Hi Friends,

It’s tough out there, isn’t it. Could we use a little joy? Would you qualify a sneak peak at a new Rivendell bike model as a joy-bringer? If not, stop right here....

Are you still with me? Get ready to be delighted! I have wanted a new Rivendell mixte ever since the rumored Anniversary Mixte of 2018. Will - who has had too many emails from me about the Anniversary Mixte, which became the Fancy Cheviot, and ultimately evolved into the Platypus - sent me an email. And in that email was the most remarkable photo...

It’s Grant, with my new Platypus in his arms. Everything about this photo is so endearing. The way Grant is proudly presenting the bike, this long-awaited fancy mixte, named after his favorite animal. The way his eyes are covered so you can’t read the pride in them but you can see in his outstretched arms how he hopes you are pleased with his masterpiece. It’s too much for me. I’m overcome. It is likely to go on my wall...the photo, not the bike.

No, the bike will be ridden half to death. I won’t be precious about it, but I will dress it up fancy. Analog is doing another one of their famous colorful wheelsets and dyno systems for me, and the accent colors we chose are rose and teal. (If you only have 2 bikes, you get to splurge on the builds. See photo for wheel/dyno selection.) Rivendell will do the rest of the build, and I am really looking forward to this because I haven’t ever chosen the parts for a complete bike build before. My last *new* Rivendell was the 2012 Betty Foy, and I didn’t know a thing about bikes then, so I just requested Keven choose everything. In 2020, I know just enough to have an opinion and I’m really looking forward to Will’s phone call about the parts this week.

The mixtes are the best bikes Rivendell makes, and they have outdone themselves with this beauty. It’s regal, like a ballroom gown, and made better because it’s not just a pretty face. It may appear as a contradiction, because it is exquisite, yes, but not at the expense of function. It is smart. Capable. Beautiful. Useful. This is the DNA of a “joy-bringer.”

I hope this beautiful bike brightens your day a little bit, and stokes your excitement for Grant’s upcoming, long-awaited and much-celebrated Rivendell mixte. I wish you all a Platypus this November!

Leah

I laughed, but in a friendly way, not a sneering way, at your enthusiasm, and opened my eyes wide at the build list; hi-end! Nice!

I'm not sure a Platypus is my cup o' tea, but yours as described will certainly be an elegant build and, if you ride it as you've ridden your others, it will be a very practical build.

Between my eyes and my monitor, I can't say what the frame color is; can you clarify in words what I can't see on screen? Purpley-gray?

Me, I am just making final arrangements to trade the remnants of a Riv Road custom for a brutalist, cheap (but nicely cheap!) ready-to-ride Redline Monocog 29er; this after I just had the same weird custom replaced by a locally built, more integrated (racks and fenders and lighting routing), more liberally tired (takes 42s under fenders) replacement.

Wow. That is gorgeous. Is it red? If that is the frame color, your wheelset will look killer.I would send you my raspberry Brooks, but my Susie arrived today and it's slated for that bike. Which means I must stop procrastinating and build the dang wheels.

Is it red? It can’t be red! The Platypus doesn’t come in red! You guys are funny.

But, since there seems to be question about what color my bike actually is, well, here...

Must be a trick of the light,
Leah

That color is the most wonderful color I've seen since your water/aqua/silvery/blue Clementine bike color, which is now the former best color ever for a bike color.  And, with rose colored rims--ooh, la, la!!!!   And, the graceful lines--so sophisticated yet soft looking.  If at least one of the other colors is half as nice as the "it can't be red" color, I will be first in line for it.

"No, the bike will be ridden half to death."

You've got some riding to do then.  So far, the half-life of a Rivendell is still an open question.  If you keep buying new ones, you'll never know.  Steel is real.

Welcome, Platypus!

Whatever the color is called, I call it spectacular. I didn't know it was possible to be the recent recipient of a Joe Bell painted custom and still be envious of another color and frame but here I am!

