This is the 51 SH frame from the 718 Cyclery sale I received about a month ago. Built it up from scratch. Notable parts include the CrustxNitto stem, Shaka Bars, Hite-Rite, and the gold LX hubs. Fork is just barely clearing the GravelKing 1.9's.

I hope you love the bike to pieces!  I got a Riv a few years ago and couldn't believe what I was missing.  I hope you love yours the same.

Thanks Roberta! I have yet to put any serious miles(only to work and back) but so far it rides wonderfully. Excited for some country road riding.

That wee beastie is eager to head down anything you aim it! I was astonished with my first Rivendell how much delight comes from the bike yearning to go anywhere I point it. Enjoy, with wild abandon!

With abandon,
Patrick

Nice! I have fond memories of the first edition Sam Hill I briefly (=/< 1 year) owned; it certainly could not take 2" tires, but the current model -- I might well have kept it. Wish -- academically, since I'm now well supplied -- that they'd design the frame for full 50s and fenders. Or at least full 50s.

I agree 100%. I probably wouldn’t have purchased if this particular color didn’t pop up at a great deal.

Great looking. I had a caliper Sam, sold it and bought a MUSA Atlantis right before canti sams were reintroduced. If I had known, I would’ve gone for that. Here we are and I love my Atlantis , but a canti Sam still gets my heart going.

Welcome!  You've got an awesome Sam there...big tires to boot :)  I've never seen the Crust Shaka bar mounted.  With the flyout angle, it looks like it slots in between the Salsa Cowbell and Cowchipper.

I also started my Riv journey with a Sam, which my wife stole upon her first ride (she's tall, long femurs, and had never (NEVER) found a bike that fit her like a glove like that Sam did - and still does.  So I got another Sam for me, but ended up selling it because it was really too small, and I also had a 61 Roadini, which was an overlap situation; I could've made it work, but it would not have looked like I wanted it to.  But I really missed that burnt orange color.  Riv put the remaining sidepull Sams on sale, so now I have a 62, and love it.

Good luck - they're super bikes, as I'm sure you've discovered by now.

Awesome looking bike!  I too bought my first Rivendell recently, a 51 Sam as well, only a month before you. I have hopes of riding it for decades, bucking my previous habit of switching things up every 3 years or so. I've only put about 250 km on mine so far, but it's already really impressed me in terms of the fun / comfort / versatility combination!

Yea! I saw yours Jason. There is some obvious overlap in our setups and I was scoping yours out in the month leading up to building mine. I just need to figure out the crankset situation as I would prefer a wide range double. I could buy VBC rings in the preferred format but that would be as much as a new crankset so I have yet to decide. Should get it on a longer ride this weekend and will report back with photos and updates.

Very nice! I too just built my first Riv after a decade of dreaming of the Hillborne. Took it out for my first long-ish ride on a surprisingly mild day today and LOVE it. I can't believe I waited this long.

Both of these Sams look stellar. Nice work ya'll!

I've had a Sage Green 51 Sam for four years and have changed very little on it since day one. It's a keeper. Hope you both enjoy yours.

Best,
Rich in ATL

I always thought the tuxedo Sam was exceptionally sharp.  You did a great job of building it up.

I have to say that the black Sams are very attractive, even though I associate black with barrel-bottom Indian-made clones of Raleigh rod brake roadsters. With the black fenders the effect is attractive without being overwhelmingly dark thanks to the cream accents.

I'm not sure that, if I were to buy another Sam, I wouldn't even so choose the green, but the black + cream is very nice.

Kudos!

Mid ride up and over Prefumo Canyon in SLO. Got to shred some dirt roads. It was a joyous occasion.

What I like about the black Sams is how you can make any contrasting color pop with them, like the green bar tape and purple brakes on the ones posted here. So cool!
