The 2025 Philadelphia Bike Expo is on March 8 and 9, and Rivendell is going to be there.  I went last year for a few hours (on my way back home from a family visit in MD) and enjoyed it a lot. Fun to meet some of the Rivendell staff in person, and lots of other interesting things to look at and enjoy.

I'm thinking about going again this year - -but for a bit longer in order to be able to really enjoy it.

Anyone else considering going?

Last year was my first time going, and I really enjoyed it. The Rivenfolk are great, of course, and I got to meet Leah and Pam, as well as builders such as Jeffrey Bock and Brian Chapman. The morning and evening rides are an added bonus; I also volunteered, which I will happily do again. That said, I'm not so sure I can get there this year, given a tight schedule in March, but I highly recommend PBE and taking part in every element of it.  The vibe at PBE is excellent. Be sure to bring a bike!  Good time to buy a show bike from Rivendell, too.

The Good Tom! I sure hope we can meet again!

River - there will be rides posted on the event website. Pam often leads a ride to the Keystone After Party and sometimes one on Sunday. There was a coffee ride last year I really enjoyed.

Hey all,

Welcome to town all be it a bit early. I’ll be doing unofficial rides Friday night, Saturday afternoon, and for Sunday morning I am one of the organizers of Coffee Outside Philly and that’s our weekly which tends to turn into a bit of thing during expo.

Last year I lead a pretty fun ride for a few folks from the group and others that left the expo, made it’s way to some of our single track, and gravel loops, hit a nice historic bridge or 2 and then cut back across town to keystone. I’ll put in a bit more planning this year and try to share some routes.

Anyway,

Tim in Philly

I wanted to make this year happen but my father has health issues that won't allow it to happen. Next year will be certain for me if Rivendell is there again. Especially since I found out that the flower show that my wife wants to go to is in the same building at the same time

Amtrak is having a sale on some of the routes.  I think NYC-PHL was on the list.  You can take a bike but need a reservation.  Ck details.  Look for the bike sticker on the train to tell you which ones have the racks.  The bike reservation is an extra cost.

Thinking about taking Amtrak up from Atlanta so I can bring my Appa, but worst case I'll fly up and use an Indego bike. Unless another list member has a loaner I can borrow for the weekend.

Looking forward to meeting any/all of you going though!

Hi Drew,

I'm also in Atlanta; I just priced Amtrak and see that a seat in coach isn't too expensive--I didn't include a bike--but the cost of small cabin is high; nearly $500 each way. I really enjoyed going to PBE last year but would want my own bike this time instead of an Indego.  The Rivendell guys are bringing their own, I believe, rather than display bikes to sell (too bad!)

Around here, being recently arrived and living near Grant Park, I usually ride part of the Silver Comet, and also out by the monastery and around Stone Mountain. A couple of days ago I rode Dirty Sheets with a friend; still muddy after last week's snow and all.

I wound up signing up for the PA Randonneurs International Women's Day 107K Populaire that is also on Saturday March 8th (Which is being organized by notable Philadelphian and Hunqapillar owner, Ello) so I promise that no one will get dropped on the night ride this time around other than me.

The populaire is open to all RUSA members and it starts near and ends at Bike Expo for anyone interested in joining from out of town.

Another Atlantan (at mile 10.5 on the Comet).

I’m not going to make it, but info for Tom and Drew — The AMTRAK Crescent is the train.
It is usually an hour or two late, and takes roll-on roll-off bikes between specific stations with facilities (ATL but not Anniston Al, unfortunately, as that is the terminus of the “Comet”) - check about Philly.
I took it to New Orleans, with my Sam.  Schedule says it leaves ATL at 8:43, ours left at 9:30. Schedule says it arrives NOLA at 9:02, ours arrived at 10:30.  Be advised.
Going North, schedule says it leaves ATL at 11:29 PM.  Ours arrived back from NOLA to ATL at 12:30 AM.
Going North it is a red-eye, coming into Philly supposedly at 4:57 PM.  Not too long in a seat…
The sad truth is that the Crescent gets diverted onto sidings whenever a freight train needs to pass.  Hence the tardiness.

Good luck!  Have fun!  Post your experiences!

I am scheduled for work the weekend of the show and cannot attend but I do hope that the Expo folks are taking note of the magnitude of attendance and activities coming from this community of one exhibitor.

I talked with Will on their first visit and said that I felt the Philly Expo was a really good constellation in the biking universe and Rivendell was a great fit. The east coast has an appetite for Riv bikes.

All who are interested and considering the weekend will find many rewards from the experience if they decide to go.