Leah I know this project was a long time coming - I remember talking about the Anniversary Mixte back when I was young! - and you put a lot of time and thought into the color. Between you and Grant and the painter and builder..nailed it! That's a lovely bicycle, I can't wait to see it built and you flying around on it in your Instagram videos.

The color looks great - the red equivalent of the new HH gold color.  I guess I'll need to wait until tomorrow to find out the production colors.
Are there rack mounts on the top of the fork crown? It looks like there's something there.

Hi Paul, the bikes are not completes, so you’ll get to choose your parts. The Platypus frames are supposed to arrive in November, or so the last newsletter said. There is rumored to be more news come this week, when the newsletter and BLAHG post are released.

I hope we all get one! Let’s clean them out of Platypuses. Platypuses on parade!

Our rough frame delivery timeline

A lot of people have emailed asking what's coming when. Here's a rough outline of what's coming in the next 7 months or so

  • Sam Hillbornes - around Halloween
  • Platypus frames - November
  • Appaloosas - early next year
  • Clem Ls - March or April
  • Charlie Gallops - sometime around Summer
  • Homers after that
  • Susie/Gus after that

Complete bikes are tricky nowadays; A lot of manufacturers were shut down in the beginning of the pandemic and we're really feeling that gap in work now. We have to be more flexible in what parts we pick on the completes and you'll have to trust us to not pick anything bad. It'll likely get fancier actually.

While the razzsorb is incomparable, the production colors are lovely for this mixte bicycle. The limolive evokes one of my favorite bicycle colors, Legnano green. As a consolation for missing out on Leah's luscious razz, it goes well with red accents. And the blilver is really nice too, more green than recent blues. Try it with white grips and pedals!

I think that would depend on how much your fenders wiggle.  But I doubt anyone on the list would know the answer at the moment. My guess is if it fit 50mm  (not 50c) tires with fenders, and they had tried it a few times, it would probably say fits 50mm tires with fenders. Or 45 with, 50 and wiggle room without (so you could probably run 48 or 50mm knobbies?

Platypus hasn't been released for sale, yet.

I hope Riv is suuuuper busy with these frames and others that are coming into their shop. Riv noted that it will no longer take frames out of the boxes and do their usual prep... only to re-box and send it on the way to customers. This should make it a lot easier for them, and faster for customers to receive frames.

(Riv will still do prep if asked... charging for time as they should.)

  • Comfortable seat
  • upright Handlebars within reach
  • Rack Mounts in the right place
  • Fender Mounts in the right place
  • Room for big tires 2.2" (up to 48mm fendered)
  • Wiggle room for those big tires

That’s a great looking bike! Sorry, Clem(entine), there’s a new sheriff in town, Raspberry Sparkle. I expect you’re going to really love that sweet ride.

Leah, that is absolutely fabulous and inspiring. I can only hope the colors of the production models are coming in are more appealing in person

Patrick, the Redline Monocog is a great bike and I've very nearly bought one on a couple occasions; probably would have were it not for the fact I've got a half dozen very similar bikes already.

Great simple bikes for just getting out and exploring/ cruising.

I assume you are getting the Dick brake version?
You will post pictures correct?

Eamon, I laughed out loud when I read this. My poor Clementine...it’s hard not to ride the newest, shiniest thing, isn’t it. If the Platypus moves more lithely uphill, my Clem will REALLY be neglected. But I’m still loyal to it; it’s a keeper. Raspberry Sparkle though...that’s just got a nice ring to it...🤣

Dick break, yes, and I will post photos, but not under the Platypus heading!

I owned a 2010 model (the one traded is 2012, I think, so similar -- the later ones have slacker heads and steeper seat tubes) and it was a great deal of fun. I'd converted it to drops (Salsa Bell Laps) but may well keep this one with an upright bar of some sort, if I can find one that doesn't hurt my left palm. And I hope to have 3" tires on it. A tank, but a fun tank!

