I had some time today to convert my 2 speed Clem to a 3 speed. It was fine as it was, but now I've got an added big ring and a smaller granny ring. The front rings are now 40/34/21. The back is a 20t cog using the Paul Melvin Tensioner. The Melvin can handle 20 teeth worth of difference. I got the 21t ring on the front with the Mountain Tamer adapter. I really like the adapter but it does take some TLC (Dremel) to fine tune. I'm using a Shimano XT front derailleur. I haven't found a combo that thing can't handle. It's riding great!

Pre-tinkering today

Chainline looking good. Beware of adjusting spacers on the Melvin. The C Clip springs and flies about like you wouldn't believe. I lost mine in the process.

Correct. Here's the shifting situation with a Simplex friction shifter (from 70's Peugeot) mounted to the reverse stem. I just reach over the top of the bars as it's a jungle of cables underneath. Towards me is high, away is low.

I’m going to see if I can do a left right shifter switcharoo and have the shifting reverse. So toward me would be low, away high.

Jim: I entirely approve of 3-speeding a ss or a 2 speed, but curious why you (and others -- this seems to be the default Riv up-speed method) choose multiple rings and a front shiftr + chain tensioner instead of 3 cogs and a rear derailleur?

(Me, I choose a SA AM hub, perhaps in the near future also an ASC!)

I can't speak for others but mainly because of what I have available and found interesting. I like that the Paul Melvin has 20 teeth of chain wrap, so I bought it and don't regret it. When I originally was planning on this build I had 3 speeds in mind, but just now got around to installing the Mountain Tamer so I have a low gear for trails.

I hope you land an ASC though and would love to see your build!