If you fly w/your bike, you can put it in a cardboard box (get one from your local bike shop & measure it to make sure it's within the regulations for your airline).  Most airlines charge a normal bag fee for a bike box.  When I flew, I had a bag and my bike in a box so I paid for 2 bags.  I was offered a first class upgrade which came w/2 free bags and the first class upgrade ended up being less than paying my 2 bag fees.  YMMV.  Check your airline.

I stayed at an AirBNB in the East Falls neighborhood when I went to the expo last year. It was really nice to be so close to Wissahickon Valley Park and the Schuykill River Trail, the latter of which makes it really easy to get from East Falls to the convention center. I took the Amtrak from Cleveland and the river trail also made it easy to get from the train station to East Falls. There’s even some nice hill climbing!

I had so much fun last year, and if anyone is on the fence I highly recommend going. I won’t make it this year, but will definitely be attending in 2026.

I remember meeting Eric M and Tim while I was there. The coffee outside ride that Tim organized was a blast!

I’ll be there too and if anyone needs any local help, I’m happy to assist.

If you’d like to have a 10-20 mile ride to and from the expo, check out hotels and Air B&B  along the Schuylkill River Trail westbound towards Valley Forge. Easy biking into town on the SRT and it’s a great trail. Mfoxbass noted a stay in East Falls neighborhood with an easy 6mile or so ride into town.

If you’d like to come early for a bike ride, I suggest riding out west to Valley Forge and beyond on the SRT. If you have a car and don’t mind another 30 mile drive, go up to Washington‘s Crossing State Park. Ride the top path up on the Pennsylvania side and you’ll have an option of coming down the New Jersey or double back on the Pennsylvania side, which is the prettier of the two sides. I might be available for either ride, but since I ride the SRT all the time and Washington’s Crossing State Park is fabulous are more likely to want to go there.

The largest indoor flower show, The Philadelphia flower show, is also at the Convention Center, March 1- 9th. If you love, flowers and gardening and landscape, you might wanna come a little early. https://phsonline.org/the-flower-show

I am seconding Roberta’s suggestion to ride the tow path along the Delaware about thirty miles west of Philly. I am also sort of local, just over the river in New Jersey and ride the tow path most of the time for my riding. I would be happy to lead a ride on Friday if people are coming early. I usually begin at Washington Crossing State Park on the NJ side where there is good parking, head north about six miles to Lambertville, walk my bike over the bridge to New Hope, ride north through town until I pick up the PA side of the trail which is more scenic, ride up to Lumberville, take a left onto the road at the Black Bass Hotel for two hundred yards, and get breakfast at the Lumberville General Store and then cross over the pedestrian bridge there and head back to Washington Crossing on the NJ side of the Delaware. I think it’s about twenty-four miles altogether. If anyone is interested, let me know.

Hi Leah, where's/what's the party Fri night? I'll be in town.

Cheers!

Robert is running the rides. I’ll let him answer more but basically if it’s after 10 ish o’clock, it’s warm enough to go for a comfortable ride.  for me that translates to 40° or higher.  It’s an absolutely fantastic ride with the towpath on one side and the Delaware River on the other, lots to see in nice places to stop and relax and have lunch

Bob, John and a few others who PMed, I look forward to seeing you again also. I’ll be either on my homer or my platypus, unless it’s raining.

Yes. Weather permitting we can meet at Washington Crossing park in Titusville where there is ample parking and get on the trail heading towards Lambertville on the NJ side. 10ish is what I am thinking but like Roberta, below 40 isn’t ideal for a number of reasons I probably won’t ride. So let’s keep track of th weather report. We can do a few different distances. And I am not in great cycling shape after the winter so I anticipate slow and steady. We can decide how far we want to go but switching over to the PA side in Lambertville by walking bikes across the bridge puts us in New Hope where after a mile ride through town we get on the Pennsylvania side tow path. We can up to the Stockton bridge or if people are feeling good we can go all the way to Lumberville and stop at the general store there for food and coffee.

I believe I need to cancel my reservation and miss out (again).  Meeting, and joining some of you for a ride might have been a bigger draw for me than the Expo itself!

The Friday ride sounds so fun! I'm going to take off work and will plan to join everyone.

So technically, where people should park is called "Washington Crossing Bridge Parking Lot." Search for that on google and you will see the parking lot when you zoom in on google maps how the Delaware and Raritan Canal State Park Trail is next to the parking lot. Friday at 10 weather permitting. If anyone wants my phone number, contact me individually.

I am new to this group (I just recently acquired my dream bike, a Joe Appaloosa) and am going to try to make the Friday ride, too, assuming temps are ok. I ride the towpath regularly and have done a few S240s out that way, looking forward to meeting some of you in person!

March is filled with travels, but I just decided I can't miss PBE due to all the great people I met and bikes I saw last year. Looking forward to seeing Rivfolk, and to Pam's presentation on Sunday morning, and to volunteering at registration.

