Water bottle cages have fallen out of favor with me. Why? Because the 32 oz Hydroflask is where it’s at, that’s why. I tried jamming my flask in the Sackville Multisack. It didn’t fit and banged around with my iPhone, so that was a no-go. Then I tried it in the Backabike bags but it was impossible to get at without stopping and futzing. Next, I tried my medium Saddlesack (my collection of Sackville is bordering on obscene but I need them all, I just know it), but I didn’t dare chance the bottle laying flat and leaking on my iPad and leather bag. Consequently, I shoved it into the side pocket of the Saddlesack and made it as far as out of the driveway before my hot orange Hydroflask went bouncing down the road. That was the last straw; dented and chipped, I retrieved my bottle and said ENOUGH. New plan.

I knew about Randi from people on this List. She launched her new colors, all summer-themed and lovely, and I tried to choose which one would look best on the Betz. The one called “Campfire” was probably too much for my bright bike. Should probably do the more neutral and safe “Woodpecker.” But, it’s generally known that I’m the sort for whom TOO MUCH IS JUST RIGHT and I went for it. CAMPFIRE!

So, I can hardly wait to show if off here because I think this bag is genius and gorgeous and everyone might want to have one. And these are good people who love Rivendell, so why not? And you might need to know that Campfire is TOO MUCH AND JUST RIGHT, so here are the photos. Also pictured is the new saddle cover Randi sewed for me. It’s perfection in every way. Just expertly executed, but the real show-stopper is the Campfire Bag. If you get one you should delight us and post it here.

As a recent draft pick for Team Betty, I wanted to ask: Is that basket the large one RBW sells, or did you find it somewhere else? How's the handling with some decent weight up there?

I've yet to load up my Betty, but it's become my daily commuter, so it's time to get some stuff off my back and up front and center.

It is the large Wald from Rivendell! I used to load that basket exclusively because I had a kid on a trail-a-bike on back. The bike performed nobly, never wavering while carrying a heavy front load. I even used to put my dog in that basket, before his back got bad. Now I have both ends loaded - and it still handles like a dream. During the school year I haul all the boys’ computers and instruments and such in Backabike bags and this Wald. I kind of prefer a front load, honestly. Just feels bottom heavy, or like an anchor if I just carry weight in the back versus the front, you know? You need never carry a thing on your back again, Jeff. Your Betz has got this.

Enjoy and welcome to the club!

Glad you’ve got a solution you like, looks great.
I’m really happy with my VO Mojave cage. Both my 40oz hydroflask and my 32 oz klean kanteen howler work great with it.
Randi Jo is fantastic. I’ve got one of her seat covers, and she made me a custom tubes and patch kit bag that fits a Nitto spare tire cage perfectly. Good stuff.

Excellent, thanks for the intel! Looks like you snuck 42s under your fenders as well, which will be my next next experiment after Project Basket Case.

Hmm, I don’t know why they’re sideways. I can’t even POST photos 🤷‍♀️ But I love the higher quality of the photos here than in IG. No matter the quality of the photos, I’ll say it again, that bottle bag is totally fab 😍

I think but am not 100% sure you're on what Schwalbe calls a 42 in the 650B Marathons:

I have some super cheap Pari-Motos in 38 on the way to replace these infernal lead-lined Contis.

If the mean streets don't flat 'em out every other day, I'll likely spring for the spendier 42s.

Super fun bike!

The color combo looks great on your Betz and is so lively, like you! I'm glad it's everything you wanted.

One pic of your bike is not turned. Did you hold your phone differently (portrait vs landscape) when taking that pic vs the others? I've had that issue too on my phone, so I download, review, and rotate on my PC, if needed. I don't have an iPad, so don't know if it works differently on that hardware.

Oy, Jeff, I think you’re right! Well, I’m pretty sure I *used* to have 38s original to the bike from RBW HQ. I rode them for years. No flats or anything. Then one day I was sitting on the ground next to my bike and I saw this (see pic which may not show until end of this email). Think I got my use out of them or what?

I got new tires which was some huge ordeal for the shop and perhaps this is how I ended up with 42s! I tried to see from old pics what size tire I used to have but all I can make out is Continental TourRide Puncture Protection. You would think I would know more about my own bike after 7 years with it, but alas, I just ride it and switch out the bags now and then. You guys can roll your eyes. I know I am. 😂

Roberta, the funny thing is my photos act like they are right side up until after they are posted. When I view them on the List, I see they are wonky. I think you’re right about the orientation in which they were taken. Vertical must not play well with Google. Hmmm...

Thank you for the compliments - the bag makes me happy just looking at it!

That bag makes your bike so so much more fun-er! (Yes, I know not proper english, but it is the proper sentiment.)

It could be that Apple products *know* how to present pictures taken on their own hardware, but non-Apple products don't. Don't fret; I'd bet many of us here are ok to cock our heads or turn our tablets if needed to see your legendary Betz.

I am a huge Hydroflask Devotee as well, and I have found that Randi Jo’s bartender bags are the only thing that I like to put mine In. I will slip my 16oz hydroflask Into my king cages every now and then, but that has led to scratches on that water bottle.

Hydro flask or stainless steel equivalent insulated bottles for ice water are nothing short of great...that’s what I use packed with ice. If I’m not using a bar bag I have one of those large Two Fish cages with a Voile rubber strap or equivalent strap...regardless...all hail ice water on hot rides...
