We need some fun threads in these trying times. COVID-19 has taken a lot, but it can’t have everything. Most of us live in places where biking is still considered safe during a pandemic. As long as that’s the case, the wheels of my beautiful blue Clem will be rolling, eating up the miles in a lovely Nevada spring.

Post your 30 days of biking photos of you with your Rivendell here! I’ll go first. I missed Day 1, but I have the Apple Watch workout to prove I rode. I found some new protected trails, all blacktop, and had a blast. My family was happy to be rid of me - between the conference calls my husband was having and the school Zoom sessions my sons were attending, my banging around in the kitchen was irritating all of them. Day 2 took me to the drive-up window of the bank. Not terribly exciting, but the sun felt so good and the errand was necessary. I love doing errands by bike!

There are lots of people out on bikes right now; I want to tell them it’s 30 Days of Biking so they can work towards the goal, too. Sadly, most of the kids I’ve seen are on bikes one size too small, at least. Also, most of the kids are wobbly and don’t appear confident; biking is not something they do often, I’d guess. But maybe we’ll make some new converts out of them anyway.

Anyone else? I'm the next in line, guy who already posts too much? Ok FINE here goes.

Not a picture OF me (nobody wants that) but a couple FROM me on my ride today. I didn't ride yesterday, either, but will endeavour to do the rest of 30 Days of Biking.

I was going to start my own Frank Jones thread but it's not really worthy of all that, so here it is. I'm currently singlespeed only and the 36x18 sounded low to me, but I had the parts and the neighborhood hills to climb with them and bolted it up. So far I like it in a "just relax and coast, what's your hurry" kinda way when the road tips forward and I spin out, but we'll see. It's either going to become a 36/28 up front, or the big ring will get bigger and I'll start from scratch.

Day One in the books!

I haven’t done anything for 30 days in a row since I was in Jr. High.
BUT,
In the last 2 weeks I’ve ridden 57 miles on the new Sam hillborne, which is more than the previous 6 months combined.  I’m averaging every other day, but I’m wanting to every day.
The best part is that my sons are really getting into it now.
Here’s my oldest and I at Forest Park the other day.

Joe - you may start 30 days of biking on a Frank and end on a custom. Nathan - that’s a lot of miles!

The school I teach at shut down 3 weeks ago. We’ve been on “lockdown” since, but I do escape daily for a ride. I have many bikes and ride them all but the ones the get ridden the most are my Rivendells (custom and my new Saluki). The streets around Seattle are very light and downtown is starting to look look deserted...boarded up windows, mainly homeless people wandering. A couple pics from this weeks rides below. Ride 22 coming later today.

I am a teacher as well, and like Rob, I make sure to leave the house everyday for a ride - an even rotation of my stable of Rivs, depending on the ride. With my wife being a teacher as well, and both our kids at home, any excuse I can think of to get out for a little zen on the bike is essential. Went all the way down to San Jose the other day on the Bay Trail and it was a complete Ghost town. The vibe up in Redwood City and San Carlos is far less depressing. Most places are closed but almost all the restaurants are doing to go food so that's at least something.

I'm in, in a slightly different way.  I cannot always go for a ride, so I pledge to go for 30 rides in 30 days.  If I miss a ride one day, I'll go on an additional ride, hopefully the day previous or the day after.

Tonight will be my second ride and I hope to see some  Cherry Blossoms in bloom at the Japanese House in our local park.

Roberta,

My current riding availability isn't conducive to the goal, either, to the point that I'm lucky if I can get 5 miles in a day and often that's not going to happen. Which is to say I'm out! What people call 30 Days of Riding isn't really a thing I can do right now and I gotta be realistic and not pretend I can. You all have fun!

Adding: But I'm still glad I got to show off my new Riv. Turns out a singlespeed is great exercise on short hilly rides!

Day 1 of 30.
Forest Park.  8.57 mile ride from my house and back.
Some observations:
1. For the most part, except for some love-drunk teenagers, people are observing the social distancing, even in the park.
2. Our St. Louis County parks were all officially shut down yesterday.  That’s a bummer.
3. Our St. Louis City parks are open, but not to automobile traffic.  My usual bike route is unaffected.
4. The HD photo capabilities of the iPhone XR are spectacular for my Sam Hillborne appreciation, but poor for my self-esteem.

I know that Carquinez route between Crockett and Martinez, that's a great ride. Especially the section they closed to cars (after too many landslides) and eventually rebuilt as an awesome bike path.

