Happy New Year, all. Wishing you many happy miles, health, and prosperity this year.

Here's a quick snapshot of Leo outside of Cub House central earlier this morning.

Happy new year! I took it pretty easy today but got 20 km in on the Evasion. I hope to get a longer ride on the Hillborne in tomorrow.  Been lucky with the weather the past week - no precip and staying a few degrees above freezing. Rain is coming tomorrow night though and who knows when it'll end, being the PNW!

Warning ***Not a Riv Post***

My wife, Stephanie, and I went out on the traditional NYD Ride, despite the dreary weather. Biked up Twin Peaks while it was still clear. Descended thru Cole Valley in the rain and made our to Golden Gate park. Rain was on and off, never that hard; no down pours. Made our way to Ocean Beach, said hi to the mighty Pacific, and turned around for home. Stephanie's front battery powered light unfortunately died around then and the dark got darker. Kept close so my dynamo light showed us both. Still had a couple of drivers be, well bad. But made it back safely 😁

We took Crust bikes cause 1) It's my only fendered bike. 2) It's Stephanie's only bike with lights mounted on it. 2026 job is to get her Riv Ram outfitted with a dynamo. But she originally wanted to take that :)

Good stuff, Ben. Thanks for sharing.

I'm planning a Bay Area bike trip at the end of March. Definitely plan to bike through the areas you mentioned. Also, excited to bike through the Presidio and head over to Sausalito.

Any idea if there are local Riv rides in SF? Hoping we can reboot an LA Riv ride in April.

Well, I have a Riv photo from today, for all those I left clutching their pearls in horror yesterday :p

Stephanie and I did a pretty similar ride as yesterday, but we took our Ram's today. But as we were about to set off, it started to rain again! And again, it was not in the forecast for another few hours :( It was wet going up Twins, and braking once cresting the top was slightly terrifying at first (Note to self: replace pads with Salmon Kool-Stop's) But after descending down it cleared up and remained dry for the rest of the ride. At Ocean Beach we deviated from yesterday's route and went down Sunset Dunes, which was very windy, but beautiful as always. Then the slow climb out of the Sunset and back home.

Tony, if you're not aware there is a Bay Area Riv Riders group. It seems less active than it used to be, but sometimes people organize rides there. I'm not particularly aware of any upcoming ones, but maybe you could organize your own. And you can always hit me up for a ride :) Presidio/Marin Headlands is great riding. You should stop by Scenic Routes in the Richmond where you'll likely to find a Riv or 2, as well as a wonderful nonprofit bike shop supporting the local community. And, who knows, going up Twins you might spot Will from Riv or Luke from Merry Sales on his Big Ol' Atlantis!

Second photo is looking from the top of Twins as 2 bike riders descend the backside. We chatted with them for a bit: he was on a nice Colnago and she had an e-Cargo bike that was not charged so technically in acoustic mode. Both bikes were hers; I guess he was just visiting and borrowed the Colagno. You can also see Mount Diablo off in the distance.

This isn't a very compelling photo but Ben's made me realize I need to also make up for posting a non-Riv on NYD. Got out for a 52 km ride today on the Bombadil, went to see off an old bridge that's imminently being dismantled now that the replacement is nearly ready. I was going to ride over it, but being an old bridge, it's quite hostile to bikes/pedestrians so we opted not to!  I hoped the bike/ped path on the new bridge would be ready, but didn't appear to be. Will come back in a few weeks.

Jason, I completely disagree, that's a great photo! Love the idea for the ride and the juxtaposition of the old and new bridges with the bikes in the foreground. That photo tells a story!

I agree with Ben - that's a good photo, Jason.

I got out today on my Fargo.  They paint these utility boxes which is cool, so I rode up on the sidewalk to get this photo.  On new year's day I went for a hike with my wife on a trail that was new to us.  It's not well-travelled, and that made it fun, like we were explorers, identifying the different animals and seeing their side trails.  At times we were on our knees, carefully crawling under the weighted-down branches.  This is only 20 minutes from home, but the weather was so different from my town.

This morning was also the last ride with alt/swept bars for me, at least for the foreseeable future.  I've now tried three different bars, with different grips, at different heights, lengths (thanks to a new collection of stems), and angles (the combinations/permutations with each of these factors is a lot, and I've tried it all!).  There were things I liked about the bars, but I often had sore wrists/hands vs. drop bars.  Bike is at the shop getting switched back over to drops and brifters.  My Roadini has drops and has been perfect since day one.  The Fargo was never perfect, so the alt/swept bars were an experiment.

Happy new year everyone!

David, love the photo! So frosty and frozen. And superb Atlantis build; love see Bubbly pedals on Rivs :)

Yesterday Stephanie and I rode our matching Rams, today we rode our matching blue bikes: her Ram and my '87 Ritchey Outback. We beat the storms today and had nice clear weather, though there was a mighty wind. Went up to Land's End this time and the photo is at the Legion of Honor looking out towards the Pacific. I partially choose the Ritchey 'cause I had just put the Blue B17 on it that Stephanie got me for a Christmas gift :)

I'm gonna dilute the Riv content again by posting another photo from today's ride on the Evasion. In the summer, this view is mostly obscured by foliage, but in winter it's stunning. This path is a great ride on the Rivs as well, but I went on to ride a long stretch of blue-rated MTB trail which requires a lot more walking on my Rivs vs. this thing. if I still had the Susie, it would have handled it a bit better, though I have to say the disc brakes make a big difference once things get steeper than 20% grade.

