Wanted post worries

Greetings all,

I posted a want ad yesterday for an Albastache bar and got a couple responses from people I’ve never seen here before. I do know there are lurkers on the list so if Denise and Eduardo Garcia are members here please follow up with more info.
It’s a shame we have to worry about scammers all the time now and my apologies if I am wrong.

Always check the members list at https://groups.google.come before replying to wanted post DMs. I was recently scammed out of a *whopping* $17 by not following my own advice. Watch for Anita as well.

I got caught up in a spider web with Anita Batya most recently for those *REW10 WORKS* hex brass valve caps . I was taken for a real agitating tail spin with her. Still waiting for an answer from Paypal for a refund to finalize my interests with her.

Can you even tell if someone posts often, other than just being familiar with their name? I've been on here for a couple of years but also don't really post much. I find that most questions I might have are often answered by a quick search and review of old threads. There is a wealth of knowledge on this group. It's hard to know if someone is trying to scam you. I guess using PayPal or some form of protected payment is the way to go.

I'm confused. When I check your link (after correcting it to eliminate the final "e" you accidentally included in the link text), it just presents the list of the groups to which I'm already subscribed; it doesn't give me any option to view the members of any of the groups. If I launch the home page of an individual group, it gives me a list of the total number of members in tat group - but it still doesn't give me a list of their names/handles/email addresses.

How is it that you're getting to a list of members? What does it look like?

Peter, on the desktop version on the left there is a "members" option, click on that and there's everybody. I included a screenshot of what mine looks like at least.

I should add the member list alone doesn't tell the whole story. I checked my own which said 2020 but I've been posting here since 2008. 2020 was that wonky year where I seem to recall getting inadvertently excommunicato from the group for which upon speaking to Jim it was worked out.  The point being for me at least, check not only their join date but also their posting history, and don't be afraid to be choosy who you sell to. We're under no obligation to sell to anyone but those we choose to and on agreeable terms for both parties. If you're desperate to sell something fast that's when you can get snookered. Unless you're okay with giving something away freely without any expectations in return(and there's nothing wrong, or noble with that), do your due diligence and take your time, sell it elsewhere or some other time.

Okay, that appears to be a feature that goes group by group. Of the groups that got migrated over from the Bikelist server a-many years ago, 650B and RBWOB have members-viewable, but Classic Rendezvous and iBOB don't. There are other features like "Labels" available here and in iBOB, but not in others; the RBW Labels are RBW-Ephemera, RBW-History, and transactions-sell-buy-trade. I suppose all the features in that group-specific bloc are setting options determined by list administrators.

Just as a reminder, this is a publicly viewable list. 

The contact settings allow members of the group to contact another member. Potentially, someone could join just to do so. That would mean that they likely have not ever posted to the group, as their postings would be moderated until they reach out to me directly. 

If the person shows no history of activity in the group, I'd strongly encourage you to confirm they are legitimate. You can easily search by member name or email.

Yes anita reached out to me after i posted a WTB in the 650B list. Called them a scammer and was then responded with this

WOW ! ....Issac I am very glad to hear that you called Anita M. Batya out after you identified her as a scammer. She truly is. She doesn't live in Seattle as she told me. She questioned me over my doubting her. No record of it. I found her in Uniontown, PA.
