I use the Mail app on my Mac to view posts from the list, and recently I’ve encountered a problem where Mail seems like it won’t delete a post (an email) once I’ve read it. I hit “delete,” but nothing happens. But, if I quit the app and then reopen it, the deletions have happened.

This doesn’t happen on my iPhone or iPad, where deletion works as it should.

Anybody else seeing this?

P.S. I’m running Mac OS 15.2 Sequoia on my Mac, and iOS 18.2 on my iPhone and iPad.

At the risk of asking an obvious question (not an Apple user), is your Mac running the latest OS version, or is it automatically configured to download and instal latest OS updates? If not that would be something to check.

OTOH , I googled your version and it is a recent release (Nov 20). Bug or feature?

As a long time Mac user, the Mac Mail has had “interesting” behaviors since at least 2008.

Questions - Is it only posts from the list?  Are they in the “Inbox”, or do they have their own mailbox?  If in the “Inbox”, do other posts from other people do the same thing?
Next time something doesn’t appear to delete, check the Trash.  Is it there? If you go back to the Inbox, is it gone now?  You shouldn’t need to quit the app.

Apple Mail is in love with Mailboxes - the Inbox, Sent, Junk, Trash all are mailboxes and different mailboxes can be set up with different characteristics.  Example: the Trash mailbox, right click, and select “Erase Deleted Items”. If the Trash deletions are more than one window long, sometimes they don’t leave the window when you do this, but if you go to any other window (Sent, Junk, Inbox) and back, they’re gone. This has occurred at least since 2008.

I’m still running Sonoma, because I always give Apple a couple of months on a new Mac OS.  But I have to change to Sequoia soon, so I’ll see if mine does this.  As Ryan says - “Bug or feature?”

I think I solved it. Seems that Mail was organizing my Inbox by “conversations,” which placed the original message and all replies in the same place. Deleting the message I was viewing (the latest in the thread) wasn’t deleting the underlying messages, so the whole “stack” remained in the Inbox.

I turned that setting off, and now messages delete properly.

Now … here’s a photo from yesterday’s ride. The clouds of the past week finally lifted, and our local mini-Golden Gate Bridge was gleaming in the sun:
