Back when Riv was still offering them, I bought a couple of MUSA short sleeved merino wool jerseys, the ones sold in royal blue. They have worked very well for me, very light-weight wool (comparable, I think, to what the SmartWool people call "microweight", but who's weighing?) that are cool in the heat and wick sweat very nicely. They're now fading, literally and figuratively, and it's clear I'm going to have to replace them, for next season if not this one. Anyone care to share a recommendation for a source of comparable jerseys?

Thanks,

rod

what size are you? i know it sounds like you are looking for a source for new, but i have a fine condition large Ibex merino short sleeve half zip. medium blue with some tasteful black piping in the right places. super soft and maybe worn 3 times.

i tend to wear lycra most of the time these days.

let me know if you have interest.

Thanks. XXL, which of course complicates matters a bit.

HI Rod,

FWIW, Kucharik is still in business and produces nice-quality, reasonably priced wool jerseys.

Their sizing runs toward the roomier end of things also, unlike most European jerseys.

Cheers,

I've been wearing the Minus33 merino 1/4 zip short sleeve shirts for several years. Good durability, one of mine has a few holes, but I think those are due to moths. My newer one was purchased almost two years ago and has no holes. I wash them in the machine with Kookaburra wool wash and hang dry. They're actually a little loose cut. No pockets unfortunately, but quite good otherwise.I get mine at amazon, see here: Minus33-Merino-Wool-Tarleton. These are the closest I have found to a merino bike jersey in a cut that is compatible for my heavier, shorter build (5'6", 200 lbs, size 46 chest). I wear an XL in these.

I've been wearing jerseys from Portland Cyclewear for several years and love them.   I even created my own logo to put on a couple which is kind of a fun thing to do.

Marc, funny thing, I had just ordered two of them. ;-)

Question: do you follow the washing instructions on the website (hand wash inside out, dry flat)?

No Rod, I've had good luck with cold water/ delicate cycle in the machine. I just throw them over the shower curtain rod for a few hours. I'm sure their suggestion is better, but I've only experienced a tiny bit of shrinkage in one of them.

Rod, how do the Portland / Oregon Cyclewear jerseys compare to the MUSA/Kucharik ones as far as weight and quality is concerned?

Have two of their jerseys, admittedly long sleeve and thicker variety, but the quality is out of this world.

The Wabis are wonderful; I have 3, an original edition (only gripe: the rear pockets are too high, making it awkward to get things in and out), and 2 lighterweight ones from a year or 2 ago -- lighter, but the wool is even nicer.

But I daresay even the newer ones would be too hot in summer. I did look at the Wabi site recently for ss wool jerseys, but found none.

I do have 3 of the old Riv Woolywarm ss jerseys, though alas at least 2 share the Rivendell jersey defect of excessive length (I had a very nice Riv ls jersey too; it was about 4" too long for the width, and I'm trim). After a few rides with the usual kit in the pockets, the hems are down around your knees. Still, very comfortable in weather up to mid 90s, at least in low humidity.

Patrick Moore, who just rode in a plastic Pearl Izumi jersey in mid-90s, unusually* humid ABQ, NM

* It sure felt humid on my ride just now, in early "monsoon" season; I stopped numerous times to fine-tune the cleats on new shoes, and I was dripping -- I was thinking of past summers in Washington, DC and Atlanta, or Delhi just before the monsoon, or Karachi always (hellhole with high humidity and no rain0. But just checked 2 weather sites for my zip: 24* and 27*. Still, high compared to the sub 10* we very often see, and too high for the very common swamp coolers here to work effectively (I have refrigerated air, thank God.

While I've got a couple of Kucharik jerseys on order, they haven't arrived yet; more on those later. I've worn the MUSA short sleeve jerseys that I bought from Riv some years back for a number of summers, and think highly of them. They're quite light weight, corresponding roughly to what Smartwool used to call "microweight", and currently calls "150". The Portland Cyclewear merino wool jerseys are beautifully made, with a somewhat heavier weight, but an open weave that has allowed me to wear them on several summer rides without overheating. They wick moisture well, and support evaporative cooling. I'll post again when I've got more experience with these, the Kucharik, and a Yeti Turq merino jersey that appears to be as light weight as the MUSA.

I'll be curious to hear how you Kucharik fits. It's just about impossible to find a picture of one actually on somebody. I fear they might be too baggy for my bony slim body, but would love to be wrong.

Dear Eamon,

The Kucharik jerseys are club cut, though less club cut than a Hanes beefy-T. I wear a large "race-cut" jersey (size 4) and a medium in Kucharik short-sleeve jerseys.

Wabi Woolens medium-tall is an optimum fit in their original (winter) jerseys, though a large is still a fit for me (just a relaxed one) and I fit a large in their (race-cut) sport jerseys.

Best Regards,

Will

Those royal blue ones were the best. There's nothing quite like them. Closest I found were the Ibex ones before they shuttered. They were plain, no frill lightweight t-shirts. You could wear them on and off the bike. There weren't form fitting either which I personally liked (though I think the benefit of wool comes from being closer to the skin to wick the sweat away?). Mine is also on the fritz and will be missed.
