"J's" from Canada lead the way it seems with starting these monthly photo threads!

November is a difficult month to capture for me, where I live, as it can be a variety of things: sunny and mild, snow!, rainy, gloomy, windy, brisk, frost covering everything.

Today was pleasant, about 5C and mild breeze.  Started out really sunny, turned gloomy (exactly what I'm talking about).  I stuck to the road.  My trails must be ridden by memory, as this shot demonstrates.  I  pass this field of cows twice a week.  Sometimes the steam is rising from their bodies when it's brisk, but I don't always have my camera/phone.

We had our November ABQ steel bikes ride yesterday, much of it on dirt roads and paths though the bosque (forest) along the Rio Grande.  The weather was excellent, a bit chilly in the morning, but then warm enough for shorts by mid-day. A lot of the cottonwoods haven't even turned yet, but I got some decent color in this picture. Unfortunately, I didn't do a good job of positioning everyone and Patrick Moore is just barely visible behind one of the other riders (he did not ride his Roadeo, so don't other looking for that). I'll do better next time! We hope to keep these once-a-month rides going through the year.

That's a good lookin' bunch!

I mostly ride north and west, into the farmlands. For 30 years riding south was riding to work. We had a near perfect November morning and I decided to do an easy trip along the Milwaukee lakefront and reminded myself how luck I am to live here.

On the bike path I met a couple of young'uns on name-brand carbon bikes with name-brand kit. They were riding over 20mph and chatting like it was an easy Sunday morning ride. One of them complimented my bike and asked if it was made by Rivendell. I laughed and said I have a lot of Rivendells, but this isn't one of them! They were super nice guys, talked about wanting a Rivendell (Appaloosa is on his list), and appreciated Grant's contributions to the biking world. It was a good reminder to me not to assume anything about anyone on appearances alone!

It's not very pretty here, and I didn't take photos. But on the ride home through St. Louis there was someone on the street with a smoker. (It is STL, after all.) Figured I'd best stop. All in all, a quite nice 30 miles. But pretty much any ride is gonna be good if it has ribs.

Matt, nice looking Homer - I really like that paint job.   Not to dis the the Cervelo, but ... seeing it parked next to your Homer reminds me why Rivendell bikes matter!

Thank you, Steve. The charcoal has a little sparkle, and I like the red contrast paint. That Cervelo has a beautiful sea green/metallic finish. In the sun it just shimmers. I've never ridden a carbon frame, but lifting it onto the rack sure is a different experience than the Riv!

Stunning photos Mr. Marth!

From yesterday's 66 km valley loop. The same location I've shared before, because it's probably my favourite. It was moody but I stayed dry, temp was about 8C. That Sitka spruce is around 500 years old and is one of only two of this age that I've found in the valley. I bet there's others off-trail I haven't found though. Most of these forests were clear-cut 75-90 years ago, but there is the odd patch of old forest intact.

next time for sure Eric! glad your shirts sold big and I'm excited for year 10. at Nutmeg I rode the atlantis on friday and entered it in the fashion show, Saturday I was locked in for the 82 mixed route so I opted to underbike on my road setup.

it's been windy lately so the leaves are dropping quick! the norway maples, problematic though they are, are one of the last to go. little Bleriot grav/roadie sesh before nightfall aka 4:45pm :)

Out for a swan song ride for my 60cm Platypus on the Beltline. Short version is that the bike is amazing and I love it but happened into a bit of a unicorn frame from another member of the list and there's just too much overlap. I'll be posting the bike/frame for sale here sometime next week when I'm back from a short trip.

'm enjoying these pics - seeing how November is looking across the country. Here's a few from Western North Carolina where Autumn is a bit past its color peak but still lookin' good.  I also did something with my Platypus that I thought I would never do - I took the fenders off (I know, it is shocking!). I blame you Armand!  It was the pic you posted awhile back of your Platy navigating a banked trail. I kept thinking, "That looks like fun".

