This is one rich country-to-poor country help project that actually makes sense.* The original Buffalo bicycle was a coaster braked singe speed with front drum, and this one has a SRAM-designed kickback 2-speed system involving 2 chains, 2 rings, and a 2-cog freewheel.

I’m curious why this setup is more reliable — it’s not more simple, with double everything in the drivetrain — compared to a kickback coaster brake hub, esp if you could beef up the internals.

Or a retrodirect …? Seriously, would a beefed-up coaster braked kickback not be just as reliable?

* The Scandinavians with double-barreled charity programs were big in Kenya when I was a high school student there in the late ‘60s and early ‘70s, and I went to school with many Danes and Norwegians and Swedes. I fondly remember Inger Vedel and her sister Karen (little brother Lars? Didn’t pay as much attention to him.)

I endowed thy purposes with words that made them known.

Patrick,
I go to Kenya all the time. Most people these days are buying very cheap Chinese motorcycles for transportation rather than bikes. Which high school did you go to? Cycling has, however, become a leisure activity amongst Kenya’s newer middle classes and it is very common to see pelotons all over the country and around Nairobi on the weekends, everyone decked out in spandex glory.
Best,
