Do you happen to know the size of the frame? When was it built?

Hello,
This is my husband's bike.  Unfortunately, it is being sold because he passed away, and took many specifics with him.  I have been in contact with Rivendell, although their records are not as extensive for older custom bikes.

I will contact to ask about frame size and a (likely) guestimate of when the bike was built.

Thank you,

Helen

Hi Helen,

Sorry for your loss.

How tall was your husband? That may not fully answer the question of frame size, but may narrow it down

Thanks

Hi Helen,

May your husband rest in peace and rise in glory.

Unfortunately my family has also dealt a few times in recent years with finding homes for beloved, specialized items like this. This beautiful bike certainly looks like it was beloved. If you happened to be in the DC area, I would happily volunteer to save you some trouble by stopping by and taking the relevant measurements. If Rivendell's records turn out to be too spotty, maybe someone on this list who lives closer to you would be similarly willing.

In addition to height, weight would have been taken into consideration in designing a custom frame. If you're able to estimate your husband's weight around the time when he got the bike, it might be helpful to interested parties (possibly including me, I'm 6'2" also) in determining how it would ride.

Condolences from Alexandria, VA,
John

Hi John,
I can't thank you enough for your kind words and offer to help.

I am in the PNW; about two hours north of Seattle (a small city called Bellingham)

Also, in terms of his weight, I would estimate he was approximately 200 lbs when he purchased the bike.

I am coming to understand more about his affinity for Rivendell; this community is truly wonderful!

Helen, I'm very sorry for your loss.  You're right about this group and the many caring, helpful folks who ride Rivendell bikes.  If you would like help with the measurements and details of that beautiful bike, I'd be happy to come to Bellingham.  I live on south Whidbey, though there might be a list member who lives closer to Bellingham.

Bruce; please read the thread. This is a less than ideal situation for the seller.

Joyce,
Thank you for your kind words and amazingly generous offer.  Another Rivendell community member sent me a schematic to help with measuring.  I attached the measurements I took earlier.  Could you weigh in on whether they seem plausible?

Thank you again!

Hi James,
The bike is still available.

Where are you located?  I am in the PNW; I am happy to ship the bike (it would be added to the $2000 asking price).

Adding my condolences for your loss.

My 1999 Rivendell Road custom was also that same color.

I was 6'2" back then and Grant had a 60cm built for me.

Hi Helen,

First, my condolences. It's a hard thing losing one's spouse and Life partner. I wish you much peace. Second, alas the bike is a touch too big for me. You'll have no trouble selling that beauty!

All the best,

One caveat about the sizing that's been worked out before folks think it's too tall for them: I believe in that schematic the seattube has been measured to the very tip of the lug, which is where that 65cm number is coming from. Rivendell measures to the top of the toptube as it crosses the seattube, which I think will be a number closer to the toptube number of 61, i.e., the frame is probably 62 x 61cm. Just a guess of course and no slight on Helen's measuring, she's doing the best she can with what folks have told her to measure.

I also offer my condolences, I'm very sorry for your loss.

Sorry this got posted under digest, not sure how...

Why not just measure standover? Easy enough to measure from the floor straight up to the middle of the top tube. I would think that would be a good indicator of fit for the right person.  I always try to go with standover due to BB height, how Rivendell measures, etc.  After owning 9+ Rivendell bikes Stand Over and TT length are to 2 figures I want to see.

I actually live in the historic (by West Coast standards, anyhow) South Hill neighborhood of Bellingham, WA and would be happy to offer my assistance. Reviewing the thread, the OP mentions living in the PNW but not Bellingham specifically — have we narrowed things down to my fair city?
