The All Rounder came to me from the original owner who had lots of documentation, ordered in 1995, delivered in January 1996.  Will continue to evolve components, working towards Shimano 8-speed index, enjoying the Gevenalle shifter pods.

John, wonderful bike, and color. What is the saddle height in the picture. Thanks, Steve

such a classic! i really get nostalgic about this era of Rivendell. any idea what this color is? it seems like it was somewhat common on rivs from this time.

John, that's lovely. I can't read the tires' labels (generally I hate over-logo-ing, but I advise RH to make their labels bigger) but are your tires Naches Passes? Extra lights? I've put almost 200 miles on the Naches Pass EL's that I installed on my June 2020 Matthews custom to replace the Elk Passes, and they are wonderful tires; really, even taking into account 1/2 lb additional weight on each wheel compared to the Elk Pass's, they don't seem to roll any slower.

If your tires are indeed the Naches Pass, question: could you get fenders over the tires and under the brakes on that frame?

Also, what are those cantilever brakes? I am not merely curious; I really like my Tektro CR 720s with Salmon (Shimano cartridge) aftermarket pads, but I do get mild front shudder, and I am open to alternatives.

My first Riv road custom was a late 1994-ordered, early 1995-delivered custom road bike to replace my 1992 XO-1; I told Grant, "Make it better than the XO-1." He replied, "Oh, it'll be better." And indeed it was, designed around the original All Rounder but with tightened angles and road tubing; very nice. The 2 later custom roads improved even on this one, and my current Chauncey Matthews 26" wheel road bike for AM and fixed gear drivetrains takes it further, to the apotheosis and ultimate fruition and summum bonum and Holy Grail of Grant's initial, road-biased development of that original All Rounder.

The color is a very nice green that Grant seemed to like in the early
days. My first All Rounder-based 26" wheel road custom was the same
color (one reason why John's AR provokes such a torrent of nostalgic
sentiment). I've since come to prefer Rivendell's later sage green
(which goes perfectly with the cream that, stirred in with this
original green, might well give you that higly preferred sage green),
but this original Riv green does indeed provoke atavistic and
sentimental memories, and it deserve a place on the archival palette.

Nice comments, thanks.  Color official name os golden olive, and that it is.  Little metallic, little pearl sheen to it.  Don’t think cream would be a good contrast.

Tires are older Compass.  Think they are equivalent to Natches Pass, 1.8”.  Room for fenders.  Tektro 720 cantis.  Still dialing in to eliminate the front squeal, the original owner had given up on that and installed B-brakes, which I don’t favor.  Love the big volume supple tires.  Think this bike can be a true all a rounder, city bike, light and heavy touring, gravel.  Much like the Atlantis.

Original owner gave me paint chips Grant had sent to finalize the color selection.

Beautiful, John.  Timeless bike!  And I actually prefer the single color paint jobs from the earlier Rivs,  I had a light blue Road that I sold that was a single color.  I now have an early AR also, but it has a contrasting cream head tube, and I think it makes it a little foppish.

Aha. Thanks for the clarification. So this means that my current (summer, 2020) road bike may be the culmination of the trend starting with the XOs and passing through the All Rounder, but diverted toward road/pavement riding: 26 X 42s with fenders, normal gauge, thinnish-wall 531 frame, geometry tweaked for best handling on pavement.

Wow. Gorgeous bike. Funny to think that, in its day, this was considered out there and wacky. Kinda like the Hillibikes of today. Of course for us bicyclists that came of age during a certain time period, the classic lines and beautiful lugwork of this bike will always look right, even with 26" tires and cantilever brakes.

I’ll echo what others have said already!... Wow! Gorgeous ride!

I’m not sure that I would have had the courage to pick the green bar tape... I tend to be a “black or brown matches everything” kinda guy but I think that combination works swimmingly.

Hope you enjoy riding it as much as we enjoy ogling it!

Thanks for sharing.

John,

Nice looking bike. I have a Rivendell Mountain in single color silver from that era I got from Rivendell. It has a sloping top tube. When I ordered it I wanted the option of possibly using dirt drop bars on it. There have been times I wish I would have gotten the cream contrasting painted headtube.

Are you friction shifting the SRAM Rival rear der or are the shifters SRAM compatible?

Thanks,

Reginald Alexis

Shifting - have an 8-speed shimano bar end, and thats the intended end result, to have 8-speed index in the rear.  The vintage Deore XT hubs have a 7 speed cassette, and don't think it can accept 8 speeds - maybe using a cut down 10 speed cassette.   I've tried it in index mode and it seems to work on the 7 speed, except needing to use two clicks on one of the lower cogs.  What I've read is Sram is compatible with Shimano index wise.

On Riv mountain frames, wonder how many were made and how different they might be from the All Rounder.  Sloping top tube makes sense, maybe slightly more relaxed front geometry?

Difference between the the All-Rounder and Mountain is tubing, sloping top tube, and vertical rear drop outs. The Mountain was supposed to come with it's own proprietary lug set and some special fork crown, but I think in the interest of cost savings at the time probably due to the lower number of Mountains built in comparison to All-Rounders and Road Standards they just used the same lug set as the All-Rounders. I was always interested to see what the fork crown was going to look like. My hopes were that they would do a version of the Ritchey Bi-plane fork crown. May be it is the fork crown used on the Appaloosa. Rivendell that I know never showed any copied of the initial Mountain lugset.

The early Rivendell bikes will have small differences between frames due to the nature of the options available. I had exchanges with Grant about building with KGB/Breezer drop outs and Rollercam mounts. He said no on the Breezer style mounts due to the style not being out of style with the nature of the frame build, but was ok with going with Rollercam mounts. I eventually decided to stick with cantis.

I think the options were cable stops or shifter mounts  on the downtuble, extended headtube, contrasting cream painted headtube, braze on types and numbers and possibly rear spacing.

Oh man John, that's a Drooler. Forgot about that lovely shade of delicate pea green. Still have the photo chart (actually a photo of painted tubes) Grant sent. What is your serial #? Build month?   I'm trying to figure out build date. It should start with a letter. Mine is L followed by a 96. Theoretically that means a November or December build month in 1996 (Took possession in Feb of '97 I think) but not sure. The next numbers appear to be a 0 and a 6. Unfortunately after 3 paint jobs the #'s fuzzy.
Here's a photo of it fresh outta the box in Feb '97 and another one from last year (about to go fishing). You can do anything with these guys. They're not called All Rounders for nuthin'.

Another fine example. Wonder how many are still out there, appreciated by a knowledgeable owner?  Like that front rack. Whose is it? And what's your serial number?