Any how, I'll add some pics from earlier today

Wow I love the wintry scene; here it is decidedly more classic PNW wetness.  Rode up to a nice neighbourhood viewpoint during a break in the rain, but rode home with the poncho on.

It's the middle of our summer here in Canberra, and we did our customary New Year's day ride out to Yass and back along Mountain Creek Road. This quite substantial bridge is on a small backroad that carries little traffic. Looking at the brass plaque fastened in the concrete at the bridge approach gives the construction date as 1931, so I guess it was largely a make-work project during the depression.

The river level is extremely low at the moment. Compare the water level at the pylons with that in the photo below, taken from the other side of the river in winter 2011.

I just got a Roadini and did my first real ride on Friday, 35 miles to/from Avila Beach, CA. Then 55 miles to/from Morro Bay, CA on Saturday. What a pleasure to ride! Kudos to Tristen Moss for the build. The guys riding vintage steel bikes especially appreciated Riv’s current spin on the classic form.

These bars (bosco bullmoose) have been on and off my bikes many times as I have had this love/hate relationship with them. I finally took them into work and clamped them into a bench vise and used the handle off of a floor jack to move the ends down a couple of centimeters. Much better. It was easier, and turned out way better, than I thought it would. Here’s the Susie on the way home.

I agree with Patrick Moore.

Photo of the year so far!
Or photos...both photos have so much detail.

Armand's bike is so cool and so well decked out and looks to be ridden quite a bit. Wonderful!

There are so many details to detect on his bike but also in the background of these particular photos.

Nice job Armand!

Perhaps we should start a list of observations from these photos.

Love the overall look of the Purple Platypus, the Dura Ace derailers,  the matching non drive side purple front light, the drive side front light mount fashioned from a chainring, the Rene Herse tires, use of voile straps, wrapped kickstand, single pannier, the fenders, basket and well the whole package.

Now as to the background,  there's a body lying back there or perhaps two bodies on the 2nd of the two photos. Or perhaps that's a pile of clothing in the background visible just beyond the headset but definitely someone lying down visible beyond the rear saddle bag.

The ferris wheel , the roller coaster , the hills all add to it.

The first photo is great also with the view in the background,  the hills, the palm trees and all.

What are the white buildings in the far distance on the right side?

Fun stuff! I would love to leisurely ride around that area. It's different than my area but my area also has sites to behold, just different.

Chris, thanks for the kudos on the Fiat. Not to turn this into a car thread but it's a dandy little car, just right for a fella and all his biking ... er, gear.

January riding content: As I mentioned the Clem turns out to be a dandy snow bike. The cross country ski trails around here are melting in the warm weather and provide a pretty good challenge, from nice and dry and white (easy) to grey and wet and icy (kinda spooky), plus mud. It's the Clem's steering and wheelbase and the easy dismount through the frame that all conspire to make snow riding a breeze. The tires I'm running are nothing special, 50c Gravelkings, but maybe their compound is good in the cold. Mainly I think its the steering, which, frankly, I didn't care for at first - too much wheel flop. But in the really mucky stuff and chunky ice the front wheel just plows along unperturbed.

Something I discovered - a tip of sorts: When confronted with the freeze/thaw conditions where you have ice covered with water, very slippery, if possible veer over into some available dirt and get the tires coated with grit. Then you can ride down the ice with aplomb, until you feel like the dirt has worn off then veer off into grit again.

Decomposing Ski Track.jpg

BTW, riding clean, dry, hardpacked snow is like riding smooth gravel; plenty of grip and its clean!

@Gordon,

I can fully relate you in your descriptions of how your Clem rides. Despite the fact that I have not ridden in the snow with my Clem yet, I know for a fact that with the long wheelbase helps tremendously in stabilizing the bicycle over roots and rocks on dirt roads or trails with less worry or anxiety. I am very pleased to own such a bicycle.

Thank you for sharing your experiences in riding in snow on your Clem.

It's been clear for a week and we haven't had any snow accumulation to date, but it's been chilly enough that the frost stays put in shady spots.  Got a pretty big loop in today between errands and a social ride.  I feel bad for the Hillborne being a commuter "hybrid" these days, after a few years of more glamorous randonneuring and all-road riding. But remains a very useful and lovely bike in any arrangement. We're coming up on 14,000 km together.

January in Vancouver BC ended mild and wet, but we had a few hours this afternoon between rain systems so I got out.  It was quite warm - alarmingly so - about 11C.  Got 45km of mixed terrain riding in, and as I suspected, Capilano river flow was very high with the recent rains coupled with the snowmelt from these mild temps. Normally I share photos along the Seymour river, which flows from our other watershed; this watershed is to the west.

My condolences to those who are unable to ride right now because of "real" winter conditions, I do not take it for granted, even if I get soaked!
