Bicycle Belle Ding Ding!

I’m planning my fall riding clothing now. Summer is easy; I have tons of summer options for clothing. But fall is more difficult, and specifically, pants. Rivendell is offering these “cycling baggies” and I did order a pair. I’m sure they are dead useful, but I don’t think they will be darling on me, and I do like to be darling. Here they are:

So, I was looking around online and stumbled upon these, from Patagonia!
https://www.patagonia.com/product/womens-outdoor-everyday-cargo-pants/22030.html?dwvar_22030_color=DRBN

I think they will look really good for what they are. I only hesitate because I dislike the idea of wearing clothing made from fishing nets. But they do say no intentional PFAS and they get good reviews. And the Riv pants are also nylon, so…

Anyway, leaving this here for my RivSisters who find themselves in the same conundrum. pants that are cute but easy to cycle in are RARE, and if you find them, they are also expensive. In the past, I’ve ordered Topo Designs dirt pants, and while good and good looking, they do have seams that can be problematic on longer rides. But these look promising!

Chime in if you’ve had a pair!

Hey Leah.

I tend to like all things fjallraven myself.
They are making a new line of functional cycling clothing under their line called hoja.
Looks like they are offering a trouser now as well.
I love the shorts because the back side is stretch and the front is a nylon material. The seams are truthfully placed as well.
If the trouser functions as the shorts do they might be worth considering.

My wife (Lori) and I both endorse Fjallraven shorts AND trousers for cycle touring.  In preparation for a 2,500 mile trip in South America in 2023, we took a chance and purchased Specialized / Fjallraven (S / F) shorts and trousers.  Specialized and Fjallraven formed a partnership and, at that time, they were 50% discounted at Specialized' website.  I don't think you can purchase the S/F models anymore as the partnership ended and most of the inventory sold.  But the model to look at is the Hoja Hybrid line.  We both have used their shorts and trousers over long distance trips.  In fact we are on one as I speak (with the Fjallraven clothing).

Pros: DURABLE!  1000's of miles and the stitching is still intact.  The color fades, but oh well.  Gusseted crotches for cycling comfort with stretchy material.  Tapered legs (on rhe trousers) so the material on the right doesn't get caught in the chainrings.  Zippered pockets for excellent security (4 pockets on trousers).  The G-1000 fabric is sonewhat water resistant but can be made mire water repellent by using Fjallraven's wax.  The trouser cuffs can be folded up revealing retro reflective striping for night riding/walking.  I also think one can wear them from the bike to a nice restaurant, they are that clean and understated.

Cons: Price. Yes the MSRP is steep but I've owned some MUSA shorts (purchased 2017) which didn't last me very long (over a 2,600 mile tour of the GDMBR).  The stitching came loose, making for a disappointing experience.  So far rhe shorts and trousers have met or exceeded our expectation for durability.

Good luck,

Jeff & Lori

Leah,

You may want to look at running pants. They seem to be a good stand in for cycling specific bottoms. In a lot of cases their is a bit of water resistance, some reflective elements and are breathable. They also tend to be light in material so as not to be too bulky. A jogger style training pant or even a soccer pant would work. since it would give a taper that would help keep the pant leg from getting snagged.

I work part time at for an athletic shoe and apparel store company with extensive exposure to women's apparel. Your results may vary.

Thanks,

Reginald Alexis