Way the heck out on the west side of ABQ, west of the volcanoes. The cottonwoods are peaking down in the valley, but there are no trees out here so no fall colors. That's a newly paved bike trail, not a road. The Bosque path along the river was crowded, but there was hardly anyone out here, despite the gorgeous weather and endless views in all direction. Looking forward to coming back up here in winter.

It's already the 9th?!  Wow, time flies.  Got out for a decent ride both yesterday and today, with today's being solo so I took more photos. The maples are nearing the end of their abscission, a word I just learned, and I'm noticing the huckleberry bush leaves are starting to go yellow - soon they'll be lighting up the forest floors around here despite being hard to notice most of the year.

I LOVE seeing all the photos - thanks everyone for them.

A couple weeks later, and a couple hundred miles east of Randy, I did my birthday ride today. Chilly and super windy, but a clear blue sky in November is a gift to be honored and cherished. Celebrated with all of my favorite roads, trying to hide from the wind as much as possible on the way out, then with it as much as possible on the way home.

Yesterday I was able to check off a route idea I'd been curious to try for months now - it involved some trails that I noticed on certain maps (and not others) which had little to no heatmap activity to suggest they were worthwhile, but were compelling in how they connected together. I delayed riding this route until I had my new frame purchase put together - a Crust Evasion - because it felt like a perfect test of this bike.

I am happy to say the route was successful and beautiful, and as much as I adhere to the Rivendell thought process for what features a bike should have most of the time, I also really appreciate disc brakes and dropper posts for our steep and wet PNW riding sometimes. The bike is set up with 26x2.8" WTB Ranger tires and I am smitten with them - they got me down some blue-rated MTB trails and didn't feel sluggish on the mostly paved 55 km route.

Fear not, I'll still get out in the woods on my Hillborne and Bombadil, but enjoying this option.

IMG_3382.jpegGetting things sorted out on another shake down ride on the new Charlie. This is the 61cm frame size. I fall in the middle of the 57 size range and at the lower end of the 61 size. As you can see, I’ve got tons of stack height with that tall head tube. So the stem is pretty slammed and my bars (Choco) are flipped. I’ve ruled out all other bars that aren’t swept back with this reach. I plan to try Billie bars next as I explore the more swept back bar options. Overall, I’m very happy with the ride. It’s incredibly smooth while not being too doggy. Setup is very comfortable. Oh, this was taken on a rare dry, yet foggy, November day here on the Olympic Peninsula. We’re past peak colors and now into soggy leaf season.

Mike, what a lovely photo of your Charlie on the trail!  Is that a portion of the Olympic Discovery Trail (ODT)? It’s nice to know there’s another Charlie in the area.  I’m on Whidbey and love getting out on that bike. However, I have yet to install fenders so the rains have kept it garaged.

What tires and fenders are you running?  (Brand and size).

Good luck with your handlebar search..

Hi Joyce,
These tires are the 42mm Soma Supple Vitesse SL, which unfortunately are discontinued.  It figures, since they’re my favorite tire of all time.  They fit nicely under these SKS Bluemels fenders (the B55 size), purchased from Rivendell. Looks like a 42mm tire is about the max width to fit within these Tektro R599 brakes, without resorting to deflating the tires or de clamping the cable.

Yes, this was along the ODT. It’s not the only route to ride around here, but I tend to gravitate towards it most often. Hard to  dislike the low-stess, car-free route.

Mike, thanks for the info on hte tires and fenders.  I love riding the ODT and get over your way at least once a year for a ride.  Last spring I rode the Spruce RR trail starting from the campground and realized it's best to avoid the north end due to all the tourists who aren't watching for a bike!  Next time I'll turn around at the top of the hill and avoid the madness down at the parking lot.

New wheels and tires, with TPU tubes.  The 42mm Hurricane Ridge measured 40mm on the Quill rims.  Had PSI in the high 20's, made for a comfy ride.

This is the calm before the storm, as starting Tuesday looks like we're going to get a lot of rain/snow for a week or longer.

