Thinking of getting a Sam Hillborne in this color and would like to see some examples. How do you like the color?

mustard 2001 riv road custom.jpg

2001 custom riv road...needing some TLC...but gives you an idea. Listed in the 2000 or so frame color brochure as Harvest Gold

BTW it is a great color in sunlight or overcast conditions....and I like to think I was an early adopter before Riv incorporated mustard into production models like the Clem or Appaloosa. Originally I was contemplating red...but I wanted something unique...no regrets about the color choice

Thanks! I've seen lots of lovely harvest gold/mustard builds  on this forum as well and I'm glad Riv has made this color available again. I suspect if you search this forum for gold or mustard rivendells you will find lots of stellar examples

I can’t seem to find the photo, but several years ago, Riv posted a photo of a mustard Clem L that belonged to Grant. I’ve been a keen follower of Rivendell since the mid-2000s, but my interest waned a bit somewhere around the years leading up to the pandemic. But when I saw that photo of that mustard Clem, it sparked something in me. The color, the swoopy style of the frame… this concept of something called a “Hillibike”… I knew at that point I would make it a goal to someday own a mustard-colored Rivendell. A Gus and a Toyo Atlantis later, and I finally purchased my mustard Sam (still waiting to be built up).

If anyone knows where to find the photo I referenced, I’d love to see it again.

I really dig the yellow-matter-custard paint. It's got some sparkle to it I don't think the interwebs gets across.
I'm almost ready to roll. Got to get the lights hooked up. Fenders eventually. The weather if finally getting ride-able for a non-beater bike. So looking forward to a first spin in the next week or so.

Closer-up of the paint.
ciao.

Ryan,
Thanks for the info!
I had this AR for a while but never really looked into the year, nor have I looked into the history.
If you have more to share, please do!
This is a 56cm/26" that I overhauled.

Thanks Ryan,

Those are flipped Losco bars. I tend to always end up flipping my bars (Albatross, Choco (though many would say that flipped is the Choco's primary position)).
Here's a better angle of the bars:

Nice Hillborne! I have those same Shimano shifters and that same rear deraileur in a short cage that I had to fix/modify when the secondary shifter spring anchor broke. Had several sets of these shifters I think I got from my old bike shop years ago. Kept one and sent rest to Rivendell.

Thanks,

Reginald Alexis

I ordered my AR in August of 1997...a memorable year because in Winnipeg, we had a truly epic spring flood when much of Southern Manitoba was under water. I have the paperwork somewhere, but I think my frame with Phil BB and Tange Rollerball headset, cream fill and name on top tube was 1375.00. It is Waterford-made , 753 with 531 forks....fun fact is that 753 has to be silver-brazed and Reynolds required framebuilders to pass a test because silver-brazing is less fault tolerant than brass-brazing. Waterford's builders consistently scored highly on that test and therefore were in a class by themselves. Frames took around 6 hours to build....later customs take 20+ hours to build.

Yours looks to be the same vintage as mine. I was intrigued by the AR because I already had (and still have) a 93 X0-1. The AR is plusher-riding. Garrett Lai of Bicycle Guide, when he reviewed the bike compared it to a Land Rover or a Merceded....in contrast , the X0-1 is more like a sports car. Both fun bikes

I think in 1998, the marriage with Waterford went a bit pear-shaped(Herons and Rivendells consumed a lot of set-up time compromising Waterford's own brand,IIRC) and they went to Match with Curt Goodrich among others...and started making Rivendells with other tubing; mixing Columbus, Vitus and maybe True Temper with Reynolds 725 and the buyer had a few more options

The finishing touch!  (Well, at least for now)  I've long admired the old Suntour bear trap pedals, so when I saw Soma offering a discount on the MKS XC-IIIs I could not resist. Nor was I able to resist springing for a bit of gold anodized bling.

I love seeing the variety of builds inspired by the Hillborne (both new and old), which confirms my impression that the  Sam is truly a versatile design.    Steve in AVL

Here's my '25 mustard Sam that I built up this winter, below my wife's Crust, unhappily stuck inside due to the snow (though I may try to take it for a spin later today). Speaking of which, if anyone in NY's Hudson Valley is interested in a 52cm Clem L, I'm getting it prepped to sell this month for the thaw.

Great looking Sam. I’m noticing the thumb shifter is next to the grip and then the brake lever. How does that feel? I’ve got the levers on reversed sides and next to the grips. This gets the brake lever clamp bolt out of the way so the shifter can move. Feels very ergonomic this way.
