Hello all,

Before I turn to fleabay, I wanted to ask if any members have a rear dynamo light they are not using. I would be happy to purchase.

Additionally, I also welcome recommendations! I currently have a shutter precision with a Busch and Muller IQ-X on a trek multitrack. The pair works splendidly. I would recommend the iq-x to anyone looking for a front light. I have also heard good things about the iq-x’s cheaper sibling, the iq-xs. Many riders I know use them here in Richmond. Not as much lux as the iq-x but gets the job done for simple commuting.

Happy Monday!

Hi,
I don't have any lights to sell, but I can recommend the Supernova lights. They stay on for a few minutes after stopping and I've been using them for around 2 years now and so far so good.

I've been using a Busch & Muller Toplight rear dyno light for years, super reliable, just works. Stays on a few minutes when stopped.Highly recommended.

I've been happy with the B&M Secula fender-mounted tailight. This works better for me because I can add/remove a fender without impacting the taillight install. Some people take fenders on and off, but not me.  So keep that in mind if you choose a fender or rack-mounted light. I ride with traffic quite a bit so I want good side visibility which the fender mount accomplishes more so than a seatstay mount.

This little one Riv sells is my new favorite
https://www.rivbike.com/products/toplight-line-small-1
It looks like a white light from the picture of it off, but when it’s juiced up it’s a fiery red. And bright (but not too bright), and small (but big enough with great visibility from 5 sides).
Five stars.

Just yesterday I installed that light's slightly cheaper cousin:

I cheat by buying my lighting equipment in my native Germany, where it's a commodity due to the strict rules about cycling...everybody's got lights, so the market is huge and the prices fairly low. This light stays on -- though maybe that's my front light providing the juice I'll have to play with that -- for several minutes, longer than any stoplight phase.

And it is amazingly bright without being obnoxious.
This is the "stand light"  function, it's much brighter when riding, of course.

It’s the very same light, only from the source. Whether through Rivendell or straight from Germany, a great light. If you get a light or two from Germany, stock up on some Schwalbes as well…
..just don’t forget about Walnut Creek

One downside to the Small is that it does not have a reflector. And does it have a standlight? I think that it does not*; it has been a while since I used one. At any rate, I replaced mine with the Platonic archetype of all earthly dynamo rear lights, the B&M Toplight Line Plus that has both standlight and reflector.

I still have my Small with added bracket and reflector as provided by Peter White. If anyone wants it, it is yours for free, shipping included, though you may have to be very patient. Also, while I think there is plenty of wire left to splice it into your own system, I did cut the wires when I removed it for the Line Plus.

* About the Small and standlight: I see to recall that mine did not remain lit when I came to a stop, this despite my early-edition K-Lite having a 2 hour standlight (dim after 10 minutes, but man, long, with separate capacitor the size of a package of playing cards). BUT! When I replaced the Small with the Line Plus upon replacing the dead K-Light with an IQ XL, I found that the Small’s standlight didn’t work if you had the power and ground wires improperly plugged in — not a problem with an Edeluxe 1 or other dynolights I’ve used, IIRC. Upshot: Perhaps the Small does have a standlight, only your have to make sure your wires are in the right place.

Hi Patrick,

The Small does have a standlight option -- I mentioned in my [Jan 14, 2026, 7:42:41] email that I didn't know whether the juice came from the front light.
I just tested that by disconnecting one wire, and rear light stayed brightly lit. It's got its own capacitor.

There are two version of this, one with clear plastic and one with red, but I suspsect the guts are the same.

Thanks.

Then, assuming that my memory is correct that mine did not remain lit when stopped, the reason must have been reversing the power and ground wires. If that would have fixed the problem, I could have saved myself the cost and hassle of replacing the Small with the Plus. But I didn’t realize this until I had the same problem with the Plus and complained onlist. Oh well, the Plus with its integrated reflector is neater than the Small with reflector added on bolt-on bracket.

BTW, the Small has been claimed.

Hi James,

I have a Toplight I'm not using I could send you for only the cost of shipping. It came off an old breezer bike that came to me without the dynamo...

standlight works for about 2 minutes after power is removed. There's a crack in the red plastic lens and other general signs of use.

Michael

Michael and all others who have replied to my thread,

Thank you kindly for the suggestions and offers. I was able to locate a Secuzed light from a generous member here. I went with that one since I currently don't have fenders for the intended frame and I was leaning towards mounting on the seatstay. I will report my experience with it after a few weeks of use!

Sounds perfect. Post a pic when you get it installed!
