Scouting options at this point. Just curious if anyone has a very simple model in good condition for sale and, if so, what is condition and how much is it? For last-</= 5 mile transportation with modest loads. Would prefer single speed but will consider 3 speed; prefer no derailleurs.

Can you fixify Brompton drivetrains?

What do you have?

Thanks, Patrick

Patrick, there are several  Bromptons on the Seattle Craigslist.  I don't know if they are your size.

Bromptons are one size fits all.

Hi Patrick!

Not selling mine, but I highly recommend a Brompton - it's just a very practical bike to have.

"Can you fixify Brompton drivetrains?" I'm sure someone has figured out how to do so - the brompton hacks (facebook) community is full of ideas. The main issues will be the fact that the fold happens behind the bottom bracket, so there is a chain tensioner to take up slack when folded (see photo 1 & 2). The second issue is the more/less vertical dropouts (photo 3).

If you can figure out a (safe) workaround for those issues, then I guess it's possible to fixify. But yeah, maybe not worth the hassle.

Another option is an older Dahon Boardwalk, much cheaper, still fairly classy looking, and you could very easily fixify (folds in half, rather than thirds like a brompton - the fold doesn't affect the drivetrain).

Or you could go the top of the line route too:  https://bikefriday.com/product/bike-friday-all-packa

cheers,

John

The All Packa isn’t readily fix gearable. The rear end folds independently of the bottom bracket, so the chain length changes during the fold.

BF does make some models where the BB folds with the rear frame, which could be run as a fixed gear.

Thanks, all; good information. I see various used Bromptons on eBay in the 1400-1600 range. OTOH, I also see reasons for putting that $ into fixing up that Libertas (fixed with 38 mm RH tires!), since the immediate interest in a Brompton is an Amtrak trip and I learned that you can wheel full bikes onto their trains; the Libertas would be a nice riding but still somewhat disposable "nice beater." At any rate, much up in air but the Brompton aspect of question is much clarified. Thanks.

I m on my third folder a brompton
Imo there are better riding bikes in the folder world   Bike friday for example
But no better folder than a brompton

So comes down to that

And brompton is surprisingly capable

It's the ride and riding position that always catches me out. I love the Brompton's British quirkiness, the lovely arc in the frame, the endless aftermarket parts you can throw at them and that magical fold. But I can barely ride the thing..it's quite twitchy on bumps and the narrow bars you're locked into to make the fold work are deal breaker.*

*See me here in a year when I've forgotten that stuff and buy another Brom!
