This is a really dumb question but I don't know the answer. I need to mount some fenders on my Frank Jones and y'all seem to use a big cutting tool for trimming the stays..which one do I buy? I have a Dremel and tried that once, but it was an ear-splitting hot mess. I just want to lop off the ends.

You need a small bolt cutter. Goes through alloy stays like butter.

Joe, I use a hacksaw. And a file to smooth off the ends. Steve

I use a hacksaw to cut and a bench grinder to smooth.

Eric, what do I call a small bolt cutter in the search thingy? Is there a specific one you like?

Perfect! Thanks, Eric. I apologize to the list for what may seem obvious to you, I have certain (and entirely unpredictable) neuro-atypical blocks in the old brain that make the obvious way not obvious to me. It's always an adventure! 😋

No worries. I appreciate clarity myself, and I know that finding stuff on Amazon can be a challenge—too many choices!

But you'll need to clean it up with a file afterwards.

I do have a file so I'm halfway there.

I would recommend a Felco C7 cutter. Expensive, yes. Lifetime purchase: great for cutting brake and derailleur cables, housing, spokes

Thanks, just what I need and the same brand as my wife's favourite secateurs!

I use different tools for different kinds of stays:
  • For the Honjo/Berthoud "wraparound" kind, I use a small pipe cutter. Pipe cutters slice through the aluminum stays easily and leave nice ends that seldom require additional finishing.
  • For the Planet Bike/SKS "stick up" kind, I break out my angle grinder and eyes & ears, to make quick work of the stainless steel stays. Trim and finish with just one tool.

I've been able to cut them with bolt cutters without having to mark the stays and remove the fenders. For SKS, they get covered with the rubber tips, so I don't file them. But if you use bolt cutters, please wear glasses. I've had the cut ends shoot clear across the room.

Good call! I always have reading glasses on anyway so I'm good there.
