I came across a craigslist listing for a 54cm Rambouillet built in 2004.  The listing claims it has 26" wheels.  were 26" wheeled Rambouillets a thing?  would the rambouillet make a good go fast bike for long distance mixed surface road rides?

H'ain't heard of a 26" Rambouillet in 54" size. 52's were 26" IIRC.

That's a pretty poor photo to go by, but it looks like there's an excessive amount of room between the seat tube and the rear wheel which would be consistent with smaller wheels.
IIRC, Gino had a 54" - http://www.cyclofiend.com/cc/2007/cc228-ginozahnd0107.html
Here's a late run 54" - http://www.cyclofiend.com/cc/2006/cc188-edlee1006.html

Here's a 52" with 26" wheels which looks about the same -

Given that the brake reach on the fork looks right, I'd assume it's a 52" and factory built that way.

I have an 52 cm Ram, it has 26" wheels (as were the 50 cm IIRC),  originally had a 54 cm that had 700c wheels. Sold it;  was a bit too big for me, wheel size was part of the stand-over/fit problem.

They were in the 50cm size for sure, and I believe 52. 54cm is a generic size in the Craigslist menu, the sloping toptube on that Ram tells me it is indeed a smaller one with 26" wheels.

Yes it does the things you described. Great bike, if this one is too small check out the 54 on Ebay.

I know the owner. I think she bought it from us, way back. As for how fast it is, any bike Melinda rides goes fast.

The blue run of Rams was the only one to offer 50 and 52 cm frames. They have 26" wheels (559 BSD) to preseve a better geometry. They cannot be upsized to 650B or 700 due to lack of space under brake bridge. They take up to 1 1/2" wide tires without fenders and 32mm tires with fenders. You could take a 54 cm and downsize its wheels to 650B or 559 with a change of brakes but I suspect the handling would suffer at 559.(I tried 559s on Ed Braley's 650B converted 53 cm, 700 orig design, Nashbar. It works but handles poorly) A 54 was made for 700 wheels.
