I’ve seen the limit listed as 47-48mm without fenders on the Riv site but I suspect some of you have pushed the limits.
How fat did you go?

Thank you
Ray

Big Ben 50’s under sidepull brakes on a Hillborne. That is absolutely the limit. But it worked and rode great.

This is on a 2TT greyish blue 62 cm frame bought in 2014.

Thanks Jimmy.
Does anyone know if clearances increased with the cantilever versions?

Ray,
I'm currently running Gravel Kings: 50 up front and 43 in back.  Room in back for a 45 but no bigger on my Waterford canti 64 double tt.

Ray, I ran the Ultradynamico Rosé on my Hillborne (one batch ago) which measure 49-50mm in reality, and there was at least 5mm per side thru the fork and lots of clearance at the back. I would feel comfortable running any tires labeled 48c, but I don't think I'd try a 2.1".  Besides, anything bigger than 48c doesn't make sense to me - you're starting to change the geometry (namely BB height) and push the bike outside the zone its meant for, and neither of these things are going to make the bike ride better.

To repeat what others have said, 48-50 really is the comfortable limit on my 18'. I'm running 43mm and the SKS fenders are TIGHT, especially on the rear. I know normally bike brands normally pad the max clearance to prevent warranty claims, but Riv hasn't on this model. It really can't go much bigger.

For anyone interested in the max size with fenders, the 44mm Rene Herse Snoqualmie Pass under Velo Orange 52mm Zeppelin fenders fit my 2018 Hillborne perfectly, but I don't think I could go any larger for either component.

Do you have the canti version? I have side pull, and I don’t think I could do fenders with Snoqualmie Pass tires. Fenders and Barlow Pass 38 is excellent though.

Yes, it's the canti version from the last run (2018/2019) before this month's release.

I have Vittoria Terreno Dry (47) on a Cliffhanger rim and I have minimal clearance in the rear at the brake bridge. Also, the Paul Mini Motos mini cable is ever so close to the tire tread. I also ran the same setup on Velocity Quills and it was a little bit better in both the brake bridge and brake cable clearance of the Mini Motos. I've also ran the GravelKing 1.9's (non-slick) on both the Cliffhangers and Quills. Again, minimal clearance, but it rolled.

I just built up a Sam with Rene Herse Oracle Ridge on Velocity Dyads. Feels fantastic, and the clearance is perfect for use w/o fenders.

Mark,

What brakes are you running on your Sam?  I was thinking about doing the Snoqualmie Pass on mine, but thought fenders would be a no-go if I wanted to use Paul Minimotos.  Based on the 52mm fender size though, I'm now wondering if it isn't actually possible.  Paul said 44mm tires are the max for the Minimotos, but I think their video also had 50 or 52 mm fenders with the brakes as well.

Thanks,
Joe

I put 50mm Gravelking SK on Atlas rims on my Sam last week. Tightest spot is the fork crown. If I pump them up past 30ish PSI, they rub. I'd say 50mm is the uncomfortable max tire size; 48 is likely the comfortable limit. I'm fine with the current setup and will keep running the Gravelkings, but anything larger isn't really an option. There's solid clearance all around on the rear, though.

I had Snoqualmie Pass tires on there (Dyad rims) underneath SKS fenders last year. It was very tight, finicky to set up, and there wasn't much clearance for anything but water to splash up in there. I went through some deep mud once and it was a hassle to remove the tires and scrape mud out just to get the bike rolling.

My Sam is a 2012 or 2014, so sidepull, but last year I had canti posts added and run Paul Motolites.

Erik,

Thanks for the input.  That's what I was worried about.  Once my build comes up in the queue at Riv, I'll ask what their suggestions are.  I'd love to run fenders, but I just don't do that much riding in the rain.  At best, it's only occasional.  My other thought was to get some of the Tektro levers that are V-brake compatible and run Motolites and a bigger fender.

Thanks,
Joe

Joe – I'm using Paul Touring Cantis, haven't tried them with V brakes. Looking at Blue Lug's Hillborne gallery, they seem to have a few builds with Minimotos and 40mm+ tires and some with fenders, maybe that will give you some clues as to what is possible.

Mark, that's the ticket! Looks like I found one using 42 mm Soma Cazaderos and Sim Works by Honjo Fenders (Turtle 58 mm from the looks of it) with a Minimoto! Thank you!

Just had a pair of the V/O 52mm Zepplin fenders installed on my SimpleOne over top of 42mm Compass Hurricane Pass tires. The clearance kinda seems about the same +/– compared to my Sam thats running 43mm BG R'n R's. Clearance is pretty good, you'll def. hear and feel peddles on rougher roads. here's a link to a insta gallery of the build:

David, that build looks super fresh with the Oracle Ridge tires on there! I'll have to pick up a pair at some point and pull the fenders to give those a try.

OP, I've been running Panaracer Gravel King SK 700x43s on CR18s with VO Zeppelin Fenders (52mm wide?) on a Canti Sam and the fit is....tight.  Fenders can get clogged with debris easily and if the fenders get knocked around i'll end up getting tire rub when really cranking up climbs.  It wasn't til I went climbing through some fallen trees after a big storm that the fender started doing that....Should've taken a hint and turned around.