Okay.  I'm in.  I've been on my bike every day for the past two weeks, mostly short-ish rides around my lovely Napa Valley.  My wife and I are both teachers learning to teach online from home, so it's been important for me to clear out of the house on occasion to give her privacy and get me some exercise.  I'll use today as day 1 of 30.  A short ride--about ten miles all together--around the neighborhoods, up Dry Creek and into the local open space park for a short jaunt on my lovely MIT Atlantis.

Leah, thanks for the challenge!  I'm going to try for 30 rides even though I've only been going on alternate days so I don't "over do it."  However, I'm far enough from my hip surgery to do a daily ride, even if it's short.  I missed April 1 & 2, but took off today on my favorite route.  Good luck to all on this challenge and remember, it's not how far or how fast you go, it's all about enjoying the fresh air and moving at a pace that pleases you.

Today started with wind and rain, chilly/cold, and extra wool layers.  Mid-way through the rain and wind subsided and the sun peeked through the clouds.  Here's the green Clem(entine) leaning against one of my favorite madrone trees.  (It's my first time adding a photo, so I hope it works!)

In the rain of the PNW,

Hey Joyce,
I’m 15 days into recovery from hip surgery. About how long did it take you to feel comfortable to get back on your bike after your surgery?

I took my first gentle ride about 7 weeks after surgery. Until then I was walking (lots) and doing the post-surgery exercises that had been prescribed. My surgeon said I could do 2 things wrong regarding activity: do too much or do too little. I chose to get physical therapy and really focus on a proper gait, and strength and flexibility exercises with the guidance of a professional. I recommend that even though my surgeon didn’t require follow-up PT. I’ve slowly added time and distance to my daily walk and have been extra careful not to over-do-it on the bike. Congrats on your new hip! I hope your recovery is going well.

Thanks Joyce,
Really appreciate the information. Helps me put things in perspective. My first post op consultation is this coming Monday and I’m hopeful that I’ll get limits on how much I can do. Up till now I’ve tried to be careful not to overdo anything so as not to mess up the surgery.
And I’m also a bit concerned about PT because of Covid19 and being that close to a therapist. I’m looking forward to figuring it out with my surgeon.
Thanks again,

Joyce, your photo came through beautifully. I love how you have set up your Clem. The reflectors on the fenders are just so cool looking, and I love that bag on the rear. Very convenient! And, of course, this nurse is cheering you on your hip surgery recovery and so pleased to hear how well you are coming along. Physical therapists are some sort of magic, I’m sure you agree.

I hope your recovery goes just as smoothly, Richard. And I hope you can find a safe way to involve PT.

And cheers to the teachers who are using their stolen moments for Rivendell rides in spring weather! And cheers to Roberta because I love her and her zany idea to make up her rides for the days she misses!

These are the feel-good stories I was hoping to hear when this thread was started. You all are SO fun.

22 mi / 3,000 ft climbing gravel out and back from home in Columbia to Rose Creek on Italian Bar Road in the Stanislaus Forest. Contractors are working on the road just past Rose Creek, so they have the road blocked with K-rail--an urban touch imported to the Forest. I left my bike at the barriers and walked down to the creek to drink my tea and found photos waiting when I got back. Other photos of spring working on springing. More on Instagram, @tuolumnebikes

Leah,
Thanks for starting this post. I have noticed that the Clem L has been unburdened despite the beautiful racks and basket. Just evidence that your Custom or Cheviot can be a dedicated equivalent of your sports car instead of your carry all prepared for the end of the world Mom van.
I will post any rides I take on my non-Copenhagened Rivs since you seem to want to discriminate against trendsetters like Joe and I.

Ryan’s just salty because I told him his ebike doesn’t count 🤣

Oh, fine, post your motorbikes if you want!

It’s been nice riding my bike around without a load - you are right about that. My loaded bike days are likely limited or even over now. Next year my sons will be at 2 different schools and it would seem that driving is the only way we’re gonna pull those off. Enjoy every day; the days and then the years, fly by...

Rode all 4 days but can only be credited with two (Copenhagen Wheel controversy). Today’s was the shortest under 5 solo miles on a Rivendell Hubbuhhubbuh Tandem sans stoker. Apparently 39 degrees is not warm enough for my beautiful better half on what was a rainy cloudy day. Excited for near 60 degrees and sunshine tomorrow will see if that promising forecast will invoke my fair weather spouse out for a spin. I can’t even bribe her with ice cream or coffee because our local favorites are all closed due to the Chrono Virus Pandemic.

