I need a rain coat. Here in Des Moines, IA, climate change is filling basements with stormwater and I'm bad at remembering umbrellas. I loved the RBW rain coats but didn't have resources at the right time. Does anyone have one they have tired of? Medium is most likely if--like all things Riv--the coat was cut to be generous and roomy. Large is safest option. I worry an XL would look like a potato sack in a way that wouldn't please me. I have an XL MUSA chambray work shirt and it's excellent, but overly sack-like. I use it for working.

Its funny you just posted this.........I'm in Northern Illinois and with the rain being daily and hard I was just shopping for a rain cape for commuting.  I was going to post a question here regarding that in a moment (perhaps I just did, not to highjack your thread Mathew).

If you don't find one used, consider Hilltrek in Scotland. Their double ventile or cotton analogy are both excellent and waterproof. I can't remember if Riv's offering was double, single, or a blend (double shoulder and arm?). Whatever it was, Hilltrek has a parallel. I love their cotton analogy (single ventile with an inner liner than mim ics the natural wicking of vapor and liquid out. Their lineup is a bit confusing at first, their workmanship is excellent and everything we've gotten from them is lasting beautifully under significant use. https://hilltrek.co.uk/

With abandon,

I snapped up a Hiltrek Ventile for our friend from a lister. Providing shelter like  "my own tent" during foul weather riding.

Hi Deacon Patrick,

Which specific model of Hilltrek have you tried for your cycling activities?
Would you recommend their waterproof trousers (pants)?

Dear Matthew,

I will enthusiastically second Hilltrek, either their greenspot jacket (size up if you have long arms) or their "braemar hybrid smock", which is a half-zip hooded jacket with a double-ventile upper half.

I have had four Hilltrek jackets. I am too sweaty/run too hot for Analogy pump liners (I have one, and it sees little use as a result).

The double-layer greenspot was a fantastic jacket, though the pocketing was not ideal for winter use, and it is cut a bit trimly for off-bike use. Sizing up fixed the problem, and gave me an opportunity to get my little brother a nice jacket (he is both younger and smaller, and the medium fit him well). I managed to let mine get stolen. Oddly, my brother lost his too, leaving it behind in a cafe....

I have a single-layer Braemar windshirt that does almost exactly what I want—breathes well, wide comfort range, sheds short, intense thunderstorms, lots of pockets.. About four times a year I get caught in an extended steady rain and the single-layer shoulders wet out. Hence the "hybrid" recommendation.

They are brutally expensive, and worth it. Sewn in Scotland.

Best Regards,

Will

I can vouch for Hilltrek quality through and through. After learning about them right here, and through recommendations from Deacon and others, I finally bit the bullet last year and ordered my first - a 2x Ventile Greenspot jacket. The quality is exceptional (fabric, sewing, etc.) but I should have sized up, as recommended here. The sleeves are a tad short when I'm stretched out on the bike. Also, I find the "handwarmer" pockets could be improved by angling them to be more ergonomic.

True, the jacket is heavier than some, but for winter riding, that's a good thing, in my opinion. Excellent details, high collar, great hood, etc.

Moral of the story: although I sized "correctly", when corresponding with them i should have mentioned my riding position.

  Alternatively, consider a rain cape.

Easy to carry in the sack when it doesn't rain, reasonably comfortable when it does rain.

Thanks for the pointer! Just ordered myself one of the options and will try to remember to review. :)

For those with the double ventile greenspot, do reserve that for colder weather? I generally like to layer under my jacket and use a thinner jacket. I almost worry the single greenspot will be too heavy for me, but I guess I have thinner jacket for warmer weather.

I have a ventile dress raincoat so I am somewhat familiar with it.

Thanks

Eric,
I just received my DV Greenspot a couple of months ago and it is heavier than my previous rain jacket. I'd probably not use it in warm weather but it is great for anything cool/cold. It is bulkier too so it's not the kind of thing I'd just throw in my bag if it is not supposed to rain.  FWIW, I ordered a medium and am 6'/150#. It fits great with lots of room for layering, but I did have the sleeves made longer than the stock size and they are perfect.  The construction and quality overall is impeccable.

I got the Double Ventile Greenspot (based on recommendations from the list) last year and have come to realize a few things:

1. The quality of stitching, zippers, fabric is superb
2. The jacket is indeed fairly heavy and hot. I would not recommend it for cycling in warmer temperatures. When I use it, I have a thin layer underneath and it’s fine.
3. Although I measured to their specs, I ordered a size medium, standard length sleeves. When riding, the sleeves are 2” too short for my liking. Should have ordered longer sleeves. I would be very careful in taking to them before ordering in the future to determine what type of riding you aim to do. For example, I am stretched out when I ride. I ride drops. If I were sitting upright, the sleeve length would work better.
4. I have their single venture gilet, and it is pretty good for water protection, and lighter by a fair bit. If I were getting a Greenspot in the future for commuting or short rides, I might get a single ventile instead.
