Hi,
Would anyone have advice on how to install a front fender on a Cheviot with side pull brakes and has a Mark's rack installed? Is Sheldon's fender nut the way to go? If not, what is the best method for secure set up? I've got some Nord lock washers.

I'd go with a Sheldon nut for ease of install, but a daruma under the fork crown would be another option. Darumas come in different lengths, so you'd need to do a little measuring to get the right one.

Do you already have the fender you'll be installing? And do you plan on ever taking the fender off for dry weather?

For a front fender: this may not work for a 1” steerer, but it worked well for a 1.25” steerer and I’ll throw it out just in case it might for for the narrower one, too.

I pounded a star nut for a threadless headset into the 1.25” steerer of my Monoocg (concave side facing the crown) using a long bolt that also served to adjust it straight. I pushed it just far enough to clear the bottom of the steerer and leave room for a thick leather or rubber washer between it and the top of the fender. This allowed a very secure installation even of a plastic “motocross” fender without struts.

Someone with patience and skill might be able to do this in a steerer 1/8” narrower. I’ll be interested to hear of the results if someone tries this.

I use the Sheldon nuts but I like Patrick's solution a lot - wish I had thought of it.  Star nuts for 1" steerers are out there - I found this one on ebay for $3:  https://www.ebay.com/p/1700121154?iid=123699312406
