Not officially the first day of winter, but when it averages -4C for a ride, and there is snow and a partially frozen lake, I figured it's time for winter photos.

Despite the cold, I was dressed well and lasted 55km, with only a few descents that felt like -10C or worse.  Best thing was in the first 45 minutes I was passed only by a few cars; I love this time of year, where few folks are out-and-about, I don't see any other cyclists, and getting a good ride in feels like a great accomplishment.

What gloves are you using? I have yet to find the right ones to improve my winter riding game.

Our “end of night” temperatures have dropped down to the mid or low twenties recently, though with our high-desert differentials our coldest daytime high recently has been about 42-45F, and of course no precipitation for a few weeks, so bone dry. When I “rode” the dog on his run this morning about 8:40 am it was about 27*F and about 30*F when I left for church about 30 minutes later. A merino dress pullover under a Wabi Woolen first edition (= heavier) ls jersey converted to full zip placket under a very light Rab windbreaker was more than warm enough, with Pear Izumi earflap cap, Tifosi wraparounds with earpieces outside the flaps as fashion and common sense (inside, they create wind tunnels) require, Osloh jeans, narrow, clan something or other scarf, and surplus Bundeswehr lightly lined leather gloves from Varusteleka. Oh, and Darn Tough merino socks under Specialized “Vans-type” SPD shoes. Leah would be proud.

Other than that, a winter photo looks much the same as a late fall photo.

I just saw Robert’s query about gloves. FWIW, me, I have a graded series of gloves, from wonderful DeFeet knit wools good from say 45*F (I don’t wear gloves until it’s well below 50*F) down to just above freezing; then the Bundeswehr gloves mentioned, under which I can wear silk liners, then Pearl Izumi lobster gloves, then various combinations of the above with silk liners or DeFeets under heavier ones, then some nice brand-name (but forget brand) lined leather mittens with ragg wool under-mittens, under all of which I can wear the silk liners or the DeFeets. In practice, it’s generally the DeFeets, then the military surplus leather ones, then the PIs, the DeFeets under one or the other, then the mittens.

Tho’ I am pretty tolerant of cold, my hands are sensitive to it, and the mix ’n’ match collection above works well for me.

I love winter riding. My favorite condition is a frozen solid singletrack with light or no snow. What works for me down to the teens is the following. Thermal bib tights with jeans or other riding pant over. Wool socks & 5/10 winter thinsulate boots. If it gets really cold I will ditch the 5/10’s in favor of some old LLBean “duck” boots with separate thinsulate inserts. These are roomy enough for two pair of socks as needed and work almost as good as the 5/10’s for gripping the flats. Up top I start with a long sleeve merino base with a marvelous Kitsbow wool flannel. Top layer is a crazy good e bay score, 7 mesh GoreTex hard shell. It’s almost too good to be true as a windbreaker & breaths really well. Ample vents help if it starts to warm up. I will usually add a merino neck gator(?) and one or two wool caps from Snek Cycling - they are the best! I too have a variety of glove options with lobster claws getting the most use. None of these clothing items are cycling specific - they all work for other cold weather activities.
Ride on!

Inspired by Jay's B&W, here's a shot of coffee by the Slocan from 2 days ago.

A brisk ride. Light snowfall. Sipping coffee as the otters plunge and roll in the river. A fine winter ride!

Nice photo, John.  Love the combination of the wooden fence, river, mountain, cloud and of course the Riv.  Everything is well balanced.  One of my goals this winter is to snap some nice BW photos on winter rides.  I’m an hour outside Toronto so there will be no mountains in my shots ;-)

Here's some premium gravel chunk in Southern California. I was up at 7,500 ft elevation today, on a remote fire trail. I started off in a beanie and gloves but quickly removed those as the climb began. It was around 45F. Perfect weather for climbing hills on the Hillborne.

Thanks Jay. It's a pretty special spot. That 'fence' is actually a large bench from which all manner of mountain happenings can be observed.

North Toronto, eh? Lots of great riding up in the Copeland forest. Beautiful area even without the mountains.

Shane - that's a gorgeous view and photo.  Not sure my body can handle that chunk, I'm a champagne gravel kind of guy ;-)

John - I've heard of Copeland forest, but never ridden that far north (from home, or on a day trip).  You've planted the seed in my head though, that area is really nice and I should make a point of driving up there and perhaps riding 2 days, staying at an Air BnB or cabin for a night.  I ski in that area and I'm familiar with the landscape; rolling hills, curvy side roads, lots of lush forests.  Thanks!

