From searching old threads here and the web archive, it seems like Salukis came in three stock colors.

The Riv page said you could get JB paint for an up charge but then there was mention of a local painter too.

Any idea if this brown Saluki is JB’s work?

There will be a "JB" at the front edge of the left chainstay. Unfortunately it's blocked in this photo.

Max—first & foremost—how can you have too many bikes? Is that possible?

I have a silver Saluki and the decal set is a bit different. I've got the same Saluki script but my set has a couple of additional fancy 'dodads' framing the Saluki script. Maybe that tells us something though I have no idea what that something might be.

BTW, somebody out there knows what the range of Saluki colors were.

Best
Max who continues to be 650b curious, might have bought a Saluki and now has 6 bikes too many.

Saluki brown is an interesting selection. Old Raleigh Pros were also a shade of brown (sable), no others that come to mind. Most Joe Bell treatments have his trademark signature JB on them, no?

Hi Jock,

I don’t have the bike here yet so can’t check the chainstays for the “JB” brand.

As for original colors, the page said: Colors: Two: a Yellowish Olive and Pewter, a fawny silver.

Now, I’ve seen a few orange ones so I imagine that was an option at some point.

Best
Max

Did you buy the bike in the photo used?  And now you can't ask the seller because it is in a box and in-transit to you?  New bike day is always fun, and I hope you find the JB sticker you are hoping for.

Do you want brown to be a stock color?  The whole notion of "stock colors" is a little blurry in Riv-history.  For those made to order frames from Waterford and/or Toyo they would guess at colors to paint them, but they often also would get some that were not painted, with the intent of getting them paint-to-order by D&D locally or JB for those who wanted to pay for it.  So there are lots of individual Rivendell bikes out there in a "non-stock" color even though that is the original color for that particular bike.

What a perfect bike Jock! Not sure why the image didn't load for me earlier.

Bill, I did buy the bike but the seller doesn't remember. He bought from Riv and this is what he had to say when I asked if it's Joe Bell paint: "Actually sounds very familiar but has been a while. He was probably the guy. I like brown. He mixed up a brown with gold flakes. Looks cool in direct sunshine" - This sounds like JB to me.

Regarding stock colors, no brown wasn't stock. Bill is correct - some of these came without paint from Japan. Here is the note from the Riv website: "Price: $1600 for frame, fork, headset and detailed paint job. If you want a JB paint job, that's another $300 (so, $1900)."

I love the detective work of figuring out provenance and details.

Best,
Max

Beautiful bike.  Congratulations.  Every time Rivendell has issued a survey asking about people's favorite colors, THAT'S the color I respond with.  Just perfect.
