Hi all!
Any bike rack you'd recommend for Clem Smith L 45 cm and future Platy 50 cm for husband? Kuat or? Model? Thanks for any help!

For like a car? If so 1UP will be my whole hearted recommendation. Best product I ever bought and works great for long wheelbases.

Highly recommend the Kuat NV2 or 1UP as previously recommended. I have the NV2 and it’s the best rack I’ve ever owned. Can easily carry any bike I have. The only one that pushes the limits a bit is my Gus, I wouldn’t want to try anything longer. The only reason I didn’t get the 1UP was due to availability at the time.

Thanks, Ted! I just checked our local bike shop and, while they don't have 1UP, they can bring a Kuat NV2 down the grade from their warehouse in a couple days for us to try. Very excited to expand our biking radius, albeit (partially) by auto! Now, if I can only locate a Jakob Ingebrigtsen running cap for my son's birthday, I'll be 2 for 2 today, ha.

Appreciate this group!!

I share Ted’s praise of the Küat NV2.0. Mine has been one of the best bike investments I’ve made. It fits my 50” wheelbase medium Gus no problem, although it pushes it to its absolute maxium. When they say 50” is the max. wheelbase, they mean it.

1Up makes a very fine rack, but if your bike has fenders, or if you think you’ll want to carry a friend’s bike who has fenders, you may want to consider the Küat over the 1Up. Reason being, the Küat swing arm will still securely hold the front wheel as long as you get it as close to the front edge of the fender as possible. Unlike the 1Up, there’s no rear swing arm on the Küat to clamp down on (and potentially deform) your rear fender. My Küat has carried multiple fendered bikes thousands of miles on long road trips with no issues whatsoever.

Hi Brian,

Great info, especially re: the fenders! I have fenders on my Clem and just ordered some for my husband's incoming Platypus.

Thanks much!

The Hollywood bike carrier accomodates wider tires, longer wheelbases and fenders.  Fairly low price. well made.  I have been pleased with it for the 2 years I have been using it.

1UP does sell Fender Cushions as an accessory to add on.

IMHO the Kuat Sherpa. Had other racks, but this is my favorite. The Sherpa is light, therefore easy to mount. But I would use an additional cable lock.

I use 1UP but needing accessories like the EZ pull handle kind of irks me. If I could do it again I would just get the Rocky Mounts GuideRail (https://rockymounts.com/products/guiderail-2.html)

Comes with a handle already and a chain lock.

Thanks very much! I looked up Hollywood bike carriers and they seem great, too. Our local shop is closed today but website indicates they may have these in the warehouse...Hope to see one and compare.

+1 on the Hollywood Sport Rider as a good, low cost tray-style hitch rack for fendered bikes and swoopy frames. The 2 bike option is pretty light as well so easy to wrangle on and off the car. Swagman makes a similar rack, the XTC. I own both: Sport Rider for 2 bikes, XTC for 4 bikes. Ironically, I buy my racks right around Black Friday since I find great deals on them this time of year.

Another vote for the 1UP. Their "wheel stop" accessory/add-on holds my fendered bike very well (https://1up-usa.com/product/wheel-stop). You can also adjust the arms to mount bikes with smaller wheels. (As small as 16").

Super similar to 1Up racks are the ones made by QuikrStuff, licensing design by the creator of the 1Up rack design:

Looks like he refined the design in at least a few nice ways. They're backordered with lead time estimated at 2 months, according to their website.

Hi Omar and Chester,

Thanks so much for further info! I like that wheel stop thingy... very useful I bet. And that quikrstuff rack video was interesting; I especially liked how you can just fold the rack up and stuff it in the back of a small SUV. I can see why there's a 2-month wait on those.

We're going to the local shop Saturday to preview the Kuat and any others they have...probably too impatient to wait another couple months.

I'd really like to head up the coast and ride the 17-Mile-Drive ... haven't done it since I had my old Stella in college:) But I understand the traffic is worse now...maybe early in AM would work!

I have a Kuat and do yourself a favor and stay VERY clear of them. It fell apart and my bike almost fell off on the freeway.

