Mt Diablo as it appeared on Monday. Shot this on a whirlwind ride from Davis to Martinez.

From the upcoming (who knows when) “36 Views of Mt Diablo."

Davis to Martinez? How did you navigate the Lopes RD area along 680?

Getting there involves riding on the freeway shoulder for about two miles. It’s legal in CA when there is no alternative to the freeway, which is the case with the closure of Lopes Road. I’ve done this several times, and it’s quite safe.

I figured that was the case. I'm not sure how much trust I would put in riding on the shoulder there, having seen many shenanigans by drivers along 680. However you are a testament to the fact that it's possible.  My hope is that there is a "deer path" worn by people bypassing the construction in the fields to the west of the road, but even that seems risky because security seems to be tight in the construction zone.

It is a huge shame that they don't have an area at least open for pedestrians and cyclists through that area. It effectively cuts off that segment of people from getting between Cordelia and Benicia without taking a detour through north Vallejo (12 vs 18 miles). News reports even say construction might not start for a few months into 2025.

Thanks for the info,
Jeff B

I did a bike-and hike across the slide not long after it first occurred, but the barriers they’ve installed now are pretty serious and it’s clear they don’t want people out there.

Here’s a video I took on the freeway (both hands firmly on the handlebars):
