135mm rear hub

Hi,

I know that Rivendell, White Industries and Velo Orange all sell 135mm rear hubs, but does anyone know of some places (ideally Europe) that sell 135mm 35H rear hubs?

I assume you're after a QR hub. Hope RS4 is available in 36h and 135mm OLN. But the freewheel mechanism is fairly noisy, if that's something that bothers you.

Or you can get the Shimano Saint FH-M820 rear hub in 36h with 135x10mm thru axle, and get one of the Novatec 10mm QR skewers to use it in QR dropouts.

Suzue appears to make an axle cap to convert their 130mm hubs to 135.  Merry Sales / SOMA has them in the US, if you can't find them in Europe.  (I guess it's possible that they had them made as an exclusive.)  Until I read your question and started looking, I honestly had no idea this had become so hard to find.  I think the bike industry is irrevocably broken.  Thank goodness for Rivendell and VO.

Assuming you have the option, I'd suggest visiting bike co-ops, want-ads, re-sellers, pawn shops, etc, and check out old mountain bikes from the late 80s through early 00s.  There are millions of usable hub sets out there, that can be had for a song.  (At least here in the States.)   Some of them being extremely high end, quality pieces.  Even if you have to cut them out of some old wheels, they could still be a bargain.

We get them from Velocity. We've been very pleased with the quality. We have had no complaints from customers. They have a wide variety of options for drillings, and disc VS non-disc.

I'm not quite sure I understand what you're looking for exactly.

At least here in Germany you can get 135mm QR rear hubs easily. Many of them from Shimano. Ones with 36 holes are a little harder than 32 holes, but still pretty available.

Where it gets interesting is if you don't want it in black, or if you don't want to have a visible disc rotor mount. (I compromised about the latter for my Clem wheelset. It's always good to have components that you can use on different bikes anyway...)

If you are so mechanically inclined to swap threaded axles you caould always buy a silver 130mm bub like the RS400(Tiagra road) and swap out a longer axle and add the spacer needed .

It's a cool idea @garth but I'm going to avoid going down that rabbit hole for the time being! I've only just taught myself how to build wheels so I reckon I'll stick to one mechanical challenge at a time.

Without additional speculations or input on the world of 135mm, 36° rear hubs I definitely recommend the Silver cassette hub from Rivendell. I now have a 36° 135mm that Harry built with a Pacenti Brevet rim that he had. I sought the steel cassette body specifically.

This wheel replaced a 135mm, 32° Suzue Classica freehub with a Pacenti Brevet 9-spd with an aluminum freehub body. I detected and isolated a sort of creak/click similar to a crank arm in need of tightening that I was not tolerant of.

Hope hubs are nice and robust, but be forewarned - they are among the loudest I’ve owned. I have one on my Crust. Louder than White and Chris King, in my experience.

Here is a complete rim-brake wheel, in the UK, for a decent price that has 36 spokes and a Shimano Deore hub.  Shimano hubs are close to silent.  The only thing more-silent is a great $450 ONYX hub.

The rear Novatech stock cartridge bearing hub on my Clem runs silent. I love running silent after all the years of listening to freewheels.

The spacing is 135. They are available in 36 holes. I have a 32 hole hub.

Did you have it serviced regularly ? or did you service yourself in re-greasing the cartridge bearing hub ?

I recently had my rear hub serviced in re-greasing it with Dumonde Tech Freehub Bicycle Bike Grease Lube of which I personally bought from a member's recommendation. My rear hub was making slight clicking noises now and then. No sound now whatsoever.

Was your Novatech wheelset from with a purchase of Rivendell bicycle ?

I do like Dumonde.  The hub came with a set of Mercury wheels. I think that the shape of the hub body and many other factors impact the sound greatly.  I have many DT swiss hubs with the same set of ratchets and vastly different volumes of noise.  The loudest is on my fat bike, and approaches too loud for me.

I retired the Novatec hub when it started creaking and I didn't feel like troubleshooting.

After months of searching I finally found a 135mm rim brake hub. It's a Shimano Deore XT FH-T780. Built it up this weekend and it's great to have a hub that fits after 8 months of riding around with a 130mm hub on my Sam Hillborne. As as plus, it's completely silent when free-wheeling!

I just built myself a new 135mm OLN rim brake rear wheel with HG freehub for one of my bikes using an Onyx Vesper hub, which is completely silent. I already had a pair of Onyx disc hubs on a gravel bike - I really like the complete absence of noise from the wheel when freewheeling along quiet bush tracks - and decided that I would like the same absence of noise on the bike I normally use on road rides. Onyx only make their hubs up to 32h, though.

Yes, silence is golden in more ways than one. 

The Novatech cartridge bearing freehub on my old stock wheelset on my Clem has been my first experience with a silent freehub. Prior to that, I have had the sound of freewheels spinning in my ears for nearly forty years. So, needless to say, coasting in silence is truly a wonderful experience for me. 

If the pawls become audible, then I use some of the Dumonde Tech Pro X Freehub Grease to silence them.