Fun thread!  I've been working from home since March 19th, and I think I only missed one day of riding, maybe two.  Today was chilly and overcast.  Actually great riding weather.  Luckily the paths were a lot less crowded than they have been lately.  I snapped this when I stopped for a drink and to watch the stream for a little bit.  Also first ride with my blue cargo net from Riv-- love it!

Joe, I hope you do go out when you get a chance. Exercising and biking are good for body and soul.

Nathan, it looks like you're enjoying the heck out of your new bike. Getting a Rivendell has improved my life more than I imagined. Looks like it will be like that for you, too. (Your face might start to hurt from the smiling.)

For everyone else, I did 5 rides in 5 days, although I really missed one day and went on two rides yesterday. My rides tend to be 10-20 miles, but my most common route is 12 miles.

Yesterday, I rode to the Japanese House in Philadelphia and took pictures of flowering Cherry Blossoms. I'll post pics later this week. Today, I met a gentleman when we both had stopped at the same place to admire the view, and we started chatting. It turns out that he is good friend with an old acquaintance of mine. You never know what additional delights riding can bring!

I'm trying for 30 rides this month also.

However I missed 2 days but made up a bit with 16 miles today and hope to double up on rides by riding morning and afternoon for a couple of days later in the month.

My bike's not a Riv but set up similar to many Rivs.

Its a Trek 950 mt bike made over to my liking.

I have been a Riv fan a long time and actually had a Riv Road back in 1999.

Perhaps there will be another one in my future.

Day 5. High winds got me procrastinating. I took two long walks and then did my ride while my banana bread baked.

About that; COVID has made me some sort of pioneer woman. I am so careful with using all the food and wasting nothing. The longer I can make our groceries stretch, the less I must go out of the house. Three bananas had gone brown on the counter - banana bread! I do bake sourdough bread, but I’m not otherwise much of a baker, so this was a fun detour from the norm. I timed my ride to beat the oven timer, and we ate banana bread hot and buttered in the spa.

Perhaps there will be another one in my future.

Day 6. Baby Bear was my companion - isn’t he yummy? Darling and just a CHUM. We set out to do Baby Bear’s Favorite Trail but were stymied by the high winds that suddenly roared through our canyon. It always scares me when the you can feel that it’s a cold wind - like you are feeling the front coming at you. Not wanting to be caught in the rain nor desiring to be blown about on our bikes, we cut out at the 2 mile mark. Baby Bear rode his Specialized Hotrock (#notariv) but he did have his Rivendell Banana Sax proudly strapped to his bars. He is wishing the Clem Rider would outgrow his little Clem and that he, Baby Bear, would get tall enough to straddle that little Clem. I am not in favor of either boy growing up.

Happy Biking Day 6!

We are currently sheltering in place in my area but individual outdoor exercise is still permitted.  I would be losing my mind if it wasn't.  I live less than a half a mile from a wonderful beach boardwalk and the weather has been perfect, mid 70's with balmy breezes.  I have been trying get in at least 20 miles a day and am now up to 155 miles for April.  It is so nice out that it has been easy to stay out longer.  The pictures are of me with my Soma San Marcos, the San Marcos, and my Appaloosa. I got the San Marcos in 2012 and the Appaloosa in 2017.  Both show effects of beausage and I love them all the more for it.

Ann, that’s awesome.  20 miles a day!  14 made my legs go wobbly.

Here’s Ride #4  in 30 days from today at Forest Park. It was a balmy 82 degrees.  GLORIOUS repose on the shores of Lake Jefferson here.

PLUS, there was a pleasant surprise:
I’ve had 2 other Riv-Rider encounters in St. Louis.  For both, they were too busy to chat.
Not so today, with Riv-Rider Jeff Smith, who has a Sam in nearly my exact setup (and same 51cm size) in the Riv-flagship aquamarine color.
Who are the other Riv-heads in the ‘Lou?

I rode a lot this weekend and yesterday my quads hurt. So, I decided a walk would be better and that’s what I did.

This is from my ride tonight. These are boat houses in a continuous row on the other side of the river from where I bike. I believe these are LED lights and they can be set for any color. Tonight—purple!

Gabriel, I have experienced the same thing working from home. I have been getting a great ride in each afternoon, ranging from 10 to 20 miles. Luckily, I got a gravel trail close to my house.

Leah, I have been loving the threads you have been creating. So awesome! Thank you!

Today, I got out on my Atlantis, which I have been removing racks and baskets from over the last week in an attempt to differentiate it from my cargo Clem-L. Whoosh, it was so fun. I feel like I am falling in love with my Atlantis all over again. But that’s pretty typical for me. I fall in love with my Rivs on a monthly, if not weekly basis. I think I am gonna take the back rack off next and get a saddle bag to specialize the Atlantis for spritely day rides.