Got out for a solstice ride from shortly after sun-up until shortly before sun-down - not a massive ride, about 55km, but mostly on trails / paths / stairs so I am pretty cooked now! Here in the PNW it was warm and wet; lots of precip but temps were mild at around 8 or 9C. I had to dial out the barrel adjusters on the brake levers midway, it was that kind of ride.

Jason, that is a sweet Bombadil!

I also went out for a solstice ride. It was mostly a road ride down to my local lake, Big Bear Lake in California. About 5 years ago they completed a route called "Pedal Path" that goes around the lake for a few miles. It's a nice ride but a little short. Overall it was about 25 miles.

I brought my Rambouillet with me. It's been incredibly warm in So Cal and yesterday was 60f. I still have my 38mm tires on the Ram, so no fenders. The only thing I add for winter road rides is this small front bag made by Acorn. I"ll stuff gloves, gaiter neck, beanie and a sandwich in there. It's the perfect size for short winter rides.

In the last photo you can see some snow on the mountain, which they've been blowing on the slopes since October.

Got in a rainy ~25 mile solstice ride on the Gus. (Fenders would have kept things a lot cleaner, but they don’t fit my hillibike aesthetic.) I must admit, for what started out as an impulse purchase on eBay the Gus has become my go-to bike for mixed terrain. Definitely a keeper!

Great-looking Gus, Jay! I wasn’t able to get a solstice ride in yesterday, but I did manage to organize a brisk 21° coffee outside ride with several members of my coffee crew. I decided to take my Gus, since I was hauling a load of freshly-baked Xmas cookies 😉

Hi Sue.  It’s an hour north of Toronto.  The people who had this built have some money; the wall went quite far, there were two beautiful gates to enter the property, nice landscaping and a very nice house from what I recall.

Shane,

Beautiful bike and scenery! I just got the same acorn handlebar bag for my road bike (unfortunately not a Riv) and am finding it to be great as well, a big improvement over the teeny under the seat bag I've been using, and it works fine without a front rack. I am looking for a bell that will work well with the bag. What is the one that you are using in the picture?

Jim, it’s a Steerstopper - a device to brace the front wheel so the bike can be leaned without a kickstand. Roadinis don’t come with a kickstand plate, and I haven’t found the sandwich plate kind very satisfactory on that bike, they tend to loosen despite my best efforts

Got it! I kinda thought it was something like that, but I guess I associate them with cargo bikes and seeing it on your beautiful stripped down Roadini made my brain kind of stutter! It did remind me I need one for my Surly Skidloader.
I know what you mean about the kickstand and non-plate chainstays. I have a kickstand on my '96 All-Rounder but I'm afraid of crimping the stays, so I have the kickstand just barely tightened and i'm constantly nudging it back away from the crank arm with my foot. I wrapped the stays with a little Newbaums tape to protect them.

Jim, same. I have already scratched the underside chainstay paint on my 2020 tigged one, even after following Grant’s advice and not overtightening. Here it is after last weekend’s rebuild with parts bin stuff. Its fancy parts went on the new one, including Rich built wheels with red Bitex road hubs.

Relevance to the thread - I was collecting my mini PC tower from work with a Burley Nomad trailer that I pulled with the tigged one, last week for a couple of days work from home for the Xmas break. I do a multi modal commute one stop on the LA Metrolink train in Socal. I usually take the bike on the train, but it would have been too awkward with the trailer as well. Guards don’t roll out the ramp for bikes, so you have to detach and roll them on separately. It is only a mile walk from Chatsworth station to my office so I left the Roadini locked at Simi station and did that instead.
Simi station is pretty safe, and I put U locks through both wheels.

Spurcycle! And it looks like the original expensive model with the adjustable band clamp, not the cheaper, later one with the plastic clamp. Full approval. I have original Spurcycles on 2 bikes with a spare from the Monocog-original to go back onto the Monocog-reincarnated.

They are exquisitely designed and manufactured and, more to the point, have the most piercing, alerting sound despite their small size. And, they are so small that they fit in places that big bells won’t.

