I’ve been loving the 700x50 Big Bens I put on my rebuilt Atlantis a few months ago, replacing the 700x42 Panaracer Paselas I’ve ridden for decades. They feel fast and have a reputation for being pretty flat resistant. Now I’m looking for tires for my Clem, and the 700x55 Green Marathons look like a good choice for the variety of roads around here and the occasional off-road detour. Any opinions?

I bought my Sam in 2014 and put on Continental Speed Ride tires (42-622).  505g ea.
After a couple of years I thought - “Every bike I ride in Europe has Schwalbe Marathon tires, so I’ll try those”.
Put on a pair of Schwalbe Marathon Green Guard (40-622).  825g ea.
I used 55 psi in both types.

It felt like I was riding through mud.  I kept them on for a couple of months, to get a reasonable comparison.

The reason they were used when I was renting bikes to tour Europe is that they are essentially bulletproof.
But you pay for that in rolling resistance.  Or at least it seemed that way to me.  Either that or the added weight.

So I went out and bought 3 more pairs of Continental Speed Rides.  Still have a couple left.  I get about 6000 miles on a set if I rotate them yearly.
Never had a flat.  THAT probably has to do with riding a paved bike trail (not much debris).

Also interested to hearing opinions as I have a 700x35 Greenguard pair so far unused.

I have just completed a 7880km tour over the past three months on my heavily loaded touring bike. 1500km was on dirt roads, mainly the Dempster highway. The tires I used were 700x38mm Schwalbe Almotion. They roll great. The front did not flat and still looks almost like new. The rear I swapped with the new spare at 6200km as it was showing some wear and had punctured twice at around 6000km. I wanted to keep it as a usable spare, but I think it would have gone for another 1000km or so without issue.

The Almotion are folding bead, which is nice and they weigh ~650g in the 700x38 size. They don't roll silently, there is a slight road noise, but they roll easily and do not flat. Amazing tires really.

They ain't sexy but if you dial in your air pressure, the value is pretty darn good, and I've enjoyed many rides on them. Grip is great on wet roads, in my experience.

Like Ian notes, the Almotion looks interesting as well, which is what I'll be trying next since the Supremes were discontinued.

I have a pair of Marathon Almotions in 700x55 (tubeless set up mind you) and I think they roll very nicely at about 800 grams a piece. I hate flats and have frankly been pretty blessed with how few I've had in my LIFE.
Hopefully a tubeless marathon is the perfect combo for never flatting.

Ian, great intel from your tour. Sounds like a good one!

By chance did you ever ride with the Supremes? Curious how the Almotions compare? I still have one Supreme (700x35) in use, but have no more, since they've been discontinued. I've found them to be excellent tires. I know Schwalbe came out with their "Efficiency" as a replacement for the Supreme, but have heard nothing about them, except they are expensive.

Anyone have any opinions about how these different Marathons compare to Big Apples, very happy with 26 x 2.35 and 2.25 BAs.

Hello John,

I think the Almotion and Supreme are fairly comparable. I had a set of Supremes on a few years ago and the rear tire either had a manufacturing defect or I cut it in a pot hole as it split at the sidewall with not too many miles. The front I kept in service for a while longer. The Almotions I have are 700x38 vs the 700x35 Supremes I had in the past. I've also tried Schwalbe G-One in the 700x35 size. In my opinion, the Almotion are the best.

Schwalbe tires seem to just keep getting better. Their R&D costs must be eye-watering. FWIW the German sellers (Bike24, Rose, Bike Discount etc) will ship Schwalbe to North America giving access to a bit more selection and attractive pricing options. Need a studded folding 26"x4.8" tire? No problem! https://www.bike-discount.de/en/schwalbe-al-mighty-evo-26x4.80-spike-folding-tire

Thanks Ian! Good information for those of us perusing tires.

I cannot compare the a motion to The Supremes as I haven't ridden the almotion.

I bought a 2 inch x 26 inch supreme. It measures 47mm and it seems to be as good as the 26 X 1.6 No flats until over 5000 Miles of mostly city & rough blacktop ridding. They are fairly comfortable tire much more so than the Marathon & way lighter .