Day 8. Knowing the weather would take an ugly turn in a few hours, I decided to hit the old dusty trail just before lunch. The sun was bright and the flowers were blooming, and I was so so so happy on my pretty blue Clem. I decide to take my newly discovered top secret trail which runs behind a development. It’s paved blacktop with wild desert on one side and the backyards of homes on the other. It is an 11 mile loop back to my house, with the first half being downhill.

I was going at speed, and I had my Air Pods in, and I was singing. I was starring in my own show; my hair was flying and my legs were churning and I was just so thrilled. But then, hmm...something on the road. Wait, that’s not what I think it is, is it? No, please, God, no...

Today I went on two mega exciting rides!  Ride one was to the bike shop to take delivery of my Steve Potts Trail Bike.  I packed the frame and a bunch of parts on my Big Fat Dummy and eagerly (and cautiously!!!) took it all home to build it up.  Ride two was the Potts's maiden voyage, illuminated by the amazing pink supermoon.  There has been about a year and a half of buildup to that ride, and I am happy to say that I was not let down!  The Potts is quick, agile, and incredibly smooth.  I am so looking forward to getting it dialed in and riding it a whole bunch!!!

Not at all concerned about hitting 30 rides in April, but here are photos from today's ride to American Camp Station, an abandoned fire camp in the Stanislaus National Forest. I've been doing rides from home, so I'm looking harder at familiar places. The felled Ponderosa pine landed on the former driveway area where the service bays for the garage were, so it's flat. The scatter field is just a cool deconstructed look at a tree.

The epiglottis oak is a big completely hollow black oak with twisted folds of scarred bark. There's about four dead trunks and two live trunks sprouting from the top. Maybe there's a perfect date and time when light would shine straight down the cavity--tree henge?

Old trees just grow stronger...

Carl, thanks for the John Prine reference.  He was such a talented songwriter with so many great songs; what a loss to the music world.

I love the idea of tree henge...will you keep checking that and let us know if/when it happens?

Ya' know that old trees just grow stronger
And old rivers grow wilder ev'ry day
Old people just grow lonesome
Waiting for someone to say, "Hello in there, hello"

Temp 45 degrees gusty winds of 18-35 MPH right out of the North

Thanks, Joe and Leah!  And in reference to your fender installment, congratulations to you, Leah!  The first attempts at wrenching usually involve a lot of choice words, but the results upon completion are so satisfying!

Today's ride was a rescue mission!  My office plant has been brought home to be nursed back to health. The university where I work has issued a complete closure of facilities (except to essential staff) for at least two weeks, if not more.  Up until now I've been going in once a week to water it, but it hasn't been the same watering schedule as before.  SO for this mission I installed a front rack (Pass & Stow 3-rail) and a Wald 139 on the Potts and brought my ailing plant, and some other stuff, home.  It handled a front load quite well-- I'd say there was about 15 lbs of stuff there.

Day 9. I rode only 7.2 miles but I beat the rain home, and that’s what counted.

Later on, I managed (with guidance) to get my rear fender back on my bike, and hopefully, correctly. If I end up in an accident due to a fender mishap, it will be my fault this time.

It can rain all week, I don’t care.

On my Tuesday ride the center-rear fender bolt went AWOL (thankfully, only a block from home).
I try to keep up appearances and all, but I am discovering it to be difficult with the Riv-Nation

For one, in this 30-day quest, I’m only averaging about every other day, even in the midst of the Co-Ro Shutdown.  Some of that is just life getting in the way, like this bolt, or a long day in the Urgent Care/ER with my son and a nail in his foot, or the stupid weather, which was much to windy for my tastes earlier in the week.
Anyways, here’s Sam in his  own Urgent Care at my LBS (doing curb-side repairs!). They removed the back fender and ordered a clamp which should be in next week.  The Tech That Built Sam up commented “Oh yeah, I remember we weren’t working with a lot of thread on that bolt”.

I’m also discovering that most of you have significantly more positive relationships with your cameras, both in your use of them and their view of you.
I believe this image from yesterday’s ride illustrates both points handily.  Yikes.

Yesterdays ride was 30 miles through Sonora and the ag lands to the south. The photo is the Wells Fargo building in Columbia State Historic Park about a mile from home.

Columbia has the largest intact collection of gold rush architecture, so the State of California bought the whole downtown to create the park in the 1940s. There's still animosity toward the State among some of the locals about losing their town. The truth is it would have all collapsed by now without the millions spent on stabilizing and restoring the buildings. The businesses are run as concessions with some serving mostly tourist needs and the bars and restaurants drawing both tourists and the locals. When the park exhibits close down in the evening and the tourists find shelter, the locals still come out enjoy their town.

