Is anyone running a 1x11 on a roadini? Thinking of building one for some centuries and/or light rando rides. Wondering if anyone has done this and has any tips.

Yes, I know, compact doubles and/or 2x is kind of standard. Let me live my life people! 😊

Thanks ahead of time —

I don’t have a Roadini but a Strong with 1x11. Rear is 11-42. I swap between a 42T for gravel and 50T for road. I did a century on it over the summer and felt just fine (minimal elevation gain at 1,800 ft). I love the no-chain-slap and the simplicity. Some may find the spacing to be too wide on the cassette but it’s never bothered me.

I've run 1x drivetrains on two Rivendells, but not a Roadini.  Both of them were a 42-tooth chainring and an 11-32 cassette.

I had that setup on my Sam Hillborne, and used that for all-purpose road riding, including a 200k and 300k brevet with San Francisco Randonneurs.  That setup employed a friction stem shifter, and a 9-speed cassette. I'm in the process of swapping that out for a 3x9 because I'm going to be using that bike for a loaded tour.

I also have a 1x10 drivetrain on my Legolas.  42-tooth ring, and a SRAM 11-32 10 speed cassette.  SRAM double-tap shifter, Force clutch rear der.  I had that bike out yesterday on a 40 mile mixed terrain ride with 4000 ft of climbing.

A 1x drivetrain can be great.

I have a Specialized Sequoia with 1x11 but my Roadini is 2x11.

My Roadini has a gear inch spread of 29.1" to 114" on 700/32 with a 46/30 & 11/28.

The Sequoia has a gear inch spread of 26.9" to 103" on 650B/47 with a 42 & 11/42.

They both use SRAM Force and feel great. I really dig the simplicity of 1x but find myself using only a small section of the cassette, which might promote accelerated wear. I never really spin out though and always can climb hills if needed. I really never use the 46/11 on my Roadini unless I'm really going downhill so I find that the spread is a little more useable on the Sequoia. with a 42t chainring. I don't mind the gaps in the cassette either, you use your legs more to power through small hills and spend less time shifting. For centuries and light rondo it would be perfect.

If you wanted to play around and can get to Walnut Creek, Harry's Roadini has SRAM Force 1x on it, although the bike is quite large (57 or 61)

I'm running 1x8 on mine... well, sort of. 46-30 double with no front derailleur and an 12-28 cassette. Works fine, no complaints here in flat Louisiana and in not-so-flat St. Francisville. I would say that Roadinis make uniquely good candidates for 1x because their long chainstays decrease your chain angle at either end of the cassette. If I were using a wider range cassette with a low end up in the 40s I would likely need two chains on my 61 with 46cm chainstays, though.

I'm running 1x11 on a Kona Rove, with a 42 up front and a 11-50 in the back.  SRAM Rival brifter and rear mech.  It's very close to the same gear inch spread as a 44/24 with a 11-32.  The clutch on the rear mech is great for dirt roads.

There's some shots of it here:  https://www.instagram.com/p/B5lh9LtF5qA/

Absolutely no reason it wouldn't work on a roadini.  We've set up Sams and Chev's with 1x drivetrains, always works fine.

I run mine 1x11 with a 44 chainring up front and 46t cassette in the rear. Works great!