Jacob, as a Kuat owner, I'm very curious as to what exactly happened with your rack? Which model do you have? What part failed when you say it "fell apart"?

Oh my hosh! That's horrible! Do you mind me asking which model? Maybe that 2 month waiting list wouldn't be too far iff...😀Thanks for the good info!!

Jacob,  Hopefully no harm to bike or others.

I had a Kuat beta and for a hanging bike rack, I though it was terrific.  I now have a Saris Freedom (tray) and like it even better.  The part that touches the frame has flexible channels for the wires to sit in, so very little actually touches the frame. Reasonable price too.

All my bikes have fenders.

Rack shopping for Rivendells is my least favorite. There are so many things I need a rack to work around for my Rivendells. Long WB, fenders, step-thru… I have the 52 Clem (if memory serves, the WB is 52”) and the 55 Platypus, which is like 47.25in WB. I have the Saris Freedom 4 bike rack, but the only way to make it work for my long bikes was to purchase the long wheelbase bar, which no longer is made by the company. What does that mean?! Is mine still safe?!

I’ve been looking at the Kuat racks but they neglect to show photos of how the bikes sit in the NV2 if using the wheel trays - yes, I see the trays but what is the mechanism holding the frame? Hollywood makes a simple and affordable rack (Trail Rider) that *should* work for you provided that the bar can get low enough on the Clem top tube while the wheel trays are wide enough apart to accommodate the bike’s length.  The Hollywood rack is inexpensive and easy and will work for your WBs but if you plan to just leave it on the vehicle, it’s annoying. The Saris Freedom folds up so it’s not in my rear window’s line of sight all the time. Which is important, since I leave the rack on the van from March-November.

I think working with a shop that sells these racks is a good idea. Let us know what you settle on!

First Time on the Rack 1.jpg
Sunset into the Pacific 1.jpg
Thanks so much for all the great advice and for sharing your experiences re: the car racks! Yesterday afternoon we spent some time in our local shop and ended up getting that Kuat NV 2.0, 2-Bike Hitch Rack. (Though one of the mechanics had a 1UP himself and recommended it, too.) They installed it and we tried it out today on Hwy. 1 (and on our neighborhood potholes!). It seems very solid and the bike didn't budge...and the combined weight of bike and rack didn't sink the Subaru either...so all good so far:) When we get my husband's Platypus (50 cm) we'll see how it does with both bikes. Here's a photo of the first time on the rack for Clem and of sunset into the Pacific tonight. Cheers!

Super-size the question: My Clem L is a 59; looking/considering a Clem L 64 for my HE (husband equivalent). How in the world do we transport these behemoths? The idea is for some off-road, away-from-home adventures, but the whole rack thing needs to be managed. We could remove wheels for transport, but then need a rack that will take the 'L' Clems and grab the frames.

Thank you for your collective wisdom!

Kiley, I think the best answer for those who have long wheelbase issues, is to get a rear rack with the dual rack arms that adjust to secure both wheels of the bike (like the design of 1Up racks, or the Kuat Piston series). The wheelbase limitations of the Kuat Piston series is 53 inches, and I think most 1Up racks will handle a max. of 54 inches. Personally, I have a Kuat NV2, but it only has an adjustable rack arm for the front wheel, and a strap for the rear wheel. The max wheelbase on that style of rack is 50 inches. My 54 (Medium) Gus has an exactly 50" wheelbase, so it JUST fits. Anything longer would not.

I guess ease of personal transport and urban multi-modal transportation was not a factor in the evolution of these bikes. They ride great, but it's a very real and often frustrating issue that us owners have to work through.

Kiley, I’ve got a 64 Clem L rolling chassis (embarrassingly not yet built up) and a 1UP rack which I’ve (embarrassingly) not yet tried it on. If you haven’t gotten a definitive answer before then, I’ll throw it on and take some photos when we’re back from our vacation on Thursday.

I can confirm that a 59 Clem L fits just fine on a 1up, as I transport mine that way regularly.