Someone offered me a Pugsley in trade (didn't you stop by once with your Pugsley?) but only after I'd made the deal with the owner of the Monocog.

I don’t have the bike or its parts yet..but I do have this one thing waiting for it: these Ergon grips in a crisp white color, that I didn’t think the company still made. I love Ergon grips, but they are only ever available in black or cork, and both always clash with my bikes. I buy them anyway (because they’re so lovely to use) but will you look at these? Aren’t they so much better for a raspberry and cream bike? I think Roberta is gonna twin with me on her Platypus. Any other #RivSisters want to join us?

I’m off to hunt down some metal fenders now. I didn’t realize that finding fenders for 700c wheels would be difficult - it seems most (of the ones I like) are made for the smaller width tires. I was hoping to put my favorite waterfall fenders (“wavy” by Velo Orange) on the Platypus, but alas, 650b only. And I don’t like the snakeskin look, so I limit myself further yet.

I’m finalizing the parts order with Will first thing tomorrow, and then hopefully I’ll have the bike soon! It will be sitting for a while because there will be no wheels for a good 5 weeks, but at least I can pull it into bed with me at night and and tell it how much I love it.

I definitely see a Platypus in my future but have my own ideas for a set up.  I can be a fraternal twin with you and Roberta, but not an identical.  I think the grips would complete the bike's color scheme (and I am soooo jealous of that beautiful pomegranite color).  I intend to go with cork grips and they feel nice and weather even nicer.  I had Honjo fluted fenders on my Soma.  They were beautiful and I loved them but after two years the back bolt wore through the metal.  But I ride my bikes hard in all weather conditions.  I have gone with Woody fenders ever since and although they are pricey, I have found them well worth it.  I am about to move back to the Pacific Northwest and will need a bike that can take the rain.  I look forward to seeing your finished bike.  Please post lots of pictures.

Thanks for the recommendation - I’ll check the Woody fenders out!

Tell us about your build! What are you thinking? I’m sorry your bike isn’t raspberry - I would have loved for the production run to come in that color.  But the blue and green offered are really lovely - which one are you planning to purchase?

Oh, wow, just checked out the fenders and am surprised that the wooden fenders hold up so well in rain. Very cool!

I will have to see about the colors.  My Soma is the "Rivendell Blue" color.  From the pictures, the blilver looks closer to teal so that might work.  But I want a different color than the bikes I already have so if it's too close to my Soma, I will opt for something else.  I am not crazy about the limolive but will wait for further pictures.  I am also exploring a custom paint job.  But I do ride my bikes hard and all the time and given the beausade I put on them, it might be best to go with a production color.  If I recall correctly, you are in Las Vegas and don't have to deal with the same weather conditions so aluminum fenders may work out for you and would look beautiful with your raspberry and cream color scheme.  The metal was thin enough on my honjo's that the bolt rotted through and I had to rig it out with zip tie until I got it replaced.  The Woody's are very light, stunningly beautiful, and incredibly sturdy.  I am playing with different ideas for my build but I do know I want a single ring crank with a 10 or 11 cassette and a sunracer bar end shifter (and the aforementioned cork grips).

Leah,

Try Simworks if you want aluminum fenders.  I have an MIT Atlantis with 700 x 55c Rene Herse Antelope Hill tires. Simworks has a fenders all the way up to 80 mm wide.  Mine are the Flat 65s.  They fit only needing a very small crimp on either side by the fork.   Simworks has other sizes as narrow as 35 mm as well as other profiles (Round,Turtle, Fuji and Liner).  James at Analog said that Simworks fenders, which are made by Hong by the way, have the best attachment hardware.  Love your new Platy!

Re-radiusing the wavy fender to fit 700c is very easy.  Velo Orange even has a blog on how to do it: https://velo-orange.com/pages/re-radiusing-fenders

You'll have to gently squeeze the fender together so it ends up being a bit narrower. The wavy is pretty wide from the start so you'll probably be ok if your tire choice isn't super wide.