Now CA State Parks are closed and only the bars and restaurants are open for take out food and filling growlers. No music, no partying, a quiet street except for the guy on a bench swearing at his cell phone. Normally in the springtime the town is jammed with school buses of fourth graders on their California history field trips.

I hope you son is ok!  Not a time to get a nail in a foot.

The name of the thread is “30 days of biking!” and I’m  interpreting that to mean 30 rides in 30 days. Reality is though that I probably get 5 out of 7 days. Work, weather, fatigue gets in the way.  When I miss a day I try to get on two rides within the next day or two to make up for it.

However, what I have promised myself (and am doing )is “something” every day, and that “something “ when not riding  is walking.   So, if for some reason I don’t get on my bike one day, I will be taking a longer than usual walk. Some lucky days I get both.

It’s 53* out now and my Joe Appaloosa is calling to me.

Yikes.

I'm executing this 30-day riding challenge is a way that is similar to Roberta.  Early on, I realized I needed to alter the schedule to go back to taking longer rides on alternate days. I'm walking daily and doing yardwork so activity is really not a problem.  Here are a couple of pics from the last couple of rides; after an Instagram conversation with PurpleRiv about watercolors, I started intentionally classifying all the spring colors I was seeing on my rides.  What is purple?  What is lilac or pink?  When would  you say it's raspberry and not fuchsia?  How about green, light green, deep green, lime, etc?  Be well, friends.  Enjoy the bounty of spring!

I love all the plants/flowers colors mixed in with the bike photo, Joyce! I've noticed this combination on some Instagrams, too, I'm going to endeavor to notice these things more on my rides. I have a tendency to tunnel vision on the road in front of me, I need to look around and see more..maybe literally stop and smell the roses! 🙂🌹

Joyce, I love your idea! Gorgeous flowers, and you know I’m partial to your Clementine, too.

Bruce - jealous. I love biking near water the absolute most.

Here is the Nevada version of THAT. Sorry to get silly, but we’ve got to keep it interesting over here.

I’m really putting these fenders to the test.

Roberta:

Obey the call of the Joe.  The Joe will never steer you wrong.

I did 20 miles today.  It was absolutely beautiful out.  I had a strong head wind going out which gave me a great workout and a very fun zippy ride going back.

Greetings,
Last night was ride 30 since school closed starting my quarantine adventures. I forgot what day it was though and I didn’t ride a Rivendell🙀. I’ll make up for it today....onward to 60!

I obeyed! 8.5 miles total, into headwind on the way out. Headwind on the way back. How does that happen!?

I love everyone’s pictures, especially when I get to enjoy your spring. We’re starting to get some color in Eastern PA, but the forsythia hasn’t started to bloom yet.

Great posts today!  Thanks all for sharing your rides here!

My ride today was a quick shakedown ride for some upgrades I made to my Rockhopper/Crust cargo bike.  I replaced the stock drivetrain with a modern mtb one with a 10sp on the back.  I put on some Microshift shifters-- set to friction, of course.  Very happy with the upgrades, they're a huge improvement over the stock ones!

I just LOVE the color of your Legolas.

I rode my Joe A. north to under the Betty Ross Bridge in phila and back. 17.5 miles round trip. It's not a particularly pretty ride, but the ride is ever changing --downtown, bike path, street, neigborhoods, MUP, etc. I'm more likely to go this way when traffic is light.

A lot of people out, but I don't understand why walkers and joggers need to be in the bike lane when there's a walking lane paralleling it, just 5 feet away. Oh, well. It's healthier than staying inside.

Well, I missed the start of this challenge(?), but I've been riding a lot!
Love that Bantam!

Rode today 22miles, not a Rivendell, but one of my favorite bikes none the less.
This is the only bike I have that has a name; she's called Big Baby and I was riding this bike because I just got the new drip camo handlebar bag from Dark Realm and I am loving it, fits the BMX bars well.

Sounds like a plan! My standard ride the is the SRT from Center city.  I figured it would be really crowded today.  One  caveat-- I don't/can't ride very fast.  I hope you'd still ride your Legolas so I can admire the color  😊  .

That Legolas IS a beauty.

Biking day 12: Featuring a different Clem.  I was heading home from a ride and ran into my husband and #theclemrider on his #littlesilverclem. They were heading to the park to play ball, so I rode along, too. It was short and sweet - there’s another system of rain heading our way.

Happy Easter!
