Long, long, long shot, but who knows. I’ve gotten some rare-indeed finds on list from a mere inquiry.

There has been only 1 shifter listed on eBay for a while now and the seller does not respond to questions even after repeated attempts.

So, forlorn hope, if anyone here in listland has one in good condition for sale, please contact me.

Thanks, Patrick

PS: If anyone has ideas about converting a bar end shifter to the cable pull needed for the ASC, I’d be delighted to hear about that, too.

I did. He had no more but put me in touch with someone else who had sold his collection to a third person, whom I also contacted but that person after a preliminary reply never replied again.

I’ve shifted the S3X with a friction shifter but I’d much rather have a strong detent to hold the shifter in proper place for second and first gears.

Last time you asked, I told you about Bob Knight in Aotearoa (aka New Zealand) who makes them.  Did you try contacting him?  I'd rather have one of his than a possibly worn out original.

The process for making a bar-end shifter work is to install it on the bike, and then use it.  No mods needed.  It does require you to find the gear by feel, and there's a risk that you will miss the sweet spot of engagement inside the hub, which can lead to increased wear, or even breaking something.  But some people report doing it for years with no problem.  They say you can feel when it's in gear.  I'm not one of those people — never tried it myself.

Thanks again for all the suggestions which despite my assumed indifference have been percolating slowly in my mind.

Latest thought, if I can’t find a good conditions OEM trigger shifter, is indeed to use an S3X bar end shifter, but only if I can find a rare spring-loaded indicator/shift chain, which SA made. This would work like this:

The 3rd to 2nd shift calls for about 7.8mm of cable travel; 9.2 mm of travel is just 1.5 mm more, and the ASC OEM shifter keeps the cable rather tighter than it need be when relaxed in 3rd; 3rd with the ASC means a tighter cable than the loose cable with 3rd with the AW, for example. So the S3X shifter ought to be fine for this shift.

The 2nd to 1st shift requires about 6.6-6.8 mm, so 2.4-2.6 mm of excess; too much for comfort if you want 2nd in just the right place. An indicator/shift chain with sufficiently but not too strong a spring ought to handle 2-3 mm just fine.

The spring loaded shifter/indicator chains were made for some special purpose but apparently come up now and again on ebay; have feeler out on the IGH list.

Thanks, and that would work very well if my hubs used the lever like Shimano IGH 3 sp hubs.

But how would you attached the spring to the indicator/shift chain?

It’s beginning to dawn on me: remove rivet from end of screw-in adjuster rode and leave anothr open rivet hole in chain link; fasten both with spring after adjusting cable length appropriately … this what you have in mind?

I do have a little bin of small springs. Will try this, once I find a S3X shifter — sold mine with last hub.

WTB/ISO S3X bar end shifter.

Thanks!

You don't need a SA spring, you can use one from the hardware store or your junk box.  It needs to have a spring rate somewhere within a wide range of acceptable rates.  Pull on the spring with both hands and see if it feels somewhere in the range of the tension in a shifter.

It just needs to be a little stronger than the internal spring in the hub.

Here's the type of spring Mark Stonich uses for the left-side cable on an S-5, but the same spring should work for you.

If your spring doesn't have the bent ends that make a loop for a bolt to go through, you can simply make your own by bending the last loop of the spring at each end, with pliers.

Some of the SA “indicator chains with overload” are still available on eBay and I bought 2; glad to let SA gauge the proper spring strength. Now I just need an S3X shifter; none currently on eBay. I might be able to cobble the thumbshifter to work, but it would be messy.

Does anyone have a S3X bar end shifter? I sold my remaining S3X hub with that shifter last year.
