I thought, "Typo!" but the copy gives an even lower price: $6 and talks of inferior substitutes 4 and 12 times more.

I don't need one since I have all sorts of cup 'n' cone tools including the very nice VAR lockring pliers, but I'm tempted to buy one just because it costs $7. Or $6.

But I'm afraid if I order I'll find that they missed a decimal point.

Can anyone confirm or correct?

Man! $7, from Rivendell! I don't mind paying Rivendell prices for top quality merchandise, but Rivendell is not a discount store and $7 is a price I'd find low at Target. Must put together a shopping list for Rivendell.

These quick link pliers are a good deal too.

This reminds of Shawshank Redemption movie where Andy asks Red to get him a rock hammer that sells for (at the time) ..... $7.

When Red inquires as to how Andy is going to use it, he replies "you'll understand when you see the rock hammer".

With the HZ lockring tool, you'll understand why it's $7 when you see it ;-) .

Agree with Garth. I bought one, and I'd say $7 is about the right price.

I have gone back and forth with the notion of trying an adjustable bottom bracket but haven't quite convinced myself to go there. I don't need one since my Shimano and IRD models have always worked fine. BUT the temptation is there and I'm a sucker for the classic look. Besides riding aren't bikes to be tinkered with (for some of us)?

Who out there has been "groovy enough to take on a cup-and-cone bottom bracket" (Grant's/Riv's words)?

I've installed and adjusted many, many cup and cone bbs, from horribly cheap ones that were very hard to adjust for proper tension to top of the line like Suntour GG and Dura Ace that were easily installed with perfect adjustment. It does help to have good tools -- and I've still got an array of pin wrenches and lockring wrenches and pliers and fixed cup wrenches. But I recall removing, installing, and adjusting the bbs on my Raleigh Sports and Raleigh Sprite, and on Indian roadsters, using a pipe wrench for the fixed cup, a Vise Grip for the lockring, and a nail and hammer for the adjustable cup. Got 'em pretty close, anyway.

But good quality cup 'n' cones aren't hard to work with if you have decent tools.

Really though? The easiest and IMO most efficiently designed (performance, longevity, cost -- so I imagine -- and ease of maintenance) off bbs is the Ashtabula; always a doddle to install and adjust, even on cheap bikes. The cheap cottered bbs and cranks were a horribly less efficient design, IMO.

Patrick, if I decide to take the leap you'll be one of the first to know:-)

I disagree with Garth,

I also bought one (to use as a S&S coupler wrench as well as a BB lockring wrench) -- like the entire H-Z tool line it is not fancy  (you'll not mistake it for something from https://www.abbeybiketools.com/ ), but it is decently made, and works well. I's say to me is is worth at least $15 if not a couple of dollars more. If you're running a professional vintage bike repair shop and use it several times a day you might want something more robust, but for the other 99.999997657% of us, this will do the trick, and I'm very glad Rivendell has made it available.

My Hobson Zingo headset press is an inch too short for my Rivendell bicycle frames! And is no longer available from Riv, maybe for this reason?
Certainly an outlier’s problem, but one Julian might share. Still worth it even having to swap the threaded rod for a 14”er, as the press plates are pretty cool…

Kai,

Yep, those of us drinking in the rarified high-altitude air on 68 cm frames do have that issue with headset presses -- I bought the lovely Stein for Riv press that they offered a few years back (a different part of the tool pool from H-Z!)  knowing i had to but a new piece of e threaded rod to fit my multiple taaallll  head tubes. I think that Riv actually offered a long threaded rod optio for those at some point before they disappeared.

While on the subject of headset presses, I'm in the market for one myself. I came across these guys - really affordable tools, on par with the no-name brands from Amazon and eBay but it seems like they make their own tools and will do custom jobs for little or no money. Shipping was only $15 to my house in east coast USA too. Anyone got any reviews of these tools? https://www.bearingprotools.com/products/headset-cup-press

Smitty,

I have ordered and used several of BearingProTools' bearing pullers.  I found them to be very well made and reasonably priced. Although I do not have their headset press, I would not hesitate to order it if I needed one.

Julian great to know thanks. I've got a broken bearing outer stuck in a pedal and deciding if the cost of the puller is worth it to get the pedal up and running again. If I order the headset press I suppose I may as well!
