Hi,

Today, I changed the rear brake cable on my Rivendell to full-length cable housing. I have to carry my bike up many flights of stairs to get into my apartment, and I was tired of grabbing the top tube and scratching the inner cable to the paint. Granted, full length cable housing doesn't look that great, aesthetically, but form follows function, at least today.

I used little clip-on adaptors from ScAmazon, appropriately labeled "RISK". They bolt to the existing cable stops with 2mm allen bolts. They were originally intended to run hydraulic housing.

Then I used new stainless Sim-Works cables. Wow, the cable inners are smooth.

I also noticed my back brake hanger had worn a little. I might reinforce it with a longer bolt or just replace it. It is from Nitto. Has anyone seen this before? The brake cables were not so easy to adjust. It's always guesswork and then - oooh just right.

Next, I'll either wrap part of the top-tube with Rivendell's style of twine - or maybe go back to what I already had.

What do you think? Has anyone done something similar with their bike? Here are some pictures.

Michael

Another option would have been to sleeve the exposed brake cable with some 1mm ID tubing.  Although this suggestion come a bit too late give the time and expense already invested in the project.

I don't know if this will work with your Apaloosa, but I very often carry a bike by grasping the seat tube below the bottle cage, and holding the bike at shoulder height, elbow bent, weight borne by hand at shoulder, with front wheel down. The handlebars do interfere with legs a bit, but not badly.

Otherwise, I agree with David that tubing over the cable is a good solution. Or simply slip a cloth between cable and top tube while you're carrying the bike. I carry a back-pocket bandana when riding for all sorts of frequent and occasional uses, facial, respiratory, COVID, cleanup, and portage.
