The Brits among us will recognize the play on words!

I've had my eye out for a Brompton for a while now. I could throw all the practical reasons around, like a bike I could travel with for extended work trips but in all honesty, they're just so darn cool & cute. One popped up on FB Marketplace this week & I managed to negotiate a very good deal. It's been used but has all the signs of decent maintenance and aside from a good clean up, some adjustments & a slight straightening of the bars was ready to ride.

I put about 50 miles on it these past 2 days & just like a Riv, it's a bike that puts a smile on your face! 3 speeds is a little limiting but those tiny wheels come off the line in quick order & it's just darn fun to ride. I've never seen another in Dallas but coincidently I passed one yesterday at the White Rock spillway, he was as surprised as I was!

Philip: May I ask what you paid for it? I'd consider a 3 speed, a 2-speed, or a ss (I did read the posts about Brompton not being designed for a fixed drivetrain; thanks all for that information).

Patrick "so many other expenses jumping the queue to a Brompton purchase" Moore, whose daughter is very expensive (upcoming new apt and semester in Italy), and who would also like a Monocog replacement.

Oh, speaking of expenses: daughter needs a DSLR (digital SLR) minimally good enough for "art projects," which means relatively hi res photos and manual adjustment of shutter speed, aperture, and lighting (did I get those right?). Someone said Costco has good deals. Suggestions? Not asking for donations, just advice. Thanks. Patrick "camera imbecile" Moore

Sorry, couldn’t resist adding a few pics of mine Brommy. I mainly use the Riv, but the Brompton makes a great bike to take on trips by train etc!

Very fun little bike to own!

Look at used cameras from KEH Camera. Any price point you want. Costco used to sell Nikon D3500 kits with two lenses, but I don't see it online right now, so check what KEH has. Canon EOS at any price or resolution you want to pay for. Some instructors will demand a certain number of pixels, but any Nikon or Canon dslr will be serviceable to begin with , and KEH checks them out, warrants them, and will buy them back. Also, can rent fancy stuff at Lensrentals.com

Rick: which basket is that? Aliexpress & typing "brompton + titanium" certainly brings up some lovely items too.

I'm thinking of doing a strip down to raw metal & lacquer over the winter as I love that look.

Cool bike Paul, everyone.

Here is one of mine. Riv philosophy: brooks saddle, thumb shifters, drive side photo with the crank in the ready to go position.

Forgive me that the seat post is a little low, I had just unfolded it to go on a ride. When properly adjusted it is pretty much even with the bars.

Also of note: many Ti parts, some hidden.

Also of note: I converted this Ortlieb office bag to mount onto a Brompton front rack. The rack stays mounted on the bag full time and the whole assembly lifts off when not in use.

Cheers
Jason

That is a Wald 582 folding metal basket, with a Trigo adapter plate modified to fit it to the carrier block. It is not light, but nothing on mine is...

Mine came as the "raw lacquer", but from the factory it is really a paint color and not just raw metal with lacquer over. I am using metal bluing with varnish over as touch up, that is close to the color.

Nice to see all those cute pictures!

Wondering if the Bosco bar would work for a Brompton.

Brompton is in my N+1 list, but Bosco is a must.

Ash,

A Bosco can be done if you can make the reach and folded math work.

The clamp is 25.4 and the mast folds down so the reach-back juts away from the bike. You'd have a bigger folded footprint but still crazy compact relative to storing or transporting a full-size bike.

The ETT is about 60cm with no stem reach. You'd have the reach to the flat part of the bar in the same range as stock Brom bars but the rest is coming WAY back. You'll never sit up any straighter on a bicycle than holding the ends of a Bosco on a Brompton! 😁

I’m only 5’ 11” with an 86 cm PBH. I have one Brompton with a standard seat post and one with the telescoping seat post. The standard post is about perfect for me at full extension. I use maybe an extra inch on the telescoping post. You’d need the telescoping post and likely the H bars as well.

Eric, the sage green Brompton in the picture I included in my earlier post above is equipped with the telescoping seat post.  My PBH is 96cm.  Both bikes have the 'H" style handlebar.

I got loose at Aliexpress today & ordered a titanium seatpost (600mm) since the one I have is pretty gouged in places. That & the little phone holder that mounts on the stem bolt.

My lack of self control will probably have me returning for the titanium rear rack too!

Welcome to Brompton ownership, a black hole you pour money into. It's worse than the racks-and-bags journey we go on for our Rivs! 😂

Eric,

Here's my Brompton in it's natural element -  multi-modal transport.   I'm 6'7" tall and ride 65-68 cm road bikes, and the Brompton with the telescoping seat post and the H bars works well for me.

I picked up the Grateful Red rear LED USB light, it comes with a couple of mounting options, one of which is literally an exact fit for the Brompton rear reflector bracket!

great thread and welcome to the club jason.  mine is similiar to yours when i got it.  be prepared for the tinker bug!  i turned my fender model into a rack one with a rack and new fender.   it makes push cart mode much more stable.
i also added a dyno front wheel and light.

they are useful in a way that is very different from a full size bike.  though riding here in nyc can be a bit hectic with them!

For those of you that like to waste money on Brompton parts, I recommend some Honjo fenders!

Dominic,

Hahaha. These are a high ticket item.

Is your personal bike? Is the clearance any different than with the Brompton plastic ones?

Hi Jason,

It is indeed (although I live in Japan so Honjo products are much cheaper here).

There is a tiny amount more clearance, however it seems there is no way to get a wider tire on the Brompton due to the frame shape (unless anyone here knows otherwise?)

I'd love to see some wider and more interesting tire options for Brompton!

Dom,

Wider tire?  Give me a month for a ride report :)

The largest tire made for 349 rims is the 349X1 1/2. They work out to be about 38-40mm in practice. That fits the fork on all models and the rear frame on many, but not all. Ti models are a little tighter. The real pinch point is the rear brake caliper.

Greenspeed in AUS used to make a model called Scorcher. A little internet searching  will direct you to these tires used on Bromptons, including a blog from a store in Japan from a few years back.

Greenspeed is no longer, but you can still get 60tpi or 120tpi scorchers from a recumbent shop in Australia. They also have their own house brand in the same size called TRUBLU.

Here's mine with a bit of Rivendell content.  I've had it since Christmas 2016.  It has been my primary commuter because the huge Brompton T Bag fit my Wacom 16" MobileStudio Pro, books, lunch and jacket with room to spare.  I used the multisack as a Brompton mini-pannier for a while.  Heel clearance was a bit of an issue but it worked pretty well.
