I'd like to use a spreadsheet to keep track of my parts.  I like to keep one of everything just to make sure I can always fix my bike and keep it running.  Does anyone have a spreadsheet?  I'd just use it as a template.  Thanks in advance.  It's hard keeping track of whether I have shift or brake cables, housing, etc.  I have a back up bike set exactly the same so I can always get a part off that one.  Thanks in advance.

Hi Pam,

I wish I was so organized as to have a parts spreadsheet! I only have a few iterations of spreadsheets to keep track of my bike builds, but those are all woefully out-of-date at this point (too much tinkering!). I hate data entry, but maybe someone could develop an app where you take a photo and it automatically adds the component to a spreadsheet? Maybe that already exists? Anyways, curious to see what you come up with and how it works out! Are you just wanting to keep track of consumables, like cables/housing/brake pads/etc, or are you also trying to track components like derailleurs/handlebars/stems/etc?

Here's one my friend had started and I'll add to it to keep track of what I have, need to order.  I like to keep my bike running at all times so I don't want to be told, they don't have the part.  I will have it.  For example, I like the salmon brake pads, the silver chain....  I have cables but get mixed up if I have brake or shift cables.  Hence, the spreadsheet.

Great idea, Pam.

I wish I had one to share, but so far I do not.  I'm going to put one together though.  For me it's a mix of objectives:

  • Listing each of the replaceable parts (e.g., tires) and whether I have spares (how many, brand, specs), as well as highlighting the cells where I'm looking to add (so I can search lbs / websites looking for deals).  I wouldn't list items here that I'm not looking to replace (frame, fork)
  • Things I want to buy included above, but I may list the 'nice to have' items such as cool cable ends, headset caps, water bottles
  • Perhaps in the same file, different tab, I would have the full existing spec; this may get updated over time.  I would list each part and where applicable its specs / measurements.  You could put a timestamp on these if you want to track when you bought / installed them (just another column in the file.  When I bought my Roadini from C&L in Montreal I think they sent me a list like this (spec, anyway), that would be my starting point
Easy to add column as you think on this further ("Comments", for example).

One advantage of such a spreadsheet means that if you're placing an order, say from Bluelug, you can check this list and see what you want to add (if already paying shipping, and you have the extra $ lying around)

I'll combine the best of both.  I didn't want to reinvent the wheel.  Thanks for your input.

Things I wish I would have tracked in a spreadsheet, and really the only things - what bike and when I replaced the chains and similarly, when I replace the cogset. Cogset is more important since the wear can't be as easily measured as a chain.

My current spreadsheets is parts to move out, once I photograph them and list them here and on the ibob list.

Pam has a plethora of useful Bike Life Hacks that enrich her bike life. Pam, you should do one of your Zoom lessons for the List where you show us all your hacks, habits and practices. My college-age son sat at her feet in rapt attention as she told him about bike camping and route planning. I have the sweetest video of them in my hotel room, which I’ll attach if I can.

If by “spread sheet” you don’t mean a big Rubbermaid bin into which one chucks spare parts, I’m afraid can’t help :-)

Here's another Google Sheet option -  https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1ztlxcX0NXo4Z5JaMFvkuiho19UCAiOULwABORlpSLOQ/copy

It's not as much for tracking inventory on my shelves but it's useful to log which bits are on which bike.

Here's how I keep track of wear and what's on my bike now.  Youi'll need to zoom in a lot to see it.  You'll notice I started to keep a list but never finished it.  Thus the original post.

You've got some useful options already but here's the spreadsheet I did up for my Appaloosa build: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1zWzQxG8JKCLovrjOGCLJKXKjwmH8-HA4M0iX2ha9B54/edit?usp=sharing

I haven't replaced any components yet so I'm not sure what I'll do when the time comes. I am logging all my rides through Strava which has the ability to add parts and notes the mileage at the point things are replaced which seems useful.