Patrick Moore, in high desert SW Albuquerque, NM, where we have well-below-freezing morning temps but 30*+ temperature differentials and no precipitation, so no snow since a fluke fall of 3” or so back in early November that lasted about 2 hours until the mile-high sun came up. (We did get 0.01” of rain yesterday afternoon.)

In that locking configuration the back wheel, if locked inside of the rear triangle, does secure the frame.

Patrick,

Josh is correct, I did the Sheldon Brown style of lock around the rear rim, through the rear triangle so it secured the frame as well. The front wheel was harder to do wheel and frame together with the bike rack as the awkward shape meant I couldn't go through the frame as well and still fit the rear of the bike to the bike rack, so in that case I just did the front wheel to the rack.
It was in a low traffic area in a nice neighborhood so I wasn't too concerned about the bike, also that bike is my cheapest build so far at under $2300, the wheels were a take off of a Cannondale we no longer have, so I reckoned those at basically no cost. A lot of the other parts are trickle downs from upgrading my other Rivs, like the Tektro R559 brakes, Pletscher rack and Dia Compe SS6 levers.
I misspoke when I said it was a 2020 Roadini, it is the 2022. I also have an orange 2020 Roadini, but that one is the 47cm / 650b wheel version, and is a slightly darker orange.

Of course, I’m slightly visually dyslexic but on several closer looks I do see that yes, the locked rear wheel would secure the frame as well. I lock my own bikes that way, in fact.

I was interested in participating in the Rapha Festive 500 over the holiday break but with the way I tend to ride (not too fast, and even less efficient choice of routes) it would have meant too much time away from home while we're all off work - so instead I modified the plan to be: Six rides, each on a different bike as I've got six in my quiver, and to make it a challenge I'd ride each a minimum of 50km. That kind of distance is not unusual for either Riv, but for my ~1970 Raleigh Twenty that's quite an outing. So far I've completed five of the six, and my last one will be on NYE. 58km on the Raleigh Twenty, 63km on the Hillborne, 66km on the Bombadil, 53km on the Brompton, and did a very rainy 55km on the Crust Wombat today.  Here are photos from the two Riv rides.

Also hopefully on topic, here is a short video a friend uploaded from their GoPro footage of a ride a few weeks ago that I thought might be of interest as it has lots of footage of my Bombadil in its natural habitat!

Well done on the self-curated Festive 500 variant.  I'm trying to do the actual Festive 500, for the discount coupon.  I'm at 332/500 with two days left.  Like Jason, I make it extra hard on myself by overlaying my Festive 500 rides with my Wandrer.earth objectives.  I'm trying to win the MASSIVE bonus for the most new miles in Marin County.  So, while I'm on-target for my Festive 500, I'm doing some crazy strenuous stuff.  There are a lot of residential neighborhoods in Marin County with >20% grades.  That's a tough way to earn kilometers..

I'm envious of the weather some of you are having right now.  Lovely photos BTW.  Keith, I can tell from your photos that you're a good photographer.  I am not, but it's one of those hobbies that sits just outside my purview.  Maybe one day!

After a few rides last week feeling under the weather, I was really looking forward to the 'good' weather forecast on new year's eve.  I spend more time on the weather app than my daughter does on social media!  My family asks why I'm always looking at forecasts or talking about the weather, "it's because I like to play outside". Temp was around 0-3C, very little wind.  Roads were dry.  I was planning a 2hr ride as I wasn't sure how I would fair given how I felt last week.  With this lingering cough though, I was drinking more water than normal, and when I arrive at the planned halfway point, all the shops were closed so I couldn't get more water.  I checked my phone for who was open.  A popular destination for cyclists, motorcyclists and motorists was open so I rode further on to refuel.  I chatted with a cyclist there for a while, it was a great stop.  However, that meant a gravel road (which was wet and meant a clean up later on), and extra climbing.  In the end I rode for just over 3 hours and close to 800m elevation (a good amount for southwest Ontario).  I didn't go fast, but I was smiling the whole way!

