From the many suggestions from this group I’ll try my first gravel ride. I purchased Rene Hearse Pumpkin Ridge tires and will have plenty of water with some in my saddlebag. I have plenty of reflector triangles and lights. I guess I will find out more soon. Thanks everyone!

Riding unpaved roads is a whole new flavor of fun on a bicycle. Enjoy!

Have fun Carla! If you enjoy it, you will have increased your 'potential places to ride' by 873%! Woo hoo!

Cheers.

Sweet! Let us know how it goes. In my experience the adventure intensifies exponentially the further off asphalt I am. This requires a shift in expectation and mindset ... one that has benefited me greatly in all aspects of life.

Having a bike that so yearns for unknown dirt that it nudges you off the tarmac is a beautiful delight! Enjoy, with wild abandon! Grin.

With abandon,
Patrick

If you are in a place like me, getting to trails or gravel is not super easy, but so worth it. Someone said it earlier but fun is the key word. I often take my non bike or roady friends on a ride from where I work ( which is a bit more trail adjacent) and they always end with a new appreciation for riding. You’re probably done by now. Hope it was a blast

My Pumpkin Ridge tires are as comfortable as my Baby Shoe Pass tires and were perfect for the 10 miles total pavement and gravel. At times I have to decide to take the risk of riding on back country roads in Ok. The nice scenery and plush tires made for a nice first attempt at gravel and I felt good about the whole idea.

I'm glad you had a good ride.  Is "gravel riding" literally on gravel?  I rode once on gravel and the bike felt like it was sliding from under me.

Yes it’s just gravel other than the pavement to get back and forth. That’s why I think the Pumpkin Ridge tires work so well for both pavement and gravel.