I think all of VO's fenders are the same length. If anything, the fender may grow slightly in overall length.  The squeezing of the sides is going to cause the fenders to slightly stretch.  Think about squeezing a piece of playdough (or real dough!?).  If you smash a round ball, you get a much bigger (but thinner) pancake.  Same idea.

I'll be getting a pair of these also; at least they are pretty Ergons!  Thanks for the tip!

Prior to Riv, I had a 1990 hybrid bike and my purchase of Ergon grips  was the best investment in comfort I made for that bike.  I still have the grips, but they are too short for this application.

I hope to be back in Las Vegas visiting my sister again this coming spring, and we can get together and I can admire your bike.  ANN, are you still planning on coming down?

I had the opposite problem when building my Clem L earlier this year--I did not want the wavy style, and none of the other 650B offerings were wide enough for the tires I was planning to use, so I bought the 700c 63mm fluted style and reradiused down to fit the Schwalbe 650B tires. I was familiar with the concept, but I can get dyslexic when trying to remember instructions like this, so I followed the method in Anton's blog (it's down a bit):

I suppose I don’t understand how 650b fenders can work on 700 and vice versa, but it’s encouraging to think that they CAN. If Analog can somehow mock up the wavy VO fenders for my raspberry Platypus, I’ll be delighted. If not, I probably will go with SKS and call it good.

Nothing stresses me out like asking people to do fenders for me. And worse, asking Vegas bike shops, who would not have the skill and not see the need. Ugh, I’m tempted to go in disguise! It isn't too hard to re-radius fenders; I've done it in a small way to reduce the 650B arch to 26"/559 bsd size. I know there are instructions on the web. Basically the principle is that you can widen or flare the width to reduce are arc, and compress or narrow the width to increase the arc. Perhaps someone knows a link to good instructions. I know that Jan Heine devoted a feature in a past Bicycle Quarterly to fenders, and the instructions included re-radiusing.

Once you learn the general principles, the activity is pretty straightforward; but of course, it's learning the method that is the hard part. I learned it the hard way by, basically, ruining at least a couple of nice, expensive pairs of metal fenders.

If you can get Analog to do it, go for it.

The raspberry color is very nice. Me, I dislike white accessories, but IMO the raspberry paint will quite overshadow any white detractions.

How about these: (I was never a big fan of wood fenders because of the flat profile, but now that he makes them with a compound curve, I am seriously pondering them for my Hubbuhubbuh--almost exclusively for style points, since it will rarely be ridden in the rain.

I am generally not a fan of wood fenders either but I can't argue that those would look good on the Ras-Platypus.  I'm trying to figure out what fork crown that is on the Platypus, it's very similar looking to the Clem / Hunq one but not the same (my Clem's got a half moon shape where that has three dots).  Knowing that inside dimension would be helpful before suggesting over-60mm fenders, but VO makes a 63mm fluted model for 700c that would look good imo.

Re-radiusing is quite doable but also nice to avoid if possible, since it's really not that hard to mess it up and end up with the wrong kind of wavy fender.

Jason, I think the Platypus is supposed to be able to take 50 mm tires. 48 with fenders. Don’t ask me how I know that, I cannot remember, but someone from Riv wrote it SOMEWHERE. Lol on the “wavy” fender. Too true, too true.

This bike is getting pretty fancy. I cannot decide if I should just go with it or toss plastic SKS fenders in there so the thing is a bit more humble.

Riv can’t do the fenders without the wheels, and Analog will have the wheels but no frame. Analog is planning for a fender-mount for my tail light, so someone has to do them! It’s a fine kettle of fish, as they say where I’m from...

Roberta and Ann and Joyce - yes, #RivSisters forever. Platypuses on parade. And so on and so forth!

