I moved to Iowa this year, and am experiencing my first Iowa winter. I never expected to spend this much time on a trainer. I even signed up for Zwift. Why is there a bike path inside a volcano?

Anyway, my Panaracer Paselas have a weird spot where the casing joins that goes thunk-thunk-thunk on the rollers. It's driving me nuts. I don't want to put a trainer tire on the bike. I want to believe that I'm going to go ride outside again sometime before the end of time.

What are the favored 26 inch road-ish tire favorites these days? I have had and disliked Schwalbes. My last set of Marathon Supremes picked up an ungodly array of laceration-inducing, afternoon-ruining, sharp objects. I was quite pleased with the Panaracers until I started riding inside. My downstairs neighbors are probably unhappy with the thunk-thunk-thunk, too. It definitely scares the cat. I'm on an MUSA Atlantis and could go up to about 40mm with my fender setup. Ideas?

Contact your bike shop they can get tires made to use on a trainer. Save your good tires for the road

If you think Marathon Supremes are prone to flats, just wait until you get some Rene Herse tires!

What about some nice Continentals? I have always had good luck with their tires:

I have the Rene Herse Humptulips Ridge (is that how you spell it??) on my Bstone MB-2 and really like them! They are the quietest knobbies I’ve ever ridden on pavement.

I really like the Continental Contact Speed. They're a little hard to find but available on ebay and amazon.

Strong second for the Continental Contact Speed. Perfect combo of speed, comfort, and durability. They're worth double what they sell for.

Been very pleased with the Panaracer Gavel King SK I bought a while ago. Been on a couple of builds. I currently have them on
a fixed wheel MTB I built in the summer. They were a bit scary in mud when riding a geared bike, but they are much better on the fixie.

I also liked the Maxxis DTH as a reasonably priced skinwall commuter tyre. 2,3" is a bit wide for an old MTB frame - can't get fenders over there.

Cheers,
Johnny

I think the Panaracer tires are really underrated and overlooked. There seemed to be a consensus that the Parimoto 650B tires were prone to flats but I have not experienced that. I rode a set of them and Rene Herse tires back to back and honestly while I think the RH tires are great they are not double the price nice. I have found the same to be true with the Gravel King series and between the different variants all sizes are covered. So I agree with the other Johnny above me. Look around and there are a lot of good deals out the for the GK tires

I hope they are! I just got the RH Naches Pass (26x1.8) for my 92 XO-1 (they fit, there's ample clearance, actual width might be narrower).
+1 for Panaracer Gravelkings. Shop around and you can find decent deals.

I'm a big fan of Panaracer tires for 26" applications. My favorite all-around is the Pasela in 26 x 1.75, but that width seems to be perpetually hard to find. I also really like the Gravelking and Gravelking SK. Keep in mind these are very different tires. The standard Gravelking is smooth and light and seems to me almost identical to the Pari-Moto. The SK ("Side Knobs") is more robust and while the center rolls pretty smooth, the side knobs really do help in off-pavement applications. But as pointed out, it's NOT a good mud tire. Excellent dry gravel tire though.

I'd like to hear more about 26" Gravel Kings. I've read many reports about the fast-rolling, smooth ride of Gravel Kings for 700C wheels, but only on this thread have I heard about the 26" model.

Is the 26" (559 bsd) Gravel King non-SK a fast-rolling tire compared to, say, RH 26" tires? I'd be interested in the 1.1" and 1.8" models, nothing fatter (fatter won't fit on the 2 frames I have).

If you have used 26" Gravel Kings in 1.1 or 1.8" sizes, especially if you can compare them to RH tires, EL or regular, please do tell us your impressions.

Paselas: I commuted on 1.25 mm 559 Paselas (non-Tourguard) for several years and found that they rolled well but were fragile, particularly the sidewalls; they were very susceptible to goathead flats (more so than lighter 23 mm 26" tires: Specialized Turbo, Conti GP, and Mich Pro Race), and had a very fine pressure sweet spot between harsh and wallowy. Lynn stated his or her dislike of Kojaks, but I switched to 1.35 mm Kojaks from those Paselas, and I found that they rolled as or almost as well and certainly resisted flats better and lasted much longer. (All of this long before modern sealants, which simply changed the world; now you can ride the lightest tires in thorn country by using sealants in tubes or in tubeless setups.)

IME, oh yes indeed. If the principal reason for riding is fun, as it
is for me, the superb rolling and cushioning qualities of RH EL tires,
even those only 28 mm wide, are worth even more than $150 a pair.
Others' priorities may differ.

There are no better reasons :)

I went to the LBS and they are ordering in some RH tires. It’s only three blocks to the shop, but I have some mobility problems and rode instead of (painfully) walking. It was 10 degree today so that was a bit of an adventure. It was so very nice to get outside and feel the bike come alive. And that concludes my ride report.

Third for the Contact Speed.  32mm.  They  also come in 650B.  If you can find them, Conti also makes the Grand Prix in 25mm in 26" size.

I love Rene Herse tires and have them on two of my three bikes but hesitate recommending them blindly. I've never flatted on one but have seen(and heard) of a lot of people flatting constantly on them. Jan likes drilling that they're good for everything and that you'll leave roadies in the dust while being comfortable but they're still a tire that requires riding diligence. That said, I don't think they're the smartest choice for a commuting tire in most places. I second whoever saying that if you thought the Schwalbes were bad at picking up cuts to avoid the RH tires.

I won't pile on, but Compass tires are boutique cycling at its best!  In other words, I can't afford them (I ride too much).  And, then, one blew out at the sidewall on a 40 mile descent.  No reason; just an apparently 'flawed' sidewall (and, of course, a very thin sidewall in order to achieve that lovely suppleness).  If I want supple fast tires, I will got back to sew-ups.  At 61, crashes at 40 mph result in rather long recovery times.  My Compass  blow-out is probably an outlier, and not to be used to slander Compass quality, etc.  Still, you can have light, you can have strong, but can you really have both in the same tire?

I hope you enjoy the tires! I’ve got three bikes with RH (or Compass) tires, some for years. I have two sets in the shed for another bike, and to swap out knobbies for slicks. I enjoy the ride of those tires, and I haven’t had bad flatting issues. My last set of flats were pinch flats, including a rim dent, so I don’t blame the tires. I blame rainstorms washing the dirt off the trails, exposing many many large sharp rocks. And I will take that over drought any season.

I have periodic gout flare ups that destroy me for walking, but I can still ride without pain. I hope your issues aren’t that!

No experience in the 26” sizes, but I have run the endurance casing of the RH Juniper Ridge and Fleecer Ridge on some serious tire eating terrain and have never had another tire be as durable. I destroy a Maxxis tire almost every ride it seems (only a slight exaggeration) but the RH endurance have been amazing. Just my experience. If only they made a 2.6…
Enjoy the ride!
