The attached photo is my system for storing nuts and bolts. I hate it.

Are there any OCD group members who have a nice, neat, Marie-Kondo like system of storing your nuts and bolts?

If you could provide a photo, I'd love to emulate you.

I picked a bunch of these up at The Container Store a while back. They have customizable cubbies, they latch shut, and you can stack them.

I'm a wee bit more organized than you, since I have separate drawers for bolts, nuts, washers, fender bits, rack bits, chain bits, axle bits, shifter bits, brake bits, and so forth, but items of each category are just stuffed in the same drawers, which is a small problem with the bolts, as the drawer probably contains 5 lb of various sizes. Would love to have something like an old library card catalogue chest with drawers that I could make dividers for, and subdivide parts down to the nth-iest degree of scrupulously obsessive separation.

I'm by no means OCD but I do keep my stuff fairly organized. The labels aren't something I'd do myself, but one day my kid needed something to do and was using the label maker to write notes all over the house, so I figured why not harness that into something that could benefit me as well? It was one way of getting my daughter to hang out in the basement with me. For nuts/bolts/washers, I have three drawers, one for 6mm "stuff", one for 5mm, and one for 4mm.  All other bolts/washers/nuts that don't fall into those sizes is in random tupperware containers like you, Jim.

The labeling makes it! I would even add color coding via color tape stips to further define categories.

I didn't know what a Marie Kondo was, but I'm glad I found out. I used to be very organized much like the LBS. Then I got old and had other things to do, like being outdoors most of the time. Thanks to C-19, I have a lot of time to get organized, though it is a beautiful spring in Roswell GA and everyone with a bike is out riding (for the first time in history). Fortunately we have many bike lanes and bike paths. And that my friends, is a joyful site to see!

Cheers,

Hoarding is a form of OCD. https://www.instagram.com/p/B_JUjeRFgd7/

I have an old three drawer wooden chest for false teeth, with m5s up front and broken shifter parts in back.

Philip wins for container character. Hope he has a wind-up pair in there.

This is not anything I ever aspired to, but my wife got them at estate sales. Sagging thin gauge metal and with all the drawers--a sure sign of someone that either was really into it or never used them. If you're lucky, they come with interesting stuff.

After sorting out my tubs of screws and junk, it has been useful, especially when it's clear that there are no more allen screws of a particular size or length--you can actually see and buy some ahead of time. Depending on how odd the junk in the drawer is, a label might actually obscure vital visual cues--oh yeah, that junk. This is only as useful as your commitment to maintaining the order. If you share your space/stuff with dedicated agents of entropy (or if you are one yourself), it takes only a short while before chaos returns. Chaos in little drawers is not an improvement.

Sorted only to the level of genus, but works well for me. And, I like jars.

Love the word 'knarp'. Is that in the same class as widget and thingamajig?

Anton, should I be shocked that your daughter could correctly identify all the small little parts and fasteners? I mean, some of the parts are quite esoteric!

Ha, I'd be super impressed if she knew 1/10th of those things. She'd ask me to what they were, how to spell (if needed), etc, then she'd type them out, print them, and apply. She didn't ask me how to spell "hardwear".

Knarp is a specific item whereas widget and thingamajig are generic terms, no?
