I just got a very good deal on an unused, recent-vintage Sackville Saddlesack Medium, and I'm quite happy with it, but having owned and extensively used one some 6-7 years ago before I shortsightedly sold it, I compared the new one as observed with the old one as in memory, but with pretty distinct memories, and I have to ask if the later ones were as good as the originals? From what I recall, the leather straps are very certainly not as good as before, and the material, while nice, is thinner. Again, observing the late one, distinct memories of the original one.

Again, I'm not complaining because the price was very right (and the seller was very prompt; many thanks). But I'd have to judge that the quality of canvas and leather is less now than before.

Do others see this?

Thinking more clearly, I have to say that my perception is right. Much more recently, about 2 years ago, I owned and used well a second hand, first-gen Large Saddlesack, and yes, I recall the the canvas being thicker and the straps being more supple; no "rough graininess" on the straps that cinch flap to bottom buckles.

FWIW, I've used all varieties of Carridice Nelsons, Campers, and Juniors, and I've used Adam and Hoos Baggins, not to mention other makers' bags, so I have a fair overview of leather and canvas types for saddlebags.

The material sourcing probably changed, almost inevitable over time these days. Also, there are significant variations in the canvas "feel" based on color. This was noted some time ago either on the blagh or in the descriptions. The blue was stiffest, the gray (not the light grid gray) was floppiest. Brown and olive at the time were in the middle somewhere. No idea where it all stands now. I imagine the leather will get more supple with use, and it will all be fine.

True about sourcing, and the leather and canvas are fine, if not as good as before. At any rate, once again, I am happy. I ought never to have sold my first one. I will keep this one!
