I did pretty well on the 2024 goals I posted to this group.  I did not get 100% of them but I had a pretty good year.

For 2025, my goals include:

Another try at 10,000km
25% of each town/park in Marin County on Wandrer.earth
25% of each town/park in Alameda County on Wandrer.earth
Do at least one belt-drive brevet
Take a run at an R12
56 miles on my 56th birthday
5 more summits of Mount Diablo on 5 different bikes

What is a belt-drive brevet exactly? A brevet on a Rohloff-equipped bike or something?

And how's that new CHG working out for you?

Happy new year!

by a belt-drive brevet, I mean complete a brevet on a bike with a belt drive.  I've done a derailleur-less brevet on a bike that had no derailleurs, and did a fixed gear brevet on a bike with a fixed drivetrain.

My new Charlie H Gallop is in the queue for use in a month or two.

"complete a brevet on a bike with a belt drive"

...and my current bike with a belt-drive is a Crust Single Speed Lightning Bolt, with a Sturmey-Archer 3-speed hub.  I'd love to acquire one of the White Industries Gates-belt freewheels but with their rarity, I expect I'll need to pay something like $300 - $400 to get one.

I'm several weeks late to the thread, but this year, as part of my three bike season goal to ride PBP in 2027, I'm hoping to do the San Francisco Randonneurs (SFR) ride series, which is the 200k, 300k, 400k, and 600k.  Each of them separated by about a month starting in February.  I've never done the SFR 600k, so we'll see how it goes. Next year adds a Santa Cruz 1000k, followed by PBP 1200k in France in 2027 if things go well.

In a separate note, I'll describe some changes to my Riv custom randonneur bike as I strike a balance to minimize bike weight, while maintaining my personal list of essentials.

That lovely green custom? I'm eager to see how you'll change it up and good luck with your 2027 PBP!

Good luck with your 2025 Series, Toshi.  I'm loading up for the first 200 of 2025 right now.  As always, I think the R12 is going to be my ceiling.  The Feb 8 200 is on my birthday, so I'm signed up for that to tick off my >56 miles on my 56th birthday.  I'm constantly aware of PBP2027 hanging out there, and I've actually already tentatively committed to being in France for most of my 6-week sabbatical that summer, so all the logistics are falling into place.  Let's try to ride together for at least a few hours during the Coleman Valley 200 and we'll see if you can Inception the goal into my brain...

I don't think I have a long ride report in me, except to report that the first leg of a potential R12 is complete.  Yesterday I did the SFR Dillon Beach 200k.  By SFR standards it was flat as a pancake with "only" 7100 feet of climbing.  The field was ~80 riders.  It was cool but not cold, bottoming out in the low 40s and topping out in the low 50s, and there was unusually little wind along Tomales Bay.  It's possible that riders finishing close to the time limit may have gotten a little rain but I was spared in my 10:24 time.  Given my fitness level and weight, I think it went about as well as I could have hoped for.  I got a lot of good handlebar meditation in.  I actually rode my rando-bike for a change and it did very well.  All my contact points were good, but I definitely feel the 128 miles in my body today.  I'm going to try to get out on a short flat wandrer ride this morning, before watching football on the couch.

I saw several Rivendells on the ride, and an unusually high percentage of the field sported traditional frenchie handlebar bags and fenders.

...and I forgot the highlight:  On Sir Francis Drake exiting Samuel P Taylor Park, Will Keating and a similar band of hooligans rode past me, and we shared a short greeting. Sneakers and helmet-less as one would expect.

goals getting more realistic. this spring I'll ride 80 to celebrate my 80th; but at some point soon that's likely to be a losing game; so  after this, around my birthday I'll just take a ride..;..20, 81, who knows...invite friends.....come spring, if I'm feeling sporty, I might do birthday ride on the quickbeam...flat where I live.  we'll see.

Guaranteed eternal life: ride your age every single birthday.  It's the cheat code, Tom.  I believe in you.  In 24 years, I'll try it out too

Well, Tom, truth is—as you’ve you realized, the numbers surly work against you.