Leah:

Go fancy.  In fact for a frame that pretty, there is no such thing as too fancy.

Also, when I initially had Honjos on my Soma, I had 700c seven though my wheels were 650bs.  The aluminum was pliable enough to bend to fit the wheels and didn't look off.  That may be an option for you to explore.  I will see if I can find some pictures.

And from what little I've learned of aluminum fenders from reading around here, a most important take away is that the fender needs to be "relaxed", meaning it wants to be precisely where it is, holding position, not trying to pull itself elsewhere however slightly. An art? maybe. Certainly a job suited to patient folks.
Looking forward to seeing all these platypi

These are 45MM should work well!

I too have some wood fenders I am planning on using. I was just up in the general direction of HQ and called to see if maybe I could stop by and see a prototype, but they shot me down. :-(
Would have been nice to help me make my mind up and visualize the whole thing.

Leah, I don't think I'd worry about getting the fenders MM perfect; as long as the fender covers the majority of the tire it should be fine; 90% of the spray comes off the center of the tire anywayz.
On top of that how many 700 X 50mm tires are there at this point?
Some 43MM Gravel King slicks would probably be Ideal for a build like this!

Well, all my bikes have fenders and I've found there is nothing more annoying than a fender that rubs the tire when you go over bumps, etc.  I always size them 10mm wider than the tire.  So a 43mm tire isn't going to work very well with 45mm fenders unless the tires inflate to much smaller than the stated width.

I'm having similar mental gymnastics, but not around fenders.  I'm thinking about a crankset for my Platypus.  I guess you can't go wrong with the Rivendell Silver, but I'm looking for a vintage triple I can put a bash guard onto, maybe?

I’m glad you guys are resurrecting this thread. I am bored to tears over here and talking bikes is good for morale. I got the fenders squared away. Analog ordered the VO fluted fenders in 63 mm for my 43 or 44 (I forget) mm tires. I also ordered the PDW breakaway tabs, which, incidentally was new to Analog. I think with the trail riding they like to do those tabs are a good thing for them to know about.

As far as cranksets, I just went with Silver from Rivendell. I nearly went 1x, but honestly, I love the trouser guard (looks so clean) and I really do use both cogs in front on the daily for Killer Hill. We won’t live here forever, so if I do end up in flatter terrain someday, maybe I’ll try 1x then. Why do you want a triple, Tom?

I’m still waiting for...everything. I have a pair of pretty, white Ergons and THAT’S IT. The wheels aren’t scheduled to arrive at Analog until 11/6 (Velocity is low on stock and these are being anodized), and the Platypus and its parts are still at Rivendell. Hurry up and wait.

And because of the parts shortage, I would highly recommend to everyone that if you are planning on ordering a Platypus, best get your parts ordered now. I thought I was ahead of the game when I ordered my wheelset and dyno on 9.25, since the Platypus wasn’t supposed to arrive until late November. But, the way it looks, it will be Thanksgiving before I will be able to ride this bike. 2020, people. Ugh...

But, I do have those old 650b Clem wheels just sitting in my garage...what’s the worst thing that could happen if I put those on my 700c bike? 🙃

I’d you put the 650b wheels on your 700c frame, you won’t have brakes. Not the best thing for your big hill!

It'll certainly be lighter going up Killer Hill! It’s the going down first that could be interesting...

I like the look of a trouser guard.  I guess that is similar to a bash guard.  Very practical and can be very pretty.

I'm probably going with a 1x11, perhaps a 1x12, but I haven't spoken with James at Analog about differences yet, except for the price.  I live in a fairly flat place and even if I got a triple, I don't think I'm strong enough to use even the easiest of the easy gears.   Is it possible to put a trouser guard on a 1x?  I guess my front ring would be a "double?"

I love the look of fenders, but will probably wait on them, since for multimodal transport, they create complications.

Totally doable, and I am a big fan of the look with the riv bash/chain guard (in this case its a black narrow-wide ring).
