Gus/Susie pre-orderers: what rims are you planning to use? Are Velocity Atlases stout enough for the intended use of this bike?

I'd recommend Cliffhangers for the extra width, but yes, absolutely, Atlas are stout enough. 2.8" is a lot of tire. I'm not sure I'd want to go narrower than the Cliffhangers, but they may well ride just fine. I know the modern stated limits can be pushed without compromizing safety (Jan at Rene Herse wrote about this somewhat recently), but I'm not sure what the real limits are. I feel solid and confident on my Cliffhangers with Schwalbe Nobby Nic 2.8" on 27.5 wheels.

With abandon,
Patrick

+1 for Cliffhangers.   I'm going with those for the Susie I'm waiting on.

I have had both Atlas and Cliffhangers on my previous Rivs.  Atlas is super solid as well. I had 2.0" tires on them.  Never had any problem even with some loaded rides.  If I already had a pair of Atlas I'd use them.  Since I'm ordering a new set, I'm going with Cliffhangers.. because why not!  The weight difference is hardly noticeable.  Cliffhangers work great for tubeless too.

I  had hoped the Riv rim once mentioned for the Hillybikes would be available before/with the frames arrival. Otherwise I'll do either a Cliffhanger or the DM24, since I do use tubes. I'm not sure what tire I'll get first, but it will be at least a 2.25-2.4, it depends on the tire really. I didn't order a Susie so much for the extra width tires, but for the quite tall head tube and it was a bright shiny Orange, like a fresh glass of liquid Sunshine poured and cured on the frame. Plus, I like the swoopy top tube appearance.

I'm sure if you asked Velocity about the Atlas on a bike that rides a 2.25-2.8" tire they'd recommend the Cliffhanger instead.

For Deacon Patrick, do you have any issues mounting and dismounting your tires(any tire you've tired) with tubes on the Cliffhangers ?

I built up a set of wheels with Atlas rims for my Hillibike family member El Clem, running 2.25" Thunder Burts and fenders. Work fine, look classy parked in front of the grocery store, handles the rough stuff. Starting from scratch for a Hilli destined for mucho dirt and trail, as others have opined, I might opt for the aforementioned Cliffhanger.

Hey Garth, mounting Maxis 2.8" and Schwalbe 2.8" has gone just fine -- only the new normal have to work the wheel well just right to get them in due to snugger tolerances from tubeless rim/tires. Yes, I'm running tubes.

I've been pretty impressed with the H Plus Son Todestreib rims (25mm internal width, 32mm external width) that I just used in a wheel build intended for use on an Appaloosa frame. The wheels were very easy to true both radially and laterally, and the spoke holes are offset about 3mm from the centreline, such that the spokes from the left flange go to the right side of the rim and vice versa, which gives a better bracing angle for the spokes on both sides of the wheel.

Not sure about the price in the US, but the local distributors here in Oz presently have them discounted for $A80 (~$US50): https://hplusson.com.au/products/todestrieb-rims.

Nick

p.s. H Plus Son claims an ERD of 592mm for the 700c Todestreib rim (without specifying where that ERD is taken to), but my measurements before building showed an ERD of 597mm to bring the end of the spokes to the bottom of the slot in a 12mm nipple, and after building the wheels, that 597 measurement proved to be absolutely correct. I've found the same discrepancies in the past with Velocity rims, so the problem isn't unique to H Plus Son. I always measure hubs and rims myself to calculate spoke lengths, rather than relying on published figures.

This has me seriously debating whether to go with Atlas or Cliffhangers on my Clem wheelset; I might end up running Rat Trap Passes on it and maybe the extra width will prevent the swirm that some have reported.  Or maybe the Atlas is wide enough to address that.  I'll probably run Gravel King SK's (2.1") but good to have the option.

Hey Jason,  another rim to consider,  that falls in between the Atlas (19.8) and Cliffhanger(25) internal widths is Sun Ryno Lyte 700c.   I believe the internal width is 22mm(27 outside).  And they can usually be found for a pair for under which a single Velocity rim would cost.    They’re not MUSA though.    They get fairly good reviews.   I’ve seen the weight listed at 590 grams for 700c as well as 670 grams for 700c so I’m not too sure on the confirmed weight.

Thanks for the info on the Todestrieb rims. That’s what I was going to build with for my Fitz, but then I bought a White/SON set with Dyads on the list here. If I do get Todestriebs, I’ll use your 597 ERD measurement.

My German-speaking friend turned me on to the Todestrieb rims - he was amused no end by the name.

Yeah, "death wish" is a strange name for a rim. There's a women's clothing boutique near where we live called "Tod", which I think is supposed to be an acronym for "things of desire", but every time I see it, I think "death".

Except if he is looking at RTPs he has a 45cm Clem with 26" wheels. The swirm is more a factor of the RTPs being a bit sensitive in terms of pressure range, not so much rim width. I've run them on narrow Mavic racing rims with no issues.

Though they do make it in 26" as well, maybe just a typo. I will probably use these for my next 26" wheel build, great value rims.

For the 26" rim size Sun also makes the Rhyno Lite XL which is about 2mm wider than the Rhyno Lite, and it's available in anodized colors of white, blue, yellow, black and red. A good place to find these kind of rims and other cool stuff is from BMX websites, where they aren't swept up in upgrade-itis.

Good idea on the Rhyno Lite / XL - I ran one of each on my trials bike back in the 90's and on a MTB or two as well!

A friend also mentioned the Velo Orange rims, which I had forgotten about - 27mm outside / 22mm inside width is a nice middle ground too, plus they come in polished for a decent price!