The pic with the train in background was as luck has it, when I stopped to respond to a text from my daughter (right place, right time).  I then stopped before a steep s-bend climb on the additional journey to the cafe for water/snack, to capture this abandoned railway bridge.  The shot at the building is 20 minutes from home and I stopped to have the last of my snacks and to face some headwind, figured I would attempt a nice photo vs. quick-pic.BikeDec31-2.jpeg

Happy New Year from NM! We have many miles of bike trails within the ABQ city limitsNew Years Eve 2024.jpg, and you can connect to some nice city opens spaces like this one (Anderson Field) in the North Valley, which is a favorite place for people to walk their dogs. I don't know who does it, but this horse statue gets dressed up for different times of the year, and I guess this was the New Year's outfit. There are many geese and cranes wintering in the fields here (and all over the Rio Grande valley), though none were very close to this spot yesterday. BTW one of the many features I'm loving on my Riv is the kickstand! Not sure how I got by so many years without having one of those.

Took the Platypus out for a jaunt today. It was snowy, cold and blustery in the NC mountains so we ferried the bikes down to South Carolina where it was just chilly and blustery. - but no snow. Rode for a couple hours on the usually busy Swamp Rabbit trail, though today we pretty much had it to ourselves.

I've probably posted a previous pic of this sculpture that stands along the trail -  it's a favorite of mine.

These were taken yesterday and still no snow here in So Cal.

This area is called Holcomb Valley. It was once a decent sized town during the gold rush. Now there's only a few remnants of its history. A great area to ride though! It sits right around 7K FT elevation. The gates normally get closed to this area Nov 1st.

I brought the Yves Gomez with me on Amtrak down to NYC last week for a couple of days. What with the cold, blustery weather and post-New Years Day lull, I pretty much had the place to myself. The studded winter tires, required here in Vermont, made an interesting nibbling noise on the bare pavement.

I am very impressed by the artistic quality of so many of the photos posted on this list, which so competently frame the beauty of a vast variety of landscapes, climates, locations. I recall a Bedouin woman’s (I think she was a woman; the speaker was a Bedouin; source forgotten) non-bike-related declamation that I read not too long ago about the beauty of the bare Saudi Arabian desert in the early morning sun.

Still no real winter here in Vancouver BC. Today was a mix of sun and cloud with a little bit of light rain, about 5C (around 40F?). Bit over 60km of aimless riding; I rode out to a viewpoint I like to stop at when coming back from the ferry a couple hours from home, then from there realized it wasn't too far to climb up to the back side of one of our local ski hill mountains, where I connected up back to another area where I knew good views would be had before dropping down to the beach for sunset. No complaints.

@rmulcahy - that's a great looking bike.  I had to zoom in to see the model but even in low light, great build!
@jeff - enjoy the new ride. I've watched YouTube videos of the riding in the Hudson valley, lucky guy!
@aeroperf - riding in the snow can be so much fun with the right bike, and snow conditions.  It's mainly miss for me, but when it hits, it's unreal.
@jason - stunning photos.  It has been colder/snowier here in Ontario than past years, but that's probably a good thing!
@bill - I've never lived around mountains, and cresting a peak like that on 5 different bikes in a year (recalling your goals) is a great achievement.

I had a great weekend.  1:20 ride after work on Friday night.  Clear roads, just a bit cold (-5C).  Went skiing with my daughter on Saturday (excellent snow conditions 1.5hr north of where I live).  And today, Sunday, got out for a 2hr ride.  Apologies for the non-Riv content, but the conditions meant the Fargo with fenders was the way to go, and it was!

With little convincing, a couple friends and I went out for a winter century. its been an oddly mild winter up here in the pnw. An undershirt and wool sweater on top with wool long johns and a pair of dickies kept me at the right temp all day, even in the foothills of the cascades. I was more than impressed by the moisture-wicking that wool sweater was able to do during short burst of rain we got along the way.

I think this is only the second time I've had the Roadini out in 2025.  Bad weather = Salsa Fargo with it's wider tires, studded tires on a second wheelset, fenders; and well, I don't baby it like Leo!

I went out early before the gusty winds arrived.  It was cold (-11.3C) but the roads were clear, just lots of salt residue that I cleaned off after the ride.  I have added a few clothing tips I've gleaned off the web and they helped keep me warm (enough) on nearly the whole 1hr+ ride.  Photos were not great, but it's hard to snap nice photos with attention to good photography when it's this cold.

After not riding this bike for a few weeks I quickly remembered just how much I love this bike: it was so comfortable, whether I'm on the hoods, tops or drops; smooth pedalling with no odd sensations, my whole body felt relaxed and I felt like I was dishing out a nice pace, I just took in the sites and nearly car-free roads.

