Jeff Frane (All-City founder, @bikejerks, now Wilde) buddied up with Cane Creek to bring back a limited run of the EC30 threaded 110 headset.

Figured with all the 1" threaded headset users here, someone would be interested in a higher-end option. The $120 asking price isn't inflated because I believe the original Cane Creek 110 cost that much; whereas a CK Gripnut (let alone the discontinued 2Nut) is now asking for $175.

I hesitated on this, and should not have. A great 2nut replacement that I do not need at this time, but should have hoarded..sold out !

Their site has been acting strange since they listed those. Silver is showing in stock again for me, but has been in and out of stock for the past 24 hrs I’ve been checking. (I’ve been tempted to buy one, but fighting the urge to hoard a part I have no immediate use for.)

The FSA unit Rivendell uses is still an excellent value:  Headset - FSA Silver 1 inch, threaded – Rivendell Bicycle Works (rivbike.com)
If I had a time machine I would go back and get a lot more Shimano Ultegra headsets when they were $50 retail.  Lots of vintage builds require a shorter stack height than the Cane Creek or FSA.

Bill, if you had a Time Machine which specific Shimano Ultegra model would you get a lot more of?

Igor asked me a direct and objective question:

" Bill, if you had a Time Machine which specific Shimano Ultegra model would you get a lot more of?"

I will answer it, but on the expectation that the next time I ask Igor a direct and objective question, that he answers it.  It is my impression that when I have asked Igor direct and objective questions in the past, he has ignored them.  Now I will have some equity.

If I had a time machine, and could buy HP6500 (or HP7410) headsets new in box for normal retail of $49 or less, I'd buy 10 of them and bring them back in my time machine.  People are trying to sell them now on ebay for $200.  Rivendell frames from Waterford or Toyo used to come with that HP6500 headset.  My Romulus has the 105 level headset, which is fine, and might have the same bearings.

Bill, I think that's a great Q&A policy!

On another note, I like both ultegra and dura ace headsets, but I found them to have very flimsy-feeling crown races. I have not had any issues with them, but I simply feel like there's a huge disparity between shimano's crown races of that era and like let's say, crhis kings'. But damn, you can't beat the simple beauty of the unique bluish silverish sheen and reflective depth that the dura ace and ultegras give off.

Best,

On August 22, 2024 I asserted that IF I had a Time Machine and could go back to when HD6500 headsets were $50, I would go back and buy 10.

Turns out I found that heinous eBay overpricer pb*bikes was offering Deore XT headsets of the same era at $60*.  If you buy 4 or more they were only $45.  Those headsets are functionally identical to the HD6500, so, I put my money where my mouth was and bought four of them.

*the original asking price was $200, which is par for the course in pb*bikes land.
