Grant's latest blagh includes a head badge mockup.

down at the bottom.  It's comparatively simple, artistically, and it's basically a big letter Y.  So, what's it going to be?

A. a re-release of the only Rivendell model to start with a Y: the Yves Gomez?
B. A Rivendell recreation of the Trek Y-foil bikes in the 1990s?
C. A play on the question "Why?" with some new bike that nobody asks for?
D. None of the above

I think it's probably none of the above.  The Yves Gomez had two head badges already, one was a kinda boring "YG", and the other was an amazing clockwork gear headbadge that maybe never actually came on a bike.  So it's probably not A.  B is obviously a joke. C is not likely either.  They'd more likely do a "?" than a letter "Y".

What do you think it'll be?  Wrong answers welcome!

D. BYU has commissioned Riv to design a new model to send missionaries out on. I have a cousin that went there on a rugby scholarship and that's what the big Y reminds me of.
OR
D. Wishbone seatstays or chainstay yoke (both?) are in the mix.

Lol, I'm guessing that it's going to be that kids bike that Grant was talking about a few Blahg's ago.  A "Young Bubbe" maybe?

A 20" BMX Riv might just be what gets me back on the track—after all, that's where my love for bicycles first began.

I hope that Teague is right in from their post in the Susie question thread - that this new model will be a next-generation Hillibike to replace the discontinued Susie and Gus. It would be very interesting to see what direction it would take, maybe something to distinguish it more from the Clem.

But I also suspect Ryan's right and it's a kids bike.  Though that didn't go well the first try I thought?

The got country bikes covered, there was just a single speed, road bikes were just double done. My guess is it would likely be whatever the hilly bike replacement is going to be. But thats just a wild stab in the dark.

I know Grant wants a kid bike but I think thats an odd market to get into even for one run. Its so easy to get a decent kids bike for next to nothing on the used market. Around here you can barely give away bike shop quality kids bikes.

The Rivendell Yak, a bike made for climbing stuff whilst carrying large loads. This fits because as Wikipedia says: “Yaks have shaggy, wooly coats, large lungs, and a muscular system that allows them to breathe rapidly at high altitudes. Both sexes have horns that curve upwards from the sides of their heads.”

Riv riders like shaggy, wooly outerwear. Riv riders have or wish to have that muscular breathing thing at altitude. Riv bikes are not deliberately gender-specific or whatever.

I’m thinking it’s not a “Y”, but a fork in the road. Robert Frost’s “The road not taken” comes to mind. And the poem is set in wooded area, so… the hillibike that Blue Lug was referencing towards the end of their latest Rivendell video on YouTube to replace the discontinued Susie/Gus is my answer.

Does the head badge offer any clues? The vowels have all been omitted from RBW (i, e, e, i, e & o). Is it a riddle? Does the badge depict the letter 'Y' or is it an arrowhead plunging into a chalice? Will it be the perfect complement to my Platypus? I've been thinking my next Riv should be a trail oriented build, something that will accept at least 2.5" knobbies. Steve in AVL

I have been looking at Klunker bikes lately because a guy at work has one. I had to look up the definition of a Klunker and it's not clear. I think they are single speed with pedal brakes, maybe, and wide tires. The ones I've seen have a similar frame shape. Could we see a Rivendell Klunker in 2025? If you have more insight on what makes a Klunker a Klunker I would be interested.

Hey Doug,

Klunkers were the original mountain bikes and were cobbled together from older Schwinn newsboy bicycles (or some such). There's a fine film over on The Radavist called Camera Corner which sheds more light on this.

I also think it's going to be a new hillibike and I reckon it'll get the 90 degree lugs that they developed for CHG. Straight TT = easier/cheaper to braze.

Thank you for the link. I've watched about half of it and it is fascinating. I had read much of that history but seeing the photos by Wende Cragg and interviews with the mountain biking founding fathers is pure gold.

Bryce - ahh that's a good point, now that you say it, it seems only logical that the next generation of Hillibike will use these lugs and a straight top tube that's thicker gauge than the CHG.  Should not only improve the cost / fab time, but stiffen up the frame a bit too I'd expect.  I kinda hope that this head badge is for the kids' bike and the next gen Hillibike will soon follow though because this headbadge isn't very elegant to my eyes

I have to agree with Jason about this new headbadge. It doesn't quite seem as cool, quirky, or fussed-over as nearly all of the other headbadges in the compendium of Rivendell. I would rank it down there with the Gus badge, and the Betty Foy (sorry folks, I own a Gus and unfortunately can't say it's one of the cooler ones).