I’ve been following the Ride Your Age program for quite a while now and I’ve always been able to put some ‘in the bank’ so to say. I’m bouncing around in the mid-70s and still laying down 80-milers…but as year by year flys by—the writing is on the wall. Just ticked off 83 for the 2025 edition, feeling quite fit, yet  lingering within the euphoria of accomplishment is the stark reality.

What I’m trying to say is I’m still ready to ride, but not nowhere ready to not ride.

I’m stubborn but that that alone ain’t eventually enough to tick off the miles is it.

Thanks all for the encouragement!

--Bill, congrats on your 200k!  I will look for you at the start.  I'll be on my green custom.

I think I have/will drop around 3-4 lbs.  My philosophy: others are riding pure racing bikes, I can make compromises (for example, -0.5 lbs on saddle) if my body tolerates it.

No kickstand
Aluminum fenders
Front bag with decaleur (no stifferners--big lightener)
Plastic saddle
--Event tires (will try for 400k+ events) Hetre EL--> Ecureuil EL (-0.5 lbs!) (will ride 38 mm vs my preferred 42 mm)

I will send pics and updates as it goes.

Toshi

I knocked out my "ride my age on my birthday" goal.  Today I turned 56, and I rode more than double my age on the SFRandonneurs Coleman Valley 200k.  My Wahoo told me I did 8740 feet of climbing and my legs agree.  I was on my Pink RoadeoRosa, and Toshi was there as well on his green custom.  I just missed my normal "par" goal of 10 hours.  I did 10:01 clock running, 9:22 in motion.

Nice one, Bill. The Pt Reyes ride came a week before my birthday, but I counted it anyway. But double your age is pretty darn good!  sd

I was lucky that there was a 200k on my birthday.  I was double lucky that the heavy rains stopped the day before the ride.  No chance would I have done this ride in the heavy rain.  Even though it was clear, it was plenty cold for Northern California.  My cutoff for full-finger gloves, long sleeve jersey and tights  is 10C (50F).  The forecast had the day time highs in the low 50s, and that turned out to be accurate.  I think the biggest number I saw on my Garmin was 12C.  At the beginning of the ride and through the valleys it was a lot colder.  I was chatting with Toshi heading up Lucas Valley and I saw it drop to 3C then 2C then 1C...  It got all the way down to -3C (roughly 27F) and stayed there for a good couple hours.  I wore everything I carried and needed to keep moving!  By Bay Area standards, that's legit cold!

Happy birthday!  Congratulations :-)

That is cold; I rode yesterday an hour outside Toronto and our high was -2C (balmy).

I'm 50, I don't think I could bang out 200k this year, but I haven't ridden that distance since my late 20's/early 30's.  I want to build up my distance riding this year (pretty much my only goal).

Yes, happy birthday Bill ...and well done...there may well have been some luck involved, but sounds more like thoughtful prep and fitness; I know you leave as little to chance as you can. No doubt that lovely pink Roadeo Rosa didn't hurt either.

As for the temps...we like to say in Winnipeg..."but it's a dry cold and we get lots of sunshine". Right now, as I take a break from writing my senior thesis , it's -14 C , sunny, with no wind. A perfect winter day

It was also a birthday ride for me--not the day, but the week (and same # of years as Bill). It was cold in the morning. I should have had full booties instead of just the toe covers as I couldn't feel my feet very well for the first half of the ride. I'm not sure how it happened, but something slashed my tire on the edge of the tread and sidewall and my tube popped and fizzed out air.  I booted the tire with a sticky park tape/boot that I cut to size and rode on.

The tire is fairly new with tons of tread left.  I'm inclined to continue riding on the tire, but do you think the tube will slide around and abrade on the boot and flat?

Toshi

Thanks Bill,

I'm going to chicken out on my commute tomorrow with the forecast of 2.5 inches of rain, but I should get some additional riding in the next few days.

Toshi, who hopes to beat the rain home on my bike commute tonight and stay dry tomorrow in Oakland

" with the forecast of 2.5 inches of rain"

A 56 mile ride in 2.5 inches of rain would definitely cancel my birthday.  I'd never see 57!
