I am in the hunt for a set of dual sided SPD pedals.
I'm going flat on my touring bike but there is too much total overlap on one of my bikes to do anything but a clip .
I have been riding the old  Onza elastomer SPD's.

any suggestions?

I have XTRs and XTs and even SPD (mtb-type SPD) Dura Ace, but in my experience the PD M520 is about the best value in a clipless pedal that you can find in this galaxy.

Always ask for Shimano SPD and accept no substitutes. I've used non-Shimano clones and ... nope, choose Shimano.

If you're not going to do serious single track I highly recommend the PD-ES600. https://blog.piaw.net/2022/10/review-shimano-pd-es600.html

My friends were really skeptical that it would make any difference compared to the venerable and well respected (deservedly so) M520s, but the wings and wider platform definitely make these pedals feel much better connected than the M520s, and are the first pedals I've tried that I consider a significant improvement over the M520s. My biggest issue with them is that you have to mount them with an allen wrench instead of having wrench flats. Beware though, they're singled sided (which is what makes the connection feel so nice --- the design wouldn't have worked with a double-sided pedal, I don't think)! But for paved riding they're really awesome.

Thank you for the recommendation

Jan Heine used the  a600s. The difference is the ES600 sawed off a few millimeters on the back of the pedal. That shrinks your foot platform.

do you know if there were any other "improvements "between the A600 and the Es600

Thank you for reminding me of these because I had forgotten. I'll try and find a new old stock version of the A600

only be using this on pavement, gravel & forest road.

I recommend using the A600 if you can find them, because (similar to most road pedals) they return to the upright position with the pedal perpendicular to the ground, so you can clip in without looking.  The ES600 spins 360, so the pedal can be upside down or any which way when you go to clip back in, so you might need to rotate the pedal 180 degrees into the correct position when you clip in.

With that said, I still chose the ES600 when I replaced my Look Keo pedals, so I can walk around more comfortably and can live with the extra effort when I clip in.

Don't overlook the alternate cleats that allow for easier in and out.

Features:
  • Shimano SM-SH56 SPD Multi-Release Cleats are durable and reliable 2-bolt cleats that allow you to clip out of your pedal by twisting your foot in either direction or by lifting and twisting your heel
  • Beginner Friendly: Featuring a 13-degree clip-out angle and multi-release functionality that allows you to quickly get out of your pedals when the need arises. These cleats are a great choice for anyone new to clipless pedals
  • Customizable: Engineered specifically to work with nearly all Shimano SPD pedals, which allow you to micro-adjust the spring force required to clip in and out of your pedals
  • Secure Engagement: Deliver 4 degrees of float, which assures just the right amount of movement while also providing adequate pedal engagement security
  • Built to Last: Made from heat treated forged steel that delivers durable long lasting performance even under the most severe riding conditions

Ok ,

ES600 pedal is less desirable than the A 600 it replaced.

one on ebay NOS is asking over twice the price of a new one.

So I’ll ask the gang if they have a nearly new A600 shimano pedals they would be willing to part with.

Baring that how about a es600 at a reasonable price that I could try out .

Any experience with the A 520 pedal which is the precursor of the A 600 & es 600  (( not the double sided m 520)

Bernard,

I have used the A520 on several single bikes and on a tandem for many issue-free miles. Good foot support, they work well, and, IMHO, fit the Riv aesthetic as well as aclipless pedal can They are also available used in good shape for not much money, which is a bonus.

I've not used the A520, but I have used, extensively, the old Dura Ace single sided PD 7410 pedal* (single sided mountainb-bike-type retention) that have a slightly bigger body than the M520s and I haven't found that they support my foot a great deal more than the latter; I guess it depends on your shoes. I do miss the double-sided retention, but then I ride fixed gears where flipping a pedal is a bit more awkward than with a double sided pedal. I use the PD 7410s solely on "gofast road bikes" where I negotiate fewer tricky high traffic intersections.

Piaw rides a hellofalot more than I do so I take his opinions seriously, but OTOH, I do like double sided pedals for quick click-in at high-traffic junctions where you have to get in and get going to cross a busy intersection; the other place I prefer 2-sided is off road where I might have to get started from a standstill on a steep incline on a soft surface.

I recently got a set of MKS Solution pedals, big platform on one side., spd clips on the other. They're nicely weighted, so you can easily pick the side you want. I got mine from blue lug: https://global.bluelug.com/mks-solution-pedal-siver.html

For what it's worth the Shimano T421 (https://amzn.to/47UiDeI) are much cheaper ($60), sere the same function, and have the benefit that the cleat tension on these are perfect for little kids and adults new to clipless. My kids use them and are highly satisfied.

I’m a fan of the Shimano PD-T8000 pedals, which I use on my so-called gravel bike, which is just a Surly Cross-Check. I got the pedals new for about $90.00, not the suggested retail price of $130.00.