Inspired by the Bike Farmer, I took the Riv up Alpine Road to the gate to Dirt Alpine. I'm, however, old and out of shape, so I turned around and was reminded in no uncertain terms that I should have packed a vest. I dressed for the temperature, not the wind chill! Anyway, it ended up being a nice 21 mile ride. Last weekend I was on call for work, so no bike rides, which meant cleaning the drivetrain and giving the frame a reasonably good cleaning. I'll take my Ibis Mojo with 54-559 knobbies all the way to the top sometime soon, and, if the trails seem tolerable, I may take the Riv up there too. Alpine Road was still maintained as a fire road in the '90's when I first road it on my RB-1 with 25mm tires pumped up way too high. It's been a while since I took a "road" bike up there.

I took the Platypus out for test ride on the initial build. Only ~30 degrees Fahrenheit, but that’s considered pretty cold here in SC (the state, not the region). I did see a couple of guys braving it out at the velodrome. I’m still hopeful for some measurable snow to play in with the Susie.

Looks great Richard.  Are those studded tires?

I moved to Victoria, BC last spring and I'm still getting used to the winter weather.

here is ol' QB leaned up against the gate of the Cedar River Watershed, aka the turnaround point on the winter 100k populaire with the Seattle Randonneurs.  37/17 fixed was a bit too spinny on the solstice ride, so I "shifted" to 42/17 freewheel.  Much better.

My front fender flap needs engineering/enhancement, feet got very wet indeed.  Is there a preferred shoe cover for flat pedals?

Great looking QB Cal and kudos to you riding single speed/fixie around here with all the hills! I sold my fixie (Brother R725) a couple of years ago and miss the simplicity and lightness.

Jason, no. Just ordinary 2.6” Honchos. Truth is studs were not necessary. Very little snow & quite crunchy. Good grip actually & much of the trail had little to no snow.

Takashi - that's a great shot of Mt Ontake.  Kind of brooding - like maybe it's getting ready again to blow off some steam.

Not so much snow here in North Carolina, in fact it's almost balmy. I could be fooled into thinking it's an early spring (but I know better)

Riding at Mr. Vanderbilt's little country house I see! Really like that build with the black wheels, fenders, cages, saddle, and bag. A deluxe bike for deluxe real estate!

It snowed overnight at lower elevations (but not in the city) so I headed out for a ~42km ride into the valley where I knew I'd encounter snow - and there was the perfect amount!  It packed into the fenders pretty good, but the wheels kept spinning (noisily). I was glad to have the fenders though because it was slushy in the transition area.

Nice photos, Jason and Jay!

I was out on my Fargo today, won't bother uploading another photo of it (non-Riv lol).  What caught me off guard was my, now, failed, trick to keep my hands warm with nitrile gloves (as the first layer, under thin gloves, with lobster mits on top).  On my last few rides this worked well down to -12C.  Today was very sunny, but apparently -9 and colder with a slight northerly wind.  After an hour my hands were very sweaty, and then because really cold.  I had to pull over and ditch the nitrile gloves.  Within a few minutes my hands were warm again.  Maybe it wasn't cold enough for them?

@Jay Lonner - your bike is a mess lol, and those rims, yikes 🤣  .  When you get home after a ride like that do you clean the drivetrain, the whole bike?  Just curious, as I would like to become more okay with letting my bike get like that.

I baby my Riv; I know, it's a bike, it's meant to be ridden and get dirty.  I do ride in any conditions, but in the winter I mainly use my Salsa Fargo with fenders, disk brakes.  Happy to get the Riv dirty in the summer, on trails and such, but avoid wet and/or salty winter roads.

Brian I’m always interested in learning more about the pedigree of these bikes and the ways in which those of us who ride them influence one another. I’m intrigued by the custom bag you’ve snuck in behind the seatpost — as I recall it was Andy at Lord’s Luggage who made it for you. For the moment I’m digging the minimalist aesthetic of my Gus, but down the road I might be tempted to copy you.

Jay - yes, Andy made that custom bag for me after also making a prototype. The 2nd version got the design nailed down. He probably still has the templates for it, because we anticipated other Riv owners might want these bags for their long wheelbase bikes. Clems and Susies would make great candidates.