I won't have a bike with me; if anyone in the area has a size 58/60 to lend for the Saturday ride to Keystone, or a Sunday morning ride, please let me know.  It will be enough just to be there, all the same.

Super jealous of the East Coast community getting together for such a rad event, makes me wish the WC could do an annual Riv gathering.

Maybe if the garage sale is still on for this year we could organize something of the sort?

I’m so excited to see old friends and to meet new ones at the Friday morning ride.  I’m coming with a friend, another Riv rider from New York.

As of Tuesday morning, weather predictions are 40° and sunny at 10 o’clock, going to 51°—great riding weather.  Similar weather predicted for the rest of the bike expo weekend.

I have to monitor events from afar since my work is (and has been) locked in for me this weekend.

I highly recommend seeing Peter Weigle's booth to see his bikes and meet him. He and a number of other builders like Brian Chapman and Johnny Coast have been strong pillars of my kind of cycling, raised on Bridgestones and Rivendell.

Sometimes walking the aisles saturates your eyes and mind so much you lose perspective only to reorganize and realize you just met and had conversation with the person behind something you bought and use on your bike like I did with Paul Price whose Race brakes changed my Rambouillet's breadth of riding by allowing 32mm tires and fenders without interference.

My favorite sneak when time constrained me too much to bring a bike is the Residence Inn in Conshohocken. I can park my car for free and it is just steps away from the SEPTA station to ride into the city center. It's a clean depart point when heading back west after things wind down on Sunday.

The whole Philly Bike Expo is such a strong reinforcement of what you like about cycling. It reminds me of how what corporate hostages we used to feel like at Interbike shows where everything was so commerce driven. Grant and Bridgestone were carefully present but avoidant of that whole "we're farming money from this bike craze" vibe. Too many bad memories of big outfits driving the direction of things and repression of outlier ideas or practices.

Two pictures from the Expos of the past that stick out in my mind were Vietnamese martinis with Wayne Bingham (VAR/MelPinto Imports), Peter Gilbert (Cane Creek) and Deb Banks (Rivet Cycleworks) and one of a a gathering of longtime east coast frame builders in the hotel lobby including Jamie Swan who strongly influenced Brian Chapman.

Please enjoy and absorb all of this weekend's activities, even past your comfort zone. There will be time to sleep and look through the pictures you thought were excessive and the chance meetings you may find yourself cherishing later.

Sorry you won't be there, Andy (and due to werrrrk, of all things).  I''ll be there by noon on Saturday. If anyone would like a pass to the show (good for both days), please PM me, as I have a few.

If there is anyone from or currently in Philadelphia as of Friday morning who would like a lift to this ride I'd be happy to offer. I have room on my car for one more bicycle (no fenders due to the style of roof rack).
Send me a message and will go from there.

I’m new here and am not sure what sort of first impression this makes, but it is way too cold and windy for me (I’d like to say that it’s too windy to safely drive my VW camper out to Washington’s crossing from the Jersey shore, which is sort of true!) but it’s really that I am total wimp when it comes to riding in the cold :-) hope you braver souls have a great ride and maybe I’ll bump into a few of you at the Riv booth this weekend.
PS I work in Princeton a few days a week, if there’s ever any interest in riding the D&R out that way once it warms up, I’m in!

Hi Jim,

Sorry to hear you can't make it. I'm not a fan of extended rides in cold weather either, but I'm hoping it'll warm up enough by the time the ride starts.

Count me in for a D&R ride when it gets warmer.

Jim (and Bob and others)

Count me in also later on the DNR rides as I live in Philadelphia.  And Bob is a great person to ride with.  There are quite a few of us that live within a 40 mile radius.

I don’t mind mild wind so much. I just mind those really bad wind gust which we might get later today. Since it’s on a riding/weather cusp for me, and bike ride rides and socializing are always positive for me I will be there with another RBW board person who doesn’t post that much, even if we have to call the ride short, I’ll be there.  I’ll be on my platypus and the other person has a new Charlie Gallup which I cannot wait to see.

Hello Roberta and other brave souls. I will be there at 10. If the wind is bad, and I suspect it will be, we can a ride up to Lambertville and back. We can grab a coffee in Lambertville to warm up and then head back to WC. If it seems like the wind is not too bad, then we can go further. Will see whoever is there. Looking forward to meeting some of you in person.

Hope you all made it home safe! It was so nice meeting some of you during the Charity Philly ride and throughout the expo on Saturday (I was on the silver Roadini). It was our first time at the Philly Expo and we will DEFINITELY try to make it back next year.

Allen, it was so good to meet you and see your bike at the ride! I was so thrilled to look over and see another Rivendell in attendance. I didn’t catch it at first! I hope you love it and I bet if I see you next year you’ll have a 2nd Rivendell. It happens!