I wonder how many people buy or don't-buy Rivendells based purely on their love or hate of a head badge?  I bought two R05C0 8U883 frames based on the rocket head badge being awesome, and limited release Rosco Bubbe's having good re-sale value.  I would absolutely buy a 58cm black Yves Gomez if one came up at the right price, even if it has the lame gold-foil "YG" head badge, because I'm holding the awesome Yves Gomez clockwork head badge.  Of my current Rivendells, I think the Romulus has the lamest head badge, but I love the bike.  I am always amused by the goof-up with my RoadUno headbadge with one section painted cream and another section cut through to reveal the paint of the head tube underneath, which is... #checks notes# ...also cream.  LOL

I would probably have bought a Ro5co 8u883 for the headbadge, too, if one would have been my size.  I'm less enamored with anything Russian these days, but that's just me - not trying to start a political conversation.  Meanwhile, I bought a Susie despite NOT liking the headbadge and graphics.  So even for me, with a design background, function trumps aestehetics.

I do think people might be onto something with speculation about the next hillibike having a straight but lowered top tube.  But that headbadge just screams kid's bike to me.  Maybe "Young Edison" or something.

I did not do a year-end update to the badge poster, and am hoping for something new this year to trigger an update. No comment on the latest preview, other than to say it's trendy to use the letter Y in light of the Yellowstone franchise. (I'm seeing "Y" merch everywhere it seems) I'm sure there is no connection. Here's the last one I did, and a link to the file in Flickr if you want to download something to print.

For anyone other than the old timers, that big badge in the center is the first ever (as I understand) and made of Pewter. Anyone here have a Pewter badged Riv? Agree with Bill on the YG clockwork badge - it's been a favorite of mine too. I have pics of most if not all the variations that have been done over the years. Colors, Materials. Sizes. If I put them all in one poster it would cover a king size bed!

I have an original pewter head badge but it is not on any of my Rivendells.  I could put it on the only Riv I own without a head badge I guess 🤔 (62cm Betty Foy).
However if I could work a trade with Bill Lindsey for his clockwork YG head badge I could do a repaint instead and have my own Riv Mixte.

Regarding what the “Y” stands for I wish it was a youth bike.  Now that Grant has grandkids approaching self biking widow like I do I would grab a limited edition Riv kid bike lickitly split.

Reminds me of a 70’s or 80’s NYC subway token, what with the big center Y.  So I think it is a small wheeled cargo basket bike that lets you roll your dog on the subway.

To me the new badge seems more like a sketch of a badge. It has some potential, but needs work. The Gus badge referenced is not a “pretty” badge but does (I think?) accurately reflect the spirit of the bike. I did not like the badge at first but it has grown on me.

As much as I would like to see a new Hillibike frame design I think this head badge is for a kid's bike. At first glance and Bill's suggestion of a "Y" it's easy to stick with that idea. But by looking at it a second time, I first saw the upside-down "spade" and then the "Y" resembled a slingshot.

I remembered Grant fascination with making thins from wood and how he would write about it in the Rivendell Readers. Well, the #43 Reader shows you how to make a slingshot. (cyclofiend archives).

The "spade" actually could be an Indian arrowhead.

The missing vowels could represent a grade school missing vowel spelling worksheet for K-5.

Who didn't make their own slingshot and search for arrowheads as a kid!

Best head badge is the Hunqapillar because of the trilobites in my opinion.
I have 4 bikes with Rosco Bubbe head badges and all of the Rosco head badges are painted differently (Rosco Bubbe V1, Rosco Bubbe Medium Mountain Mixte, Rosco Baby, and “Keven’s Bike” Mark Nobilette Custom).
I am not a fan of the “Y” head badge.

The more I think about it the more I think it HAS to be the kids bike. Rivendell goes through numerous prototypes and quite a bit of time before releasing a new model. To have one pop up this year without any info getting out there would be odd. Except there has been talk about the kids bike and if I recall correctly there was an early prototype shown off. I don't think that a totally brand new adult bike would have flown under the radar so quickly and quietly.

Gah!  I've been wanting another lift-a-tube bike.  I owned two different Rosco Bubbes with the lift-a-tube and really liked it.  I should sell four bikes and then get a YelloWolleY.

Even the 'blue' part is kind of accurate. If you look at the pictures of "Yellowbike" in Grant's Blahg you can see that the plan is to paint the infill of some of the lugs blue, if it works out financially. Especially the heart in the seatpost lug. 💙 So "Yellowbike will be blue" IS true!
