny to me that I get these kind of looks, like I am clueless, because it's quite obviously they who are clueless.
Although this sort of smugness doesn't really suit me, because I dislike being judgmental.
it's not lost on me that some of the most enthusiastic cyclist are many times new adopters, so I try to shrug it off: they'll know soon enough and they'll be as jaded as the rest of us! LOL