Photo lacking a bicycle, but I rode my Crust instead of a Riv anyway (honestly, it's nice having disc brakes when riding in the wet, especially off-road ..).  Photo is from Saturday, quite miserable weather but I knew it would be perfect weather at this lake a few miles outside town.. sure was!  I enjoyed a coffee there under an umbrella. Getting good use out of my Blue Lug sit pad as well. Unsurprisingly, I did not see another human in the area.

Lovely photo! Certainly a 2025 top 10.

Had a window of time and weather Monday and Tuesday to take a last long ride down and back on the GAP for the year, overnighting in Ohiopyle. It was stark and empty, not a cyclist seen over the two days. Residents were not out doing their usual things in the distance either, no tractors, mowers. No sounds of people going about living where they do.

Foliage really buffers sound, and with all of them gone, I could hear and directionally locate animals by their steps in the crunch fallen leaves from great distances. Probably why I saw so few animals besides ground squirrels and a few deer; they seem to know they are easier to hear and see now, doing their risky foraging at dusk or dawn.

Riding along the Youghiogheny River as it varies in steepness and width with the leaves gone let me hear sounds of the water more crisply and loudly than any time I've been down this way. Rapids and riffles announced themselves from much farther than usual, begging for a look. The trickles down small tributaries and rills toward the river were noticeable as well. All things that you overlook in peak season.
25 Nov 25 SunDog Adelaide.jpeg
A closed RV campsite's table provided a break before the last stretch of wilderness. A bad picture overall, but the sun dog, the glint left of the diffused sun, is the subject. This warned me that the weather was changing from what had been forecast. After a nice dinner and sleep, a showering rain began before sunrise. Not a downpour, it didn't even look like much precipitation until riding through it after breakfast.

80 miles home in steady rain. The water saturated the otherwise well-draining path after a few hours, making it definitely slower. The leafless trees took on a darker look as their bark became wet. Time seemed to stop without the angle of shadows giving their sundial-like guide; it only got darker. I got home hours after dark. Sadly, no pictures of that part of the ride, as my efforts were focused on keeping energy up and hypothermia down. Despite the dour end, this was a very enjoyable reminder that a familiar ride or place changes greatly in season and time of day, if you notice.

Nothing like Andy's epic couple of days, but I spent an hour in the snow this morning. It will probably be too much to ride in by nightfall. As planned, I put the fenders and lights on the Breadwinner last night, just in time. Might have to put the studded snow tires on there soon.

Here’s a misty winter’s afternoon by the bay.

I’ve gone soft lately, remembering my Wisconsin Novembers when 40 degrees was warm and delightful. Now it feels, well, just plain cold.

We ride anyway, of course, just a little faster in the effort to generate heat.

Here, here, to extra effort for the purpose of building up some heat!

I love the off-season stories and rides. It's the time of year in which we face more concerning environmental factors, reconnecting us with self-preservation instincts (not the "stay on the couch" ones) and the opportunity to shake the dust off some useful skills.

Feeling pretty lucky that we're still in the above-freezing range and this weekend is dry. I know this photo will look like a lot of the photos I post, but I had never been on this trail until today and was very pleasantly surprised by it. Again I'm on the Crust Evasion, now 2.5 weeks in and 212km on the odometer.

Boy I wish I was there with you Jason on that trail.  We have officially entered winter (hour outside Toronto; if I was closer to 1.5-2 hrs north of Toronto, we would have over 1 foot of snow).

It was a good wildlife weekend; yesterday I had a couple of distant interactions with a coyote, who seemed to be limping (confirmed by someone I bumped into afterwards).  The coyote was gorgeous to look at.  This morning I rescued a bird from some bramble.  I held him carefully with one hand, pulled the bramble off carefully until he/she can fly away.

Jock, your Ebisu generates heat all by itself. The orange glow against the misty background is heart warming:-)))

Thanks, Rich!

Still missing your GA, as now I suspect I always will.

So many beautiful lonely backroads. Nothing like that anywhere close to CA. But, of course, we always ride—one way or the other 🤪🚴‍♀️🙏

I did not see that until you mentioned it. Happy accidents, I guess. :)
