Hey all,

Curious about your experiences running the Silver1 42/28 crankset (or 38/24, etc.) with a 10-speed chain. My 650B all-rounder has a full 2014 SRAM Apex 10-speed drivetrain except for a IRD Defiant 46/30 crank. Every so often the 10-spd chain drops between the Defiant's rings and free-spins like it’s in neutral (I think the circa-2014 Defiant is technically a 9-speed). I'd like to swap in my Silver1 42/28, but wondering what luck you've had pairing the Silver1 with a 10-speed chain. It seems from earlier posts* on the Owners Bunch that this works, but I wanted to double-check before I swap.

Cheers,
WIll M in NY

*It seems some of you fixed 42/28 chain drops with FD height tweaks: https://groups.google.com/g/rbw-owners-bunch/c/I7RgPzOEPxQ AND some reported success with 42/28 shifting smoothly with modern chains https://groups.google.com/g/rbw-owners-bunch/c/QNAR_Q7LD6g AND a few reported low doubles like 42/28 very livable: https://groups.google.com/g/rbw-owners-bunch/c/M6002Q2y85c . But I can't seem to see specific answer to the 10-speed question.

No Silver crank or 10 speed chain, but I am using an 11 speed chain with an old Ritchey Logic triple with bash guard in the outer position and 44 and 28 in the middle and inner positions, original ring spacing, and while I admit I don’t shift rings that often, I have never dropped the chain between the rings.

I do recall dropping and spinning a 9 speed chain between the 44 and 30 t rings of an old TA Pro 5 Vis double, but for some reason this happened only a few times after first installing it, and after these initial incidents it went away and I forgot about it.

Patrick, what front shifter are ya usin' with that 11-speed rig?  I bet my problems would go away with friction shifting, but I'm trying to make a go of it with the Apex brifter. Thx. --Will M

I use Suntour barcons. Note that the cassette is 10 sp but I use an 11 sp chain for —so scuttlebutt says— crisper shifting using a chain a generation later.

I've definitely had the chain between the rings - happens on a 9 spd Ultegra triple I've doublized into 48/30 with a 10s chain.  I bought some shim washers to push the outer ring further toward the inner (it's on the middle position of the triple), but I'm not using the crank right now and haven't rebuilt yet.
