Hi all,
after missing the boat on tall Riv frames more times than I can count (usually lost at the intersection of availablity x funds-ability), I snared a big Homer frame last spring, got it built out by early summer, and just happened to be thinking about it while I peruse th FS parts and whatnot.
Here is a shot on a nice morning in the Great Suisun Marsh. Fairly standard build: Billie Bars, Gravel Kings, Alex 36-spoke rims on a front Shimano hub and rear VO hub (built up by Ben's/Milwaukee),Tektro brakes, Shimano 1x10 Deore drivetrain, Velo Orange single ring cranks, MKS "Pretzel" pedals, giant OG Sackville bag on Nitto rack, Brooks saddle. It's pretty awesome and a great departure from my beastly XXL Surly Ogre.

Looks great!  Any opinions about the VO rear hub?  I plan to put together a new rear wheel for my AHH and there aren't many options for rim brake 135 hubs out there.

I built up a wheelset recently using a riv S!LVER hub in the rear. Definitely noisier than I'm used to w/ Shimano hubs, but nothing too crazy. Would highly recommend.

Sweet Homer! Looks like a fun bike to ride and an awesome place to ride it!

Eric - great looking bike. I'm a sucker for a double top tube.

Kesler & Teague - I've not used the VO hub but agree with Teague that the Silver is good (not loud IMO), white ind MI hubs are my preferred but at a premium price point, Phil Wood is ok, bitex get good reviews at a nice price point but I've never used them. Shimano is also a great choice.

I’m curious to find out what sort of experience (pos or neg) gets Phil Wood hubs an “ok” rating. In my experience with everything from WI to Paul, Campy to King, Phil Wood hubs sit right at the top.

Brian - I'd give a thumb's up for PW hubs as well.  I've had a pair on one of my bikes since the mid-90's and have nothing but good things to say about them.  Now, having said that, I'm referring to a rear 120mm freewheel hub where pretty much only the PW hub with it's heavy duty axle caps keep things going with a warp or break of the axle. I can't speak for subsequent cassette models but I assume they have the same consistent level of quality.

We've gotten way off base from talking about Eric's killer bike, but here we go. I've got 3 Phil rear hubs, so I've got SOME real-life experience. I'm sure someone on here has 8 pairs of 70-year-old Phil hubs that are amazing...BUT...I find it off-putting that they seem to spin the cranks/drivetrain when rolling forward. Most hubs will click through the paws on the hub body, and the bike rolls free with the pedals/cranks in a fixed position. People call it "ghost pedaling" or "chain drag", and it usually becomes less frequent with use (not always in my experience), but I'm not a fan. I've not had one wear out, so for longevity, I'd say they're fine, but personally, if I'm paying a premium, I'd prefer the hub to spin freely when rolling forward.

Thanks for the info - sorry to get this off track.  I'm tempted to reach and get a WI hub.  Was just Cambridge Bicycle and they had a couple there - sure looked nice.  And - back - to Eric's bike, the shop also had a bar similar to that Billie Bar - I think it was from Simworks.  I could definitely see running those on a Homer.

Eric, great looking bike and that looks to be a beautiful place to ride it. I love seeing photos of the big Homers.

Love the bike. My AHH is blue and 56 cm.  I'm located in Martinez and would be interested in getting together for a ride. PM me.

Welllll...., continuing off topic, I just got my old Phil hubs back from a rebuild by Phil. Mine are their original model and would estimate I've had them 45 to 47 years.  Front hub was gritty and dried out, probably more my monkeying around more than anything else. .  Absolutely love them and the rebuild service was great!

They're going back on my 50 year-old Raleigh Comp with new wheels to be built by Rich Lesnik.

I want say that the VO hub is maybe the same as the SIlver hub-it has the similar feature of 130/135 spacing as well. Thanks for the comments!

I have the VO hub and I think it's pretty loud. Not aggressively so, but definitely the loudest of my bikes (mostly Shimano and Surly hubs). I only really notice it when I'm walking the bike though.

The 130 to 135 feature is nice. I had that rear wheel on my Crust Lightning Bolt for about a year, and just swapped the end cap to 135 and re-dished the wheel to move it over to my Hillborne last week.

I have a Dark Gold AHH, for my rear wheel I laced a Velocity Quill rim to a Vesper Onyx Road Hub (135mm), it is not an economical choice, but the dead silent sprag clutch is a dream for those long coasting descents (I've never liked loud buzzing hubs).  Plus the instant engagement of the sprag clutch is superb, although not really a thing for road/country riding, more in line for MTB applications.  I am left-handed, so non-drive side pictures for me.Image (9).jpg
