In anticipation of the new mermaid Gus I picked up in the presale this week,  I'm thinking through my existing components and wondering if I should lean toward a black or silver build.  I had my orange Susie set up with pretty much all silver everything with yellow and lime green bolts and accents, but am wondering how that will look on the mermaid color. I've been browsing photos on IG, but I'd love to see how folks on the list have set up their mermaid Appaloosas and Platypuses, what bar tape colors you've tried, component colors, etc.

Funny you should ask. Let me show you the green/lime/gold on a mermaid frame. I’ll link in the following post because it’s easier in Gmail….

I forgot, this was the inspiration:

There will be front and rear racks, and I’ll mount the lights on them. Gold headlight, green taillight.

And bags:

I'ma call Analog and say "This is my inspiration. Just find me something in Mermaid and do this. Change nothing!" 😁

That's a stunning bicycle, Leah. Well done! 👏👏👏👏👏

Wow!  I was on IG about five minutes after I posted this and saw the post from Analog.  What a gorgeous build, Leah!  I've been looking at golds, burnt orange, and brown, but hadn't thought about green with that color. I actually have lime green deity pedals on the orange Susie right now and lots of little green bling from my orange bikes.  I'll keep them on hand after seeing this!  Thank you for posting this and congratulations on a beautiful bike.

Wow, that's pretty slick! I love the colored components.

Could you please post the build list?

Hi Matthew!

Yes, certainly. Please give Analog a call and tell them I sent you. They are color wizards  and excellent at executing gorgeous builds:

Well, it’s a long story. I won’t hijack this thread with it here. But yes, another Platy for different purposes. And now I’m really never buying another bike. Ever. I’m set!

was initially disappointed with the mermaid color when i received the bike (nice color, not necessarily my style) but after the black and silver mix (and the touch of cork) i'm a huge fan. black for sure helps, but i'd never do an all black build again, not on a riv at least. pardon the background disaster. i'll clean one day.

Really impressed by Mermaid's versatility with black, silver, or Leahtechnicolor builds!  Each has a totally different personality.

Love the black bits on this build.  I saw the all-black component Platypus build from Crust on the other thread and really liked it.  I think I prefer it this way with some silver thrown in.  Thanks for posting this!

Well...I'd love to hear the story. I'm sure it's a good one and I'm betting I'm not the only one who's curious

OOOH! I like this very much, Eric.  I had been leaning towards a mix of green parts.  So, similar too, but different than Leah's Platy II.  Due to availability though I've found I'm getting more silver and/or polished parts than I hoped.   At minimum I'll have green Paul Love Levers :)

That is a classy build, Eric.  What is the combo of bar tape color and shellac you used to get that result?

Thanks, Wally! I had this built up by Riv and let them choose the mechs, which were scarce at the time. I'd like to replace the rear with a silver one at some point. I've already swapped the black cable hanger for a silver one. They were out of silver when my build came up, nbd.

Erik – Thanks! The shellac, it's a tricky recipe. On the grips there's a layer of wool felt which is wrapped in Newbaum's maroon bar tape. Rivendell coated it with clear shellac. I'm unsure of how many coats. When I got the bike I coated the grip area with one coat of amber shellac. The result is unexpected. It didn't just make the tape brown, as amber shellac usually does. There's something else to it, it's subtle. A deeper maroon. The area in front of the grips is dark gray Newbaum's with clear shellac.

I'm a self-proclaimed bag matcher but what I'm really after is balance and harmony, rather than matching everything precisely.

My Platy pics were posted by me on June 15 in this Long thread. https://groups.google.com/g/rbw-owners-bunch/c/5Qe4GAOJReQ/m/VDaBTF_eBAAJ

Most components on my bike two tone, mostly silver with bit of black. Wheels have more color when not dusty.   I think it’s a classy look on a Platy but you can go bolder on a Gus.   I let Candice at analog pick the scheme. She “gets” my style. I did opt for black wall tires for extra flat protection, if that’s a thing. Looking forward to seeing your new bike. Roberta

Roberta,
What a lovely bicycle for sure! I'm glad I went with the mermaid over the orange for my Gus.  Besides I'd get questioned with "You have an orange bike already (the Quickbeam)!"

Th reality is that the Mermaid is such a lovely color but so neutral almost anything will go well with it.

It's a really interesting color and has me thinking about eggplant as a base, too.  I'm fortunate to be able to teach painting and drawing for a living so I'm always curious about how colors are generated and what materials and color combinations can be used to produce unlikely results.  I've been experimenting with shellac colored with shellac-based inks over various bar tape colors but I haven't ended up with a result that looks like this yet!  Thanks for explaining the formula!
