It's not every day I encounter the word SALUKI in my day-to-day, but found it yesterday in the New York Times crossword as an answer to the 17-across clue, "Tall, slender hound."  I'm a big fan of Will Shortz's puzzle editing, but in this case he really missed an opportunity for a Rivendell-specific clue..."Close cousin of A. Homer Hilsen," perhaps?

I saw that too, but I have to say I only knew the Riv meaning. I did not know SALUKI was a dog too. Still I managed to finish the puzzle, yay
